Scope of Open Data

I have started this page (it is of course our page, not my page) with the idea of collecting current usage of the term "Open Data" and trying to formulate a definition. There are a number of areas which (in my opinion) are distinct from Open Data - they may be supersets or may overlap - and the section "Relation to other Open Activities" was created to allow these to be mentioned briefly and contrasted.

Relation to Open Data

There is a danger that this section becomes (a) larger than the main article and (b) the primary place for describing activities and philosophies which are not mainstream Open Data. There is a particular need to discuss Open Access in relation to OD as it is of great current interest, has a large WP entry and there is great confusion. I suggest that this section is used only to (a) list areas where distinction is necessary and (b) each entry is limited to a sentence of two.

Petermr 23:43, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

I have trimmed all the entries in this section as there are references to the primary definitions elsewhere. Petermr 00:13, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: your undo of Data as singular noun. The "Data" page itself has inconsistant usage, but clearly states that most scientific and technical journals require this noun be used as a plural. As this is a technical artical, I would suggest that plural is appropriate. That said - final say should go to the one who went to the effort to write the page.

Open Notebook Science redirected to Open Data

I was searching for a Wikipedia Entry for Open Notebook Science and see that it was redirected to Open Data. I see Open Data as a subset or an outcome of Open Notebook Science but is not ONS. I discussed my intention to open up an article on ONS with JC Bradley from Drexel who coined the term [1]. He tells me he tried to set up an article previously but had it removed (don't know details but will be meeting with him tonight to discuss). Is there a reason why an article on ONS would not be supported?--ChemSpiderMan (talk) 15:24, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I was interested in learning about this subject, but when I searched for it, PDDL redirected me to a comp-sci stub. I have since changed PDDL to a disambig page to include the ODC PDDL, but I have not yet created a PDDL article since I don't know anything abou it and don't feel like reading the whole license. I thought maybe someone around here might be interested in turning that red link blue? --Shaggorama (talk) 08:17, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Share-alike: Open or closed?

I was surprised to find share-alike mentioned under "closed data". I regard share-alike as Open Data. I have found a reference mentioning share-alike as "controversial" and discussing the cost and benefits [2]. — fnielsen (talk) 13:56, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

government open data

This article is almost entirely about scientific open data - should it be renamed? There is no discussion of the government open data movement and no linkages to gov open data articles (e.g. Data.gov, Data.gov.uk). Rakerman (talk) 12:55, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Open science dataOpen Data — Title does not match topic. -- samj inout 23:03, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

open data encompasses the general concepts of open data as well as specific aspects such as open government data (driven by various transparency and political aspects) and open science data (driven by open access and desire for more productive sharing of science). The material in the article is primarily about scientific data. -- Rakerman (talk) 20:15, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Open science dataOpen data – The majority of this article is now about open data in general, much (most?) of which isn't scientific. It makes no sense to name the whole article after just one type of open data -- it would be like calling the Internet article "Social networking". David (talk) 19:52, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree with David - I have been looking for a WP page to refer to in various places.. including the Open Data for Development Camp website[9], the Kabissa Open Data page about the importance of Open Data for Civil Society Organizations in Africa[10], and the newly created SlashOpen website[11] to encourage more organizations to open up their data and join the "Open Data movement". Open Science Data doesn't quite fit, though the actual contents of the page are fine for explaining what Open Data is all about. I agree Open Science Data is probably part of Open Data and could be explained on this page too. Tobiaseigen (talk) 10:15, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

another in favour (from france)

Hi all, at INRIA we are currently working on the french definition of open data which, surprisingly, was absent in french.

We (me and Emanuela Gambino) also think that this dichotomy between open data and open science data becomes now obsolete. As such, the french open data point now to the english open data one and not anymore to open science data

Open research project on open data

Hi folks, just wanted to make our project known. We're collecting information on open data projects via an open survey (responses always welcome); and we're attempting to offer a clearer definition of open data as a concept, and situate it historically - which we hope to contribute into this Wikipedia article; and we're producing a small Wikibook of case studies on open data projects. This project is being documented on http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Open_Data

I'm moving these out of the article, because while it is a very useful list it is not ideal to have a long list of examples in the middle of an article. Maybe they could be their own page? - Lawsonstu (talk) 09:44, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

origins of the concept of the now widely favoured methods of " OPEN " projects are surely in H G Wells " The Open Conspiracy " c1920s

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Conspiracy

Without saying too much, surely the origins of the concept ' open ' as now favoured are in H G Wells' political programme ' The Open Conspiracy ' which set out exactly this sort of plan of action favoured by various ' open ' movements, notably ' The Open University ' which used television and correspondence as a step towards H G Wells concept of a ' World Brain ' which has by and large now been realised by the internet but which he anticipated as a sort of vast encyclopedic library consulted by telephone.DaiSaw (talk) 23:23, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Add NuCivic to list of organizations promotion open data

I believe that my company, NuCivic, should be included in the article's list of "Organizations promoting open data." We have developed an open source distribution of Drupal called DKAN specifically tailored for building open data websites. DKAN is used to power open websites for government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as documented here and here and here.

Out of respect for Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, I don't intend to edit the open data article directly myself, but if other editors of this article agree that NuCivic should be included, I hope that you will edit the article accordingly. --Sheldon Rampton (talk) 18:15, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Open science data. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Significance of DBpedia for Open Data for industry and science

Hi all, I think DBpedia should be mentioned here. By now it is definitely one of the largest Open Data set available with more than 8.8 billion facts with a plethora of industrial users and also it has a very high impact on research, i.e. around a quarter of ISWC/ESWC are using it. The publications about it reach a high citation counts in the thousands being the foundation for research in the Semantic Web area. Should I just go ahead and edit it? I have a conflict of interest, being part of the DBpedia Association, however, I would try to honor the neutrality of Wikipedia and others can still redact it. I just don't want to be reverted right away, as my work would be lost. SebastianHellmann (talk) 11:56, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Non-governmental open data

This article is almost entirely about open data as provided by governments and doesn't even list organisations such as MetaBrainz Foundation, or, y'know, the Wikimedia Foundation, as open data proponents. Projects such as MusicBrainz or Wikidata or Open Food Facts are not mentioned at all. (Edit: I just noticed Wikidata being listed as an organisation, instead of the foundation. I guess that would be an easy fix at least.)

I'm not sure how to address this at all, esp. since I'm also partial, being employed by MetaBrainz.

(Also, there's barely any discussion about open data licensing either. "License" is mentioned 7 times in the article, 4 of these are in "Relation to other open activities" describing other "open" terms (2), "See also" (1), and "External links" (1). Open source has 28 "license" mentions, 2 of which are not in the main body of the article. And there's also a dedicated open-source license article.)

Community based open data

I talked a bit about this previously (see #Non-governmental open data), but this article is currently only talking about open data from academic and governmental institutions and doesn't mention anything about open data projects coming from "the community" (in lack of a better word for it). A number of projects come to mind: Wikidata, MusicBrainz, ListenBrainz, AcousticBrainz, OpenStreetMap, Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts, Open Pet Food Facts, openBmap/Radiocells.org. Probably more that I'm not thinking of right now or don't even know of. I feel like these projects/this type of project warrant mention on the page as well—maybe as a new sub-section of Major sources? —Freso (talk) 12:25, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

FAIR guiding principles

The FAIR guiding principles for scientific data — findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable — warrant a section in this article.[1] With best wishes. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 07:57, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

@RobbieIanMorrison: I started an article on FAIR data about a year ago. That article is part of the solution. It is still challenging to articulate the overlap and differences between FAIR and open. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:23, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Bluerasberry The article on FAIR data is a good start. From my reading, the main difference between open and FAIR is the question of licensing. The FAIR proponents briefly skirt the issue of legal interoperability but never discuss specific licenses. Otherwise I see considerable overlap between the two strands, although FAIR uses open science as its point of departure. Thanks for the pointer. With best wishes. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 14:39, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
This article definitely needs more mention of FAIR data as one of the major current standards. At time of writing, it's not even in the see also section! Probably makes sense as a start to make a section on principles/formulations/standards/declarations above the mandates section. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 11:34, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Merely "open"

Are there any sources out there that recognise the danger of calling something like this merely "open", as opposed to free (as in freedom), such as with the free software movement? This should be added to the article if possible. Regards, DesertPipeline (talk) 06:02, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Why Open science data talk page is redirected here. I wonder if someone would like to discuss issues with the previous article and did not figure out there is a redirect, it may create chaos. Juandev (talk) 16:58, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

OK, I have removed the redirect, because it does not have a sense, to have it. Juandev (talk) 17:49, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
