Inhibited sexual desire

[edit]

I recently came across your page on ISD. A discussion has engaged with respect to plagiarism of the article from the cited NIH website. I backtracked through the history and found that you initially started the article in 2003 by importing directly from the website, which explains the heavy plagiarization present in the article. I understand that it is posted on a government website so it is in the public domain, but I was wondering how this applied to posting it on a website that operates under the GFDL, particularly without directly citing the article as what it is apart from the history. I understand that this is an unaviodably common practice on wikipedia, but I felt there must be some official policy on copying material like this: "Content must not violate any copyright and must be based on verifiable sources. By editing here, you agree to license your contributions under the GFDL." I admit, this is a topic of which I am fairly unfamiliar. Your contribution to the discussion as the source of the issue as well as an admin would be appreciated. Shaggorama 05:15, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Although I admire the effort you put into this argument, there is no violation of any Wikipedia policy or copyright law. Public domain, by definition, has no recognizable "author" since it equally belongs to everyone. This is also the reason why it cannot be plagiarism. Please refer to Wikipedia:Public domain resources on Wikipedia's policy of pulling in content from public domain sources. Thanks for your care in making Wikipedia a more reliable information resource. Davodd 06:54, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain content porting

[edit]

Easier, yes. Especially when getting an article started. But we need to take care that it is formated to WP style. Most public domain material is written in a way that is neither neutral nor encyclopedic. And none of it is in the correct wiki format. So it will need editing - sometimes much editing - which is a skill unto itself. Have fun! -- Davodd 09:17, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Minus signs

[edit]

Hi. Just a note on minus signs: There's a difference between - (hyphen) and − (minus), also not to be confused with – (N-dash) or — (M-dash). Be careful to replace − with the right one. You can find − on the list of characters below the edit window; it's next to ± and ×. -- Xerxes 17:50, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I often wondered if there were people who couldn't see them. On my computer at work, I can't read greek characters; for some reason they display as ancient Phonician. Maybe there ought to be a Wikipedia font pack to resolve this problem. -- Xerxes 17:20, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration Effort

[edit]

Hey. I am working on a project Wikiversity:School of Fire and Emergency Management. While doing my research I came across a site portal:Fire and it looks like you are one of the larger contributers. I thought I would let you know about the site and see if there are some ways we can collaborate between the two sites and work jointly. Let me know.--Mfinney 17:29, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for leaving a message on my talk page. I will set up a project page on the main one. Most of the folks have been sending me the content to cut and paste in. (Makes for a creative editing process.) As well, some of the training centers have begun requiring their Instructor II students to post their projects onto the site, so that is really helping. There also seems to be a core group of folks who are willing to help maintain and add content. If we list you on the Who's Who page and that way if someone has questions... they can contact someone. If you wouldnt mind adding your info to the Who is Who in the Fire and Emergency Management Department that would help. As far as experience, we both know that no matter what the experience level, we all have something to share. Thanks --Mfinney 16:09, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hypovolemeia

[edit]
Our article on hypovolemia says that blood loss of 10–20% may be tolerated without clinical symptoms. This site roughly agrees, putting the threashold at 15% for Type I hemorraging. Another complication is that the symptoms will depend on the health of the individual: shock will be worse in an individual who has not eaten recently, for example. Physchim62 (talk) 12:36, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I hadn't heard of the specific term 'torrent shocking', and a couple of claims in the article seem a little suspect. However I do recall reading last year about malware spread using P2P software.

See http://software.silicon.com/malware/0,3800003100,39131258,00.htm and http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050617-5007.html for a couple of examples.

Well, I wasn't actually pointing you out for "being bold". I meant the other editor who just keeps complaining about little things. I think I'm going to make a DAB page tomorrow or Monday. Soon. Sometimes it's easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission. I learned that at my first fire department, ha. So I think I'm going to do that, and I'll also remove the "split" template at the top, too. I just want to run this by you before I do it. Again, I'm really busy tomorrow and most of monday, but I'll probably do it then. Thanks though for the work you've done. --MPD01605 02:29, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiprojects

[edit]

I was just discussing with another user starting a Wikiproject: Wildland fire. Looking for a possible parent project or related projects, I noticed there is no Wikiproject: Firefighting but that you are interested in starting one. Goodness knows we need both. (There's a WikiProject on fire alarms though believe it or not...) Still interested? Dragomiloff 01:57, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re the firefighting wikiproject..cool, and yeah I can help...as for names there is the firefighter wikipedians category which could be a good place to start. My experience is entirely wildland and I think wildland is going to be a separate Wikiproject, maybe a sub-project of Firefighting. When I get some more spare time, I'll go ahead and set up the two projects and we can take it from there. Dragomiloff 22:36, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Synesthesia

[edit]

Hi Shaggorama, I just took a look at your profile, and I saw that you were interested in adding something about philosophical implications to the synaesthesia page (like you need more work!). I think it would be great if you were to add that to the page, and most importantly, you'll see with the other clean-up that I've done, it should be much easier. Are you familiar with the work of Jeffrey Gray, and Richard Gray (no relation that I know of) and Adam Wager? They have all published some interesting articles/debate regarding the implications of synesthesia for functionalism, color externalism, and other related topics. Edhubbard 19:59, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I posted this on my talk page, in response to your replies, but I'm not sure if you are checking that, so I wanted to repost here: Thanks. I think that's one of the cool things about wikipedia; that people come here because they care about gaining and sharing knowledge. With the amount of stuff out there, we're all experts on something, and we can share and learn from each other. Edhubbard 20:16, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I was browsing WikiPedia and noticed that you are/were a firefighter. I highly encourage you to stop by and check out our WikiProject relating to the Fire Service around the world. We are in need of many editors and administrators to help the cause. Stay safe, Daysleeper47 18:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A late reply.. There seems to be the potential to create sub-sections for Fire related articles, certainly those relating to the operational fire services. UK/Ireland, Europe, and US all have very different organisations. The Europeans seem to have similar hardware to each other, and aren't generally divided into truck, ladder and engine companies like the US firefighting organisations. Is there an easy way to do this? I find it daunting to look at the fire engine page and even think about the alterations that are needed! User6344 (talk) 18:32, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews

[edit]

Hey, I saw you started an article that seems to be having some difficulties on the Wikinews (I´m an editor there). I just wanted to say that a lot a people have difficulties at first, and of course your still welcomed, by me at the very least :D. I´ve found that its usually a good idea to start with smaller edits on already written articles, like rephrasing for style, cleaning up typos or perhaps adding an extra paragraph of information. Having said that, thats not the way I started, but I did write an article on a topic that was in the news already. I think trying to establish a new topic out of different recources is certainly a worthy objective, but most definitely a very difficult thing to begin with.

Hope this was of some help, and of course feel free to ask me questions on my talk page on wikinews.

Attunement

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Attunement, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Attunement. - Eldereft ~(s)talk~ 06:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Soul

[edit]

Thank you for your kind note, Shaggorama, and you're very welcome! The German noun Seele (and its adjective seelisch) is a tricky one. In psychoanalysis, English often gives mind or psyche (sometimes even self), and it can also means soul. I found translations giving mental structure instead of psychic structure too. The fact that German (e.g. Jung) uses Psyche as well, doesn't make it any simpler. Anyway, good luck with your friend's paper! ---Sluzzelin talk 07:06, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Anti-Procreation Movement

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Anti-Procreation Movement requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guidelines for people and for organizations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. RayAYang (talk) 21:29, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Philosophy in Brazil

[edit]

Hi. I saw your comment about brazilian philosophers and your interest in philosophy of mind. Although I'm not the most indicated person to give you directions on that subject (because I have never studied philosophy and all I do on philosophy articles are some formatting and orthographic corrections), I have made a little research and found some info that I believe that might be useful to you:

  • The brazilian website Filosofia da Mente is all about philosophy of mind and is maintained by philosophy teachers from the Federal University of São Carlos (state of São Paulo - Brazil), which is known to be a good university;
  • There is a brazilian community about this theme, in Orkut. The code of that community is 11417552;
  • There are two short e-books, from the brazilian philosopher João de Fernandes Teixeira, which are available online for free download. Both e-books are in brazilian portuguese. The (translated) title of the first book is What is philosophy of the mind, and the (translated) title of the second book is What is artificial inteligence;
  • The brazilian website Consciência.Org has some publications about philosophy (in it's wider sense);
  • The website of the Federal University of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (which is another good brazilian university) is hosting an interesting article entitled The controversies between dualists and materialists in the contemporary philosophy of mind.

Hope it helps.

Anti-Procreation Movement rewrite

[edit]

Hello Shaggorama. I saw that you wrote an article about the anti-procreation movement and it was deleted for importance. I think you were right in posting the article. It has importance in the online antinatalist movements that are popping up in the cyberworld. The antinatalist view is now a cultural phenomenon that has blossomed heavily since David Benatar wrote his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence. The antinatalist view is that humans are better off not being born (usually for reasons related to suffering of existence compared to nonexistence). Antinatalism has an article, perhaps the Anti-Procreation Movement can be merged into that article. Also, it has relevance in that it is the only modern, activist movement inspired by Schopenhauer's philosophy, as it appears to be more in line with his approach to antinatalism then to Benatar's. It also seems that the movement predates Benatar's book by a year, so its importance as an original antinatalist landmark can also deem it as having significance in the antinatalist community. The fact that it is a movement, and actively tries to seek out people to join up with the cause is also significant. Its aim seems more of an outreach and to grow awareness of the philosophy so this is also significant, as it stands out in contrast to more passive articles on the web. Schopenhauer is also an antinatalist so perhaps, he should have a prominent place in that article along with the Anti-Procreation Movement. A whole revamping of the antinatalism might be in order, that includes Schopenhauer and Anti-Procreation Movement along with possible court cases labeled "wrongful birth" and these sorts of related social topics. I do not however, have the cases right off my head. Ok, these are just some suggestions. Thanks.

Just for the record: Frankly, I don't remember how I first came across the anti-natalism stuff. When I first heard about it, I'm fairly certain I thought it was a joke, but my own personal research revealed that, as you have expressed, it is a real movement. Personal, I think anti-natalism just silly. But in any event, I felt that the topic was notable enough to merit inclusion in wikipedia, so I starteed a stub based on the minimal information I could find; I think Holocaust denial is a pretty dumb idea as well, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have an article (albeit it is a much larger and more known movement). My interest in the topic ends there. It sounds to me like you are much more involved and interested than myself, and I suggest that you lead the crusade in reviving this article yourself. A good place to start would be registering a Username. Good luck. --Shaggorama (talk) 09:09, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and good afternoon (at least it is afternoon where I am). I was looking at the Wikipedian firefighters category and noticed that you are one of the members of the Wikipedia community that lists yourself as being a firefighter. First and foremost let me say thank you for your service. While I myself am not a firefighter, I do work as a photographer with multiple local fire departments. I am honored to have firefighters as some of my closest friends.

I have been taking an active role in the Fire Service WikiProject and am trying to recruit more members to this cause. If this is something you have any interest in, please let me know? You can leave me a message on my talk page. Obviously there is zero obligation. An interest can be anything from helping out with a couple of pages in your local area to helping to overhaul major templates, and anything in between.

Once again, thank you for your service. Hope to hear from you soon. Stay safe! --Zackmann08 (talk) 17:56, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Screensaver Lifesaver

[edit]

The article Screensaver Lifesaver has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A computer project that does not seem to meet wiki guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
