Confusion sentence
[edit]A sentence "Though occasionally people confuse okta 1 with okta 8 leading to great confusion" was added to the end of the first para on 10 March 2012. I propose to delete the sentence because 1) it's an unsubstantiated remark (ie. no citation); and 2) it's not well expressed - no disrespect intended to the writer, but people confusing oktas leads to confusion? It's like saying people laughing leads to laughter, or the cloud raining leads to rain. I also find it hard to believe confusion can arise between 1 (near minimum end of scale) and 8 (maximum), or a clear circle (=clear sky) and a 100% filled circle (=100% cloud cover). In my opinion confusion would be more understandable between the symbols for 1 and 4 (they could be misinterpreted as two different kinds of half-sky), but that's just my opinion - it wouldn't belong in the article. Hope all agree the entire sentence about "great confusion" should have no place. Pete Hobbs (talk) 01:52, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
- Somehow I didn't get around to deleting the sentence described above on 28 March. Nobody has commented since (in support or against) and so I shall now delete the sentence, for the reasons stated. Pete Hobbs (talk) 03:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Where are these Unicode symbols used?
[edit]The Unicode symbols shown for representing the Okta scale seem sufficiently confusing and inconsistent as to have little practical value. Is there an example of somewhere that is actually using these Unicode symbols? Ianhowlett (talk) 10:25, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Pinging User:Dziban303, who added that material to the article. DMacks (talk) 14:37, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- They're used in a terminal-based weather station query tool but I don't remember which; wttr perhaps? It's been a few years. I'm not in the habit of making up filler for WP articles so I find the implication pretty odd. Nor am I quite sure how they could be confusing since they largely match those symbols used on weather charts. In any case, I don't care if the section is removed. ☽Dziban303 »» Talk☾ 17:46, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
Hand drawn maps
[edit]The cloud-cover symbols used in the teleprinter example do not have a one-to-one cprrespondence to each okta. However, there is a broader set of symbols that does. I haven't put it in the article because I can't find a source for this and it is so long ago that I came across them that I can't be sure I have got this exactly right.
