Minor Problem with the Second Party Studios

In the Second Party Studios Subheading, Creatures inc. is given credit for the Mother series, i.e. Earthbound, on both this page and its own. However, to the best of my recollection and moderate research (playing the game), no mention of Creatures inc. was apparent. Rather APE and Shigesato Itoi were the ones listed in both the credits and copyrights.

Tatsumi Kimishima...CEO?

Tatsumi Kimishima is listed as President and CEO in this article. There's no question he is President, but is he CEO too? He's never mentioned as CEO anywhere on Nintendo sites and his official announcement makes no mention of him being CEO either - only Representative Direct (along with Takeda and Miyamoto) and President.[1] -AnonWikiEditor (talk) 06:15, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Unless he gives the title to someone else, he picks up the CEO title. Cards84664 (talk) 11:09, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

New Era

As soon as we get some announcements from Kimishima, Can we start a new era on the timeline? Cards84664 (talk) 11:22, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

The eras listed appear to be driven by the products, not the presidents. Could argue that the "new" era began in March with the mobile announcement, though. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:20, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
That's a pretty big hypothetical question, considering its about "announcements" that have no context or timeline, but in general, it looks like the current "era", "Future: Mobile, and the Nintendo NX" is already mostly about future events, and rather short, so I don't understand why we'd need a new section... Sergecross73 msg me 12:36, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

So you are saying that we should wait until the NX is announced at E3 next year? At that point we can change the name of the future section. Cards84664 (talk) 12:40, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

The years are marked when products are released, not announced. The change from "future" to "present" will likely occur when mobile games start being produced regularly by Nintendo (I don't think side projects like Pokémon GO count). I doubt the NX will be released prior to regular mobile games, but this is merely my own thinking. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:44, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, we'll probably just change it to "Present: Mobile, and the Nintendo NX" and continue working under that, because its already so short, and most of the era span decades, so we don't really need any new ones. (And yes, Cyclone, that's a reasonable thought, as I believe they've confirmed that the first mobile game is supposed to be out in 2015, whereas they're not even discussing NX until 2016...) Sergecross73 msg me 12:49, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
Agreed, just simply change it over to "Present" when the NX releases. Not like Nintendo already has a boatload of mobile games on the market currently. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:04, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

YouTube policy

I am surprised at the lack of mentioning Nintendo's uniquely strict YouTube policy, with major attempts to discourage content creators and removal of videos made on older video games, which is otherwise unheard of.180.200.136.100 (talk) 02:40, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

If someone could make a brief mention written based off of what reliable sources say on the matter, and keep it kept in the context of a decade spanning company, then a mention could be added, but any attempts so far have just read like disgruntled personal rants or sensationalist over-dramatics. In the section 1979-2003 Success with video games videogames, there is a small mistake. It states that Gunpei Yokoi died on 4 october 1996. However he died on 4 October 1997. I would appreciate it if you would change it. Jumpman name

The article states that the iteration of Mario that was featured in Donkey Kong (1981) was known as Jumpman at the time. This is largely not true, as the name never left Japan; Mario was always the name everywhere else. As this article uses an international perspective, it is incorrect to state that Jumpman was the character's name as of this game. To the majority of the world, Jumpman was only a conceptual name.

"Chips and conversion kits were shipped to America in 1981. Arakawa, his wife and a few others changed two thousand Radar Scopes into Donkey Kongs, but Arakawa knew "Jumpman" wouldn't cut it with the Americans. The character needed a real name. His breakthrough came when their landlord burst into a board meeting, demanding long-overdue rent. The man's name was Segali... Mario Segali." http://au.ign.com/articles/2010/09/14/ign-presents-the-history-of-super-mario-bros

If the Jumpman name is to be mentioned, the sentence must be reworded to reflect that it was confined to Japan. Ozdarka (talk) 03:39, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

"Nintendo of America to sell its majority stake in Seattle Mariners"

Should we make mention of NOA's plan to sell its majority stake in the Mariners somewhere in the article? Or would it make more sense to wait until the sale is complete, then update the article to reflect NOA's former majority stake? —zziccardi (talk) 01:04, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

How come no article for Nintendo NX yet?

Okay, so we still know very little about it, but surely the topic itself is important enough to have at least stub-ble of info that can be filled in as Nintendo announces more details. --CaptainNtheGameMaster (talk) 17:46, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Because there are literally zero confirmed facts about it? All we've got are some vague musings by Iwata, and a ton of speculation. You can't really build much of an article around that. There is a rough draft being worked on at Draft:Nintendo NX if you like though, for the meantime until its actually revealed. Sergecross73 msg me 17:49, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
The only thing we actually know about is it that it's a video game system of some kind, made by Nintendo, and it's being released in March 2017. Everything else are just rumors, and many of them even conflict. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 02:39, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
The draft doesn't look that bad actually. Everything is sourced. I've seen stub-articles which are way worse. Are we not creating the article simply to avoid it becoming a target for editors adding speculative material? --CaptainNtheGameMaster (talk) 09:19, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
WP:CRYSTAL is the primary reason its not being created. Although there seems a fair amount of content, almost all of it speculation and rumor. No concrete information exists beyond a product announcement. -- ferret (talk) 11:13, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Exactly. Its generally agreed that, while reliably sourced speculation is acceptable as part of an article, it shouldn't the entirety of the article, which is pretty much is at this point. Like I was saying, we can't even really proper define the subject in this case, other than the extremely vague "future hardware to be released by Nintendo". It's just too soon for an article quite yet. Sergecross73 msg me 12:11, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Infobox company parameters

I would like some input from other editors concerning the infobox parameter documentation, romanized_name: Native name in Latin script. Use only if the company is based in a non-English speaking country and it has no official rendering of its native name in Latin script. If such a rendering exists, assign it to native_name and omit this parameter. My concerns are here in my edit summaries [2] and [3]. kabushikigaisha is in latin script but still not english and should be listed next to its native version, if at all. IMO Nintendō is correct at romanized_name Mlpearc (open channel) 14:36, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Romazined does not mean English, Nintendō is not English and kabushikigaisha is not either. Native name means the native name, while the romanized name parameter simply uses the hepburn-ed version of it. "任天堂株式会社" through hepburn returns "Nintendō kabushikigaisha", wherefore "任天堂株式会社 kabushikigaisha" would be "Nintendō kabushikigaisha kabushikigaisha", what would that be for? I can see where you might be confused, but it clearly says that you should either:
  • a) insert the not-Latin name into native_name and the romanized into romanized_name, or
  • b) insert the official Latin-script name into native_name and leave romanized_name blank completely.
If "Nintendō kabushikigaisha" was the offical name (also in Latin script) in Japan, it would belong into native_name, but the company has a Japanese name in Japanese script, which is why case a) applies: native_name is 任天堂株式会社 and Hepburn-ized makes it "Nintendō kabushikigaisha" (Note that the official translated name is "Nintendo Co., Ltd.", which sits above the infobox). Case b) would apply to companies in countires using Latin script, where that company has a different local name than internationally/in English, I currently have no example as such companies slowly go extinct and adopt English-language names natively or native names internationally. Hope this clears up the confusion. Lordtobi () 14:56, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

What should be included in the infobox?

I'm starting this discussion so we can come to a wp:consensus about what should be included in the infobox. More specifically, I'm talking about the edit that Lordtobi did, which Dissident93 then reverted. Lordtobi then partially reverted them by removing Reggie from the infobox with this edit. I reverted Lordtobi, telling them not to edit war and to come here instead to discuss the change. (That's why I'm starting this section.) Before you say what should and shouldn't be included, please check each editor's edit summary to see what their rationales were. Now, what should be included in the infobox? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gestrid (talkcontribs) 21:11, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

I've pinged both Dissident and Lordtobi to this discussion since they were involved. -- Gestrid (talk) 21:12, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
Your ping did not work, but anyway, they belong per the infobox documentation which states that "Up to four key individuals closely associated with the company" are allowed to be put here. Certainly the company president belongs, as does his two right-hand men that serve as co-directors of the company (not even counting Miyamoto's other contributions with the company). Fils-Aime also belongs because he serves as the COO of their American branch, as well as one of the executive offices in NoJ's board of directors, per their official website. The documentation states that "Generally list prominent, current executives within the company holding key positions such as chairman, chief executive officer, president, VP of design, etc., but do not list roles below chief officer level if they are not notable" to validate my case for him remaining. I don't see any valid reason against this, besides personal opinion. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 01:35, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
It's because I stupidly forgot to sign my post. Let's try pinging Lordtobi again, shall we? -- Gestrid (talk) 03:48, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
I am always open to other people's opinions, wherefore I guess leaving Fils-Aimé is justified, seeing he is notable, even if not directly affiliated with Nintendo Co., Ltd., but with Nintendo of America, Inc. Still I think un-capitalizing should be done. I was linked by Dissident to this page, where Kimishima is only listed as president and not CEO, should the CEO thingy be removed? Lordtobi () 08:56, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Not done I was the one to remove the store from the infobox in the edit mentioned above. I did it for the simple reason that it is not a location of the company itself, but one store that sells licensed merch of it. As regarded by the infobox, "locations" are offices of a company located outside the headquarters, but are a direct part of the company, not a subisidiary, division, or licensee. For example, tinyBuild has its headquarters in Washington State, but another location in the Netherlands (I believe in Utrecht), wherefore it adds up to "2 studios". With this not being the case for the aformentioned store, it should not be added back to the Infobox. Lordtobi () 16:21, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Nintendo changed their logo again in 2016, I suggest to add it to the history of the Nintendo logo section. The current logo color scheme is the Nintendo on white with red background. Luiscarlospando (talk) 19:52, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Not done for now: There's a section above this where consensus to change the logo is still being discussed. -- ferret (talk) 20:01, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Change 'Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console, the Switch.' to 'Nintendo's new hybrid console, the Switch'

Hi,

I think it is necessary to change the text in 'Products (2), 2.1', below the Nintendo Switch's picture to something else that reflects the current situation, such as 'Nintendo's new hybrid console, the Switch'. The Switch is no longer upcoming, rather new. The Wii U should also be changed, from 'The Wii U, Nintendo's latest home console, and successor to the Wii' to 'The Wii U, Nintendo's first console which features a tablet-based controller, and successor to the Wii'

Thanks, Marwan --MarwanSS (talk) 12:23, 4 March 2017 (UTC) Marwan S., 3-4-2017

Partly done: "New hybrid console" was added a while back, but the "tablet-based" comment seems unneeded. A consensus may be your best bet if you feel it should really be added. JTP (talkcontribs) 14:54, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Date of founding

Should actually be 22nd September not 23rd, as verified by the reference contained within the article. Can someone please change this to be correct. Thanks

創 業 明治22年9月

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/outline/index.html

That source actually states the Japanese year and month, not the day and month. 明治22年9月 = Meiji 22 (or 1889) September. AnimeCargirl (talk) 01:22, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Now confirmed, nintendo's new logo is white on red Cards84664 (talk) 14:45, 20 October 2016 (UTC) https://www.nintendo.co.jp/switch/index.html

It is just used there and nowhere else; official homepage still uses grey logo, and no confirmation has been seen beyond that. Lordtobi () 14:53, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Nintendo's main website in the US is using the white on red logo. I'll have to say that the change is possible. Lets wait a little longer to make sure. (76.1.121.138 (talk) 16:58, 20 October 2016 (UTC))
Nintendo of America are the only ones with the red logo. The European and Japanese sites and social media accounts continue to use the grey and have for months, so we shouldn't change it until they do. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 18:48, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
It seems the white on red wall logo is only used on a marketing scale rather than their actual corporate identity, likely reflecting the Nintendo Switch's and possibly the My Nintendo logos, which use the same colours. Nintendo Australia's official website is now using the white on red wall logo, by the way. Hope(N Forever) (talk) 18:06, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't think we should consider changing the logo here until the corporate side does it, or at least Nintendo Japan does, but it's something to look out for now. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:08, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
Nintendo Japan have officially changed it, as well as their Twitter. Adam tighe (talk) 16:58, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
The world site is still grey, as is the main company logo at the bottom of most pages. Don't confuse the regional website logos as corporate logo. Note the company info pages here and here. -- ferret (talk) 17:26, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Changing it to newest logo. I presume the only reason the logo is still grey on corporate pages is because web development for said pages have not occurred yet. European webpage has recently changed to red on white, but some pages still remain with the original grey, because development is still in progress. Latest amiibo packaging uses red on white. If these items are being changed, the corporate identity will most likely be changed as well. If disputed, obviously, disregard this and change it back. RomaniPi (talk) 13:12, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
I'm going to ping WP:VG to get a few more eyes on it, since this section has had only a few editors involved thus far. -- ferret (talk) 14:34, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Unless you have confirmation from actual corporate documents (not a web page) that they have colorized the logo, this seems a flimsy excuse to change from the grey version. As noted, regional offices may modify the core logo to their purposes. --MASEM (t) 19:56, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Well, Nintendo of Japan's homepage and social media accounts seems to have gone with the red logo now, which was the one thing holding this back originally. Nintendo's next shareholder meeting is at the end of March, so I say we should wait to see if they have any changes (the current IR page still uses grey). ~ Dissident93 (talk) 04:39, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Which does clearly seem to be tied to the Switch branding too. So I do agree waiting until March makes sense. --MASEM (t) 03:08, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
I actually was right the first time, their last shareholder meeting was a few days ago. Anyway, they were still using the grey logo in their presentation material, so it likely remains a promotional thing only, for now. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 11:57, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Coming back to this, but Nintendo does seem to be using this worldwide for marketing material and has for the past half-year. Is it time for us to change it too? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 16:11, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
@Dissident93: If they are using the red and white logo everywhere now, then yes, it's time for a change. DBZFan30 (talk) 16:19, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
My only argument against was that NOA was the only party using the new design, and as such not Nintendo Co., Ltd. which is discussed in the article. However, they https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ have also adpoted it, so a change would be reasonable. Lordtobi () 16:21, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
Well, not technically everywhere, but this is more likely to do with them just forgetting than something deliberate, as the Japanese homepage and social media accounts have used this for the past 7 months, which was my main argument against this in the past. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 16:24, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
Nintendo's most recent CSR report uses the new logo. Cards84664 (talk) 16:54, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
That it does. One thing to mention is that this should be considered a new logo, not a return to the one from the NES days due to it actually be inverted color wise. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 17:17, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Logos and eras

While it's not completely clear-cut, it appears to me that since Nintendo became a primarily video game company, each logo it's had since has corresponded to the leadership of a certain CEO. Red with while filling for Yamauchi, transparent monochrome for Iwata, and white-on-red for Kimishima. In both the latter cases, each revision was introduced around the time of (and also matches the logo colors of) the first home console release made under that CEO (Wii and Switch, although Iwata was also head for most of the GameCube years). I was wondering on how to include this in the logos section if at all, or am I just seeing patterns that aren't there? VinLAURiA (talk) 03:48, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

  • How is this any different from trivia? Nintendo never comments on it, nor have any sources, so even if this was true, I wouldn't document it here. And the latest logo seemed to correlate more with the Switch launching/ending of the Wii branded era than anything else. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 17:54, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

New Mobile Games

As of October 27, 2017, the article's section on mobile games has not been updated to include the new mobile game Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp which was debuted during a Nintendo Direct announcement[1] on October 25, 2017 and is set to release in the US and UK in November 2017. The game is already available in Australia[2].

The rest of the article however is well sourced and seems to be up to date! Mattesonhaglund (talk) 13:50, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Potential free photograph

[11]

There's a photo of the original HQ for Nintendo in Kyoto which appears to have been taken in the 19th Century. This would make it clearly free by copyright (pre 1923 publishing), and would be great to add, but I'm not yet assured of the date of the photo. --Masem (t) 15:33, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Virtual Boy should be under "Home Consoles" in between N64 and Super Nintendo

The Virtual Boy is missing under the Home Consoles section.

It is more or less a home console/table-top console and should be included under Home Consoles in between N64 and Super Nintendo. It is remiss to leave it out of that section and revisionist to pretend Nintendo never released it in between those consoles.

The Virtual Boy is in fact mentioned briefly under the 1979–2003: Success with video games section. Its brief description is due to its brief relevance. Cards84664 (talk) 20:57, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Controversies

Why does this article not have a Controversies section like many other video game company articles? Nintendo is not immune to controversy, such as the lawsuit re: hand injuries when playing Mario Party, their YouTube policies, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:8A:4302:9B4A:F80B:8916:41A4:C236 (talk) 13:08, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

(discussion) Earnings should not be in Yen

This is Nintendo's English Wikipedia page.

  • English speakers understand are far more likely to understand the value of Pounds, Dollars or Euros.
  • Few Japanese people speak English and therefore are unlikely to view this page.
  • Wikipedia pages for Asian multinational's are usually not in their local currency.

Therefore, why is Nintnedo's shown in Yen?

Ned (talk) 23:45, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Nope; we use the currency that the company uses in its financial report - it would be problematic to convert it (what conversion rate do we use?) Now if Nintendo's financials also gave dollars in addition to yen, I would agree we'd prefer to use that but that's not what they give. --Masem (t) 00:01, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Prior to November 24, 2018 the article was written in American English. It should never have been changed to British English per MOS:STYLERETAIN. Nintendo also produced a limited run of the NES Classic Edition in 2016. The NES Classic System was a dedicated console modeled after an NES with 30 built-in classic first- and third-party games from the NES library. GA/FA push

After a brief discussion on the Video games WikiProject about making this article as well as Sony Interactive Entertainment potential GAs, I'm starting a discussion here. A few of my concerns are that the lead should be at least three to four paragraphs since the article is over 50,000 characters per WP:LEAD. Also, since there's unsourced material, is it possible to put a "references to use" section in the talk page?

The goal is to take this article up to GA and eventually FA status for a potential TFA post on September 23, 2019 in time for the company's 130th anniversary.

Anyone is welcome to assist in this process and I'm open to suggestions. Thanks, Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 06:36, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Similar to my comments before, here's the biggest issues:

I hope the above is of some help. I review GAs quite a bit, and these things would put me off immediately. I haven't looked into the prose at all, but I'm sure that isn't too bad. If this is too harsh/not helpful, feel free to ignore. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:05, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
