Newton in Domesday Book

[edit]

I believe the entry in Mr Storer's The Parish of Blackwell to be incorrect, although correctly quoted by the contributor. According to Domesday Book Derbyshire published by Phillimore , in which the original and a translation is shown , there is no mention of "Blackwelle", The full translation reads as follows:

In NEWTON Leofric and Leofnoth had 3c. of land taxable. Land for 5 ploughs. Now in lordship 1 plough: 13 villagers and 4 smallholders who have 5 ploughs. A priest, who has 1 smallholder; meadow, 7 acres: woodland pasture 1 league long and 1/2 wide. Value before 1066 £4; now 30s. Ralph holds it.
