Semi-protected edit request on 2 March 2014

please change "Nelly Kim Furtado (born December 2, 1978) is a Canadian singer, songwriter and actress." to "Nelly Kim Furtado, ComIH (born December 2, 1978) is a Canadian singer, songwriter and actress." Could you also add the Category:Commanders of the Order of Prince Henry at the end of the page? Nelly Furtado was awarded "Commander of the Order of Prince Henry" on February 28th 2014, in Toronto, by the President of the Portuguese Republic.

Partly done: I've added the Category:Commanders of the Order of Prince Henry per this request, but see no reason to add the ComIH to the lede at this time. I'm guessing there is a MOS someplace that shows what the proper usage of such titles are, but I'm not familiar with it. Perhaps you could link me to that or someone else more familiar will come along and add that for you. I'll leave the request open for a week to allow either of those to happen. Thanks for your contribution to the English Wikipedia. — {{U|Technical 13}} (tec) 14:59, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Duet with Michael Bublé

Nelly Furtado was featured on Michael Bublé's 2005 album It's Time, singing a duet on "Quando, Quando, Quando". Could this be added to the description of her early career? Jojopeanut (talk) 01:27, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Behind Your Back

Should there be a mention of her non-album single 'Behind Your Back' in her career biography. Furtado has described the track as an "appetizer" for her upcoming album? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SpaceBoots12 (talkcontribs) 09:24, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Infobox genres -- picking two to four of them

At Template:Infobox_musical_artist#genre the instructions tell us to list two to four genres in the infobox, and to aim for generality. Let's stop trying to put seven genres into the infobox!

Genres for song articles are sourced from reviewers who describe the song. Genres for albums are sourced from reviewers who describe the whole album, the overall genre of the album. Album genres are not supposed to be collection of genres taken from the songs found on the album.

Similarly, genres for musical artists are sourced from reviewers talking about the artist herself, not from songs or album genres. For instance, the album Classical Barbra is in the genre of classical music, but Barbra Streisand is not listed as having a classical music genre herself. So to get the infobox genres for Furtado, we should find reviewers talking about Furtado being a pop artist or whatever they say. Not reviewers talking about an album or a song.

Furtado has put out music with lots of genres. As an artist, she has been described as shifting from her early genres to become an R&B songstress later in her career, in the manner of Janet Jackson etc. Let's gather some sources to see what they say. Binksternet (talk) 23:13, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Pinging Formation1234. You need to discuss this stuff or you'll be blocked. Binksternet (talk) 16:40, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Not shure whats the point of arguing with a 55 year old man who clearly knows nothing about Nelly Furtado or her music, or is educated in her biography. Maybe you should get educated on her before starting revert wars on an opinion you know nothing about. The fact that you said "nobody calls her a Latin singer, or a Worldbeat singer." just shows you have no idea what your talking about.

Why reverting and removing genres while keeping some in her main page? Seems to me its more about your PERSONAL opinion, than whats the generally correct.

Your argument on how an album needs have ONE genre only makes no sense at all. Albums that have different sounds are also displayed with genres the sources say. It doesnt matter if it has one genre of five.

You make up several excuses like they are "influences" or something else which really doesnt make much sense when the source itself says OTHERWISE. --Formation1234 (talk) 18:57, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia gets genres from sources. An editor who is deaf can read the sources and tell the reader a summary of what the sources say. It doesn't matter that I'm 55, and also doesn't matter that I bought my daughter a copy of the first Nelly Furtado album because I was amazed at the sound of her first single. We don't need to listen to the music to write down the genres for the reader.
You misunderstand my point about overall album genre. An album can have several overall genres – it depends on what the sources say. But the sources should be talking about the album, not about a particular song.
If the source says the artist was influenced by certain genres it is not the same as saying the artist produces music in those genres. Simple English. Binksternet (talk) 19:07, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Relationship status clarification

I saw the update and roll back of the divorced to "split" status, and heard Nelly in a radio show saying she wished wiki would be updated. I sent an email to her management company, asking if they would care to make an official staement that we could link. i'll let you know what infor I hear back, if any. Ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, redux

This was discussed before with no consensus for inclusion in the lead. The citations did not specifically say that she has dual nationality. What do others think? --Malerooster (talk) 23:36, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

According to the Presidency of Portuguese Republic she has portuguese citizenship. In Portugal she is considered a national singer.PassenzaT (talk) 07:12, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks PassenzaT, the second source wouldn't really be sufficient to establish dual nationality, which is what we are looking for in the lead sentence if we are to include both nationalities. I can't read the first source. Can we find an english source? Does she hold a Portuguese passport? --Malerooster (talk) 16:20, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
You're welcome Malerooster. I'm searching for new sources in english. The main source says: "According to the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the singer of Portuguese and Canadian nationality Nelly Furtado will receive the Order of Prince Henry."PassenzaT (talk) 03:16, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Shouldn't she just be "Canadian", as far as the lede is concerned?

Furtado is mentioned as having dual Portuguese and Canadian citizenship and that is covered in her infobox, but as far as the lede is concerned, isn't she just Canadian? She was born and raised in Canada and began her career in Canada. Her notable activities have primarily been in Canada/USA and as of 2017, she still resides in Toronto (I haven't seen any reliable and recent 2020 sources stating that she doesn't live at least part-time in Toronto or Canada in general anymore). As well as New York, as covered in the article. Source stating she also lives in Toronto "Along with her weekend dwelling in New York City, former west coaster Nelly Furtado has called Toronto home for a while."

There are many celebs and notable people who have citizenship to other countries but only get described as being "Canadian" or "American" or whatever in their lede per MOS:BLPLEAD (although their articles/infobox will mention if they hold citizenship to other countries and family background). This includes fellow Canadian singer Avril Lavigne, although her dual citizenship is between Canada and France. So shouldn't Furtado be the same? Clear Looking Glass (talk) 00:26, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Clear Looking Glass: First off the sources that are provided dont mention anything regarding having any citizenship in Portugal, you can’t just change that. Her nationality IS Portuguese-Canadian due to the fact her parents hail from Portugal although she was born in Canada. You are only looking at “citizenship” that’s not the point. Her nationality is Portuguese-Canadian. Many sources refer to her as a Portuguese-Canadian singer. And when you are in the middle of a discussion do not change information after a resolution hasn’t even been done, I’d recommend reverting your edits back until this matter has been compromised.

Pillowdelight (talk) 01:59, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Pillowdelight: - Then following your logic, every American and Canadian born to foreign parents, be it from France, Ireland/the UK, Sweden, Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, etc should all be described as being "[insert whatever]-Canadian/American/whatever country" in their nationality but they aren't. I have showed you tons of people who have parents from foreign countries, but their nationality isn't described as being [insert country]-Canadian/American. It's very common for articles to describe people, especially Americans and Canadians as being [insert whatever country]-American/Canadian usually because their parents come from those places even if they were born/raised/live in Canada or America or whatever. I'll take out her citizenship but I will leave her lede and all other articles associated with her as only saying "Canadian" Clear Looking Glass (talk) 02:41, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Please also review Wikipedia:Race and ethnicity, it states “White people as a sociological grouping is another thing entirely, at least in certain contexts, like the socio-economics of Western societies, the history of imperial colonialism, and many other topics of great encyclopedic importance. But that has nothing to do with whether to label a composer or a biologist as ethnically white. If we wouldn't willy-nilly apply that particular pseudo-ethnicity, then why label some other biography subject as being "Hispanic" or "Afro-Canadian" or "part-Asian, part-Arab", unless the subject and most critical literature about the subject also use the label and make a big deal out of it?

It makes much more sense to simply say where people are from, and leave ethnicity, race, ancestry, heritage completely out of it – unless and until we have proof from reliable sources or the subject's own material that such an identification is integral to who they are and what they do/did – i.e., it's directly tied to their notability.”

She’s stated within her “nationality” until you changed it to “Citizenship” that she doesn’t think she’s either Canadian or Portuguese she equally believes she’s both. Which would initially be allowed as “Portuguese-Canadian” since she has stated it. Pillowdelight (talk) 02:21, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Clear Looking Glass: it’s stated that she equally believes she’s both Canadian and Portuguese, not one or the other. Which is simply allowed to state “Portuguese-Canadian” since she’s stated it and sources have also referred to her as a Portuguese-Canadian singer. You would clearly be violating this.

Pillowdelight (talk) 02:48, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Pillowdelight: - So what? Countless Canadians and Americans (I know Nelly's from Canada but still) whose family immigrated from all over the world say similar things like Nelly Furtado. There are Canadians/Americans/etc who have German, French, Italian, Danish, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican heritage and so on and or they have parents who immigrated from those aforementioned countries and its not uncommon for them to say they're [whatever]-Canadian/American. If they're notable and have an article on Wikipedia, they usually just get listed as being "Canadian" or "American" as far as nationality and article is concerned so... Clear Looking Glass (talk) 02:53, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
@Clear Looking Glass: And again, its literally stated above from Wikipedia:Race and ethnicity that it’s allowed to state Portuguese-Canadian as long as the subject has stated it and reliable sources have also stated it— which she has and sources have as well. Again, you would clearly be violating this. Doesn’t matter if you believe she is or isn’t. You’re not following it.

Pillowdelight (talk) 03:01, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

@Pillowdelight: - Fine. I'll leave her nationality in the infobox as being "Canadian/Portuguese" until further notice and or other users chime into the debate but as far as her lede is concerned, she's just Canadian as are all the other ledes in other articles associated with her. You yourself said none of the sources state she has dual citizenship. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 03:05, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
A month late, but  Done, as no one else has commented or shared their thoughts. The past consensus/discussion according to her talk page archives was that she has dual Portuguese/Canadian nationality, as stated by the sources provided in the nationality section of her infobox. This info is also allowed according to the guidelines on Wikipedia:Race and ethnicity, so I've kept her nationality as saying she's "Portuguese/Canadian". But as mentioned above, since the sources provided don't say she holds dual citizenship, she was born/raised in and is most notable in Canada and following MOS:BIOLEAD, I've kept her lede and the citizenship section in her infobox as only saying "Canadian". Clear Looking Glass (talk) 08:01, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Label

Nelly Furtado has been listed as a signee to Better Noise Music for several years now, is there a reason to omit this information from the page? See the roster: https://betternoise.com/artists Yucca1992 (talk) 04:37, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
