Tower?

[edit]

Perhaps Nauvoo Bell Tower is a more appropriate title? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:08, 6 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tough one, largely because its common name is based on a long-held misunderstanding. I knew this article was in need of an update based the recently published research, but was waiting to see what the church did with the tower and bell, as they've been removed from Temple Square. If the tower ends up being displayed again, it's doubtful it will have any connection or interpretation related to a Nauvoo Bell going forward. If it never goes on display again, it will never have the chance to receive a different common name. That said, per WP:UCRN: "inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used." Since we know Nauvoo Bell is an inaccurate name, perhaps we deviate from its commonly used name and use a more "official" name, such as Relief Society Memorial Campanile (see: Deseret News, 25 July 1942) or Relief Society Centennial Memorial Bell Tower (see: Relief Society Magazine, 1967)?
