The statement about Weideman in the 1958 grandfinal "Weideman's deliberate and continuous intimidation of his star Melbourne opponent Ron Barassi was a major factor in the Magpies eking out an unexpected three goal win." is unsourced, and sounds partisan. It is clearly in part in error. In fact Weideman's opponent was Don Williams, not Barassi. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_VFL_Grand_Final) Weideman played centre-half-forward whereas Barassi was a ruck-rover, so they would have mostly been on different parts of the ground. (Players kept to position far more in those days.) Also the Magpies did not "eke out a win" . They were 5 goals up at three-quarter time (a very big margin in those days, and on a wet ground), and won by three goals. Claims that the Magpies physically intimidated their opponents in this game are not new, but it is unclear how large a part this played in the reversal of the result in the second semi-final, two weeks earlier, when Melbourne easily beat the Magpies on a dry ground. Such claims should be backed by sources, including the reports on this game by the football writers in the major Melbourne newspapers Accordingly I have significantly changed the sentence, but would not oppose the restoration of its claims if good evidence for them can be offered. I have since realised that much of the relevant evidence is available on the Melbourne Football Club website http://demonwiki.org/Grand+Final+1958 and also on the links it offers to the text of articles by football reporters in 1958 in the Melbourne "Age", as well as to surviving newsreel footage of parts of the 1958 grand final. None of these sources record Weideman's "deliberate and continuous intimidation of Ron Barassi", though they do record that Barassi "was reprimanded for striking Murray Weideman in the face during the third quarter". They also lay far more stress on the Magpies' football merits. The Age football writer Percy Beames wrote that the Magpies won "by playing football almost perfectly suited to the conditions"; and the Melbourne site records that the Melbourne coach Norm Smith told the Magpies ""We have no regrets. On the day you were by far the better side." Marcasella (talk) 00:52, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
