Etymology
[edit]In the decision by the US Board on Geographic Names, the toponym is attributed to Henry Gannett naming the landform in 1874 for "Augustus Daly, then president of the National Geographic Society." Two issues seem to make this an apparent error. First, there is no record of such person as president, and secondly the National Geographic Society wasn't founded until 1888. So Gannett's 1905 The Origin of Certain Place Names in the United States is the credible source for the toponym's origin. Gannett was a member of the American Geographical Society concurrently with Charles P. Daly. Ron Clausen (talk) 10:35, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
