What?

[edit]

In the section on Mollie's early life the word "vocation" appears in blue with an underscore. What is that? There is nothing on the Edit page to which indicates and internal link or underscore. If you hover the cursor over "vocation" some kind of advertisement appears. Can anyone explain this to me? I would remove the blue and underlining if I could. Thank you.Hammerdrill (talk) 21:18, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

18th and 19th Century ferries, part of West of the Hudson

[edit]

I accessed this article to see if there was any information about the type of vessel used on this crossing during the horse ferry era, roughly from 1814 when the patent for the horse ferry was awarded to Moses Rogers until 1862 when the mule powered ferry at Milton New York was taken out of service. The author speculates that a horse ferry might have been in use on this crossing at a time (1770s) before there were any (at least documented) horse powered vessels in use anywhere in North America, and does not appear to know that there were some very large periaugers; there's a reference in A Dictionary of American English on p 1717, under the heading "periagua" and citing a printed source from 1744 "These periaugers are long flat bottomed boats, carrying from twenty to thirty five tons..." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.161.60.191 (talk) 21:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
