General Suggestion - 2006

[edit]

Some suggestions to improve this article: Separate the info on the Mitchell Brothers themselves with the Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre info to separate articles. This theatre itself was originally strictly porn-movie theatre as I understand in but was later converted into a strip club/porn theatre in the mid to late '70s. There was also a second Mitchell Brothers porn theater in Berkeley, California during the mid to late 1970's (if I'm remembering correctly). This article could do a better job discussing their history with porn films including infamous films they released such as Behind the Green Door. This article should briefly mention the theatre but leave the major details to the separate article. Also, the brothers where subjected to a number of obscenity lawsuits in the '70s which should be mentioned. --Cab88 10:14, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested merge to Mitchell brothers

[edit]

I don't see this as being needed. Both articles are fine. One is about people and the other about a building. The categories for these two are very different and leaving both articles is not a problem. There might be some cleanup required in both articles to reduce any overlap with the text. Hunter S. Thompson

[edit]

It's mentioned in the article that Hunter S. Thompson was 'falsely reported' to having been the theater's night manager. However, is the 'false report' referring to the year in particular? Because I'm pretty sure Dr. Thompson himself spoke of his experiences there as the night manager. I'd have to check one of his books to be sure, but as soon as I can look it up I can share more info.--MythicFox 09:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen this reported in Jim Mitchell's obit as well. Capitalistroadster 00:14, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HST was *not* the night manager at any time, even though he claimed he was in 1985. Can you imagine a famous writer trying to run a very busy nightclub despite having no managerial experience? Ludicrous. He hung around the O'Farrell but that was all. George415 (talk) 16:52, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Artie Fund

[edit]

Ever since Artie Mitchell died in 1991, people have been donating money to The Artie Fund, a charity that raises funds for Center Point Rehabilitation Center in San Rafael, California and the San Francisco Surf and Rescue Squad. I wonder how many of those people realize that they are actually donating money to help cover up the fact that Jim cold-bloodedly murdered his own brother? Our Uncle and our Father weren't nearly as close as people were led to believe. Though they were business partners and brothers, their once tight friendship had deteriorated over the years due to Jim's jealousy, anger, and greed. Have you been duped into believing that Jim is sorry for committing fratricide?

Jim created the "Artie Fund" to deflect attention from how Art Mitchell actually died. From their literature, it sounds like Artie was a man who sadly died of a drug overdose. Never is it mentioned that he was shot to death in his own home. A charity in Art Mitchell's name should raise money to support gun control legislation! While our family will always be grateful to the Surf and Rescue Squad of the S.F. Fire Department for saving Art, Jim, and our brothers from a near fatal surfing accident, it is pathetic how that department has allowed their good name to be manipulated to redeem Jim Mitchell.

As for Centerpoint Rehabilitation Center, they were picked at random simply because it was a rehab center near to the home where Art was murdered. The Artie Fund's propaganda spouts ridiculous rhetoric along the lines of: "Had Artie realized his addictions perhaps he would have sought help at Centerpoint..." The Artie Fund donates money to a drug rehabilitation center in order to make it appear that Artie died due to a drug and alcohol related incident. Artie's drinking actually had nothing to do with his death. Jim murdered Artie because he wanted complete control over the O'Farrell Theatre. Jim sought control of all the money and all of the power. He got exactly what he wanted!

Jim never wanted his brother to get rehabilitation. That was simply the defense he used at his trial. Jim was not supportive while Art spent eleven of his last days going cold turkey sober, trying his best to tackle his alcoholism on his own. Art's oldest child personally implored Jim to help the family do an intervention to get Art help. Jim declined, saying it'd be "a pain" to do because of their infamous reputation. Murder it seems was a better option to him.

Jim gives money to the Fire Department in order to make him self more powerful and he calls it the Artie Fund in an attempt to make people forget that he murdered Artie. Our father didn't die of hypothermia! The Artie Fund is Jim's legal way to pay off San Francisco officials.

Jim Mitchell killed a man who was loved by all who knew him. Jim Mitchell was already a rich and powerful man, powerful enough to get away with murder, but he wanted more. Our father had six children, ages 8 thru 20, at the time he died. Our Uncle has never tried to explain to any of us why he took our father from us, because it is obvious why he did it. Jim planned the murder of Artie long before that night. The Artie Fund is part of the scheme to make Jim look like he did nothing wrong!

The punishment in California for First Degree murder for financial gain is supposed to be life in prison but due to the incapable D.A. John Posey, he was only convicted of voluntary manslaughter. Jim had enough connections and money to pretty much get away with it. Even back when Dianne Feinstein was mayor of San Francisco the Mitchell Brothers had all the big wigs in San Francisco in their pockets. The mayor and the sheriff of San Francisco wrote letters to the judge in Jim Mitchell's favor. He served only three years in San Quentin.

Artie wrote his will only thirteen days before his death making Jim primary trustee, never suspecting that Jim would be the one to take his life. Before Jim could be told that he could not be the trustee of his victims' children's money, he assigned the job to his mother, Georgia Mae Mitchell, and his accountant Ruby Richardson. Georgia stopped communicating with her grandchildren after Artie's death and she did whatever Jim told her to do on matters concerning Artie's children's trust. Artie's will bequeath everything to his six children but they never received the majority of it. The Mitchell family split up into two separate families. Those who were loyal to Artie stopped communicating with Jim. Those who were greedy went along with Jim pretending that Art's death had been an accident.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm in Hamlet's predicament. Will my father's soul be able to rest if I don't do something about this injustice? Jim killed my father and got away with it! He served only three years for what everyone knows was First Degree murder! He became twice as rich and twice as powerful! He has killed our father and he continues to live the leisurely life of a King. He has given our father an unearned terrible reputation in an attempt to justify his homicidal act.

The books X-Rated and Bottom Feeders and the movie Rated X are essentially fiction. Very few people know the truth and those who do have either been keeping it a secret for Jim's sake or do not want to exploit our family. We would like to keep our lives private, but if the public must know, we would prefer that they know the truth. Don't believe the lies that you see on television and read in the paper. I was watching A&E the other night and I got sick when I heard a man say "Artie would have found it humorous that Jim got away with murder." Our father was a very humorous man but this situation is far from funny.

Jim Mitchell was not looking out for his brother the night that he shot and killed him. Jim Mitchell is a heartless, Mafioso want-to-be, greedy, sick man. He not only "killed the party when he killed Artie" he killed our father and best friend, broke our hearts and destroyed our family. He threatened to take it a step further a few days after killing Artie when he approached Art's ex-wife Karen Mitchell, while she was watching her son's baseball game. I was standing only a few yards away when he told my mother that "anyone who has anything to do with the making of the movie is going to be looking down the barrel of a shotgun". I wish he had said that to Emilio Estevez.

I heard a juror say that he didn't think that Jim Mitchell was the type to kill again. He may not be a serial killer but he is a cold man who does what needs to be done to get what he wants.

I had not even reached my teenage years when I lost my faith in the justice system. If you have enough money you can get away with anything. Jim Mitchell proved that long before O.J. Simpson. The entire story Jim Mitchell's attorneys told at the trial is false. Art didn't call Jim's house and leave answering machine messages threatening to kill Jim before Jim decided to kill Art first. Jim's wife, Lisa, didn't erase the messages by mistake that night. There were never any messages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.172.10.161 (talk) 21:06, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And where is O.J. now? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.69.34.203 (talk) 21:13, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removed sentence about son being accused of crime

[edit]

I removed a sentence about one of their son's being accused of a crime and awaiting sentencing. It does not mention a conviction, and, even if so, it makes no direct correlation to the subjects of the article other than the fact that he is related to the Mitchell brothers. Notoriety is not inherited. Also, the source given is not linked to anything. Just a headline attributed to the AP, so I can't really verify. But even if it was, I still don't think its appropriate. I would appreciate discussion before it's re-included. Quinn BEAUTIFUL DAY 07:00, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
