[edit]Speculation as to why The Cardinals hired Matheny is not encyclopedic and may not be inserted without reliable sources Alt Content (talk) 10:30, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
- agreed - sources are required for all content, particularly commentary and analysis. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:54, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]A reader suggested that the section on Real Estate Venture should be removed. I invited them to join here and explain their position.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:41, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
- It is important because it is notable and newsworthy. --Elcid.ruderico (talk) 04:37, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
- In my opinion, it can be debated that the entry can be removed without significantly affecting the article. Wikipedia is not a newspaper. Wikipedia also stresses that articles should be written with a long term historical perspective. Fifty or seventy-five years from now, would the fact that Matheny suffered a setback during the 2008 financial collapse as did millions of other people, be of any historical significance worthy of mention in the article? Also, the fact that his sizeable salary as Cardinals' manager will probably have him out of debt before long. From a long term historical perspective, I can see how the importance of this section is diminished.Orsoni (talk) 15:58, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
- All valid points. Not all steps are significant long-term, but it is still worthy of summary. It is significant in the amount of loss Matheny had in relation to his career earnings. What you mentioned in that his salary as a manager will soon likely allow him to fully recover and prosper is also significant in that it will have shown that he was able to move on. Since I have not seen any monetary figures on Matheny's salary as manager, I would consider that speculation to this point. It is probable, that should he continue to succeed as the Cardinals manager, there may be some kind of news of him moving into his family into their own home around the end of this contract or by 2020, and that would be a fitting coda to the event. --Elcid.ruderico (talk) 20:52, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
- (new to editing). In 2013, I also asked to remove this section but feared the consesus process would draw more unwanted attention. As a casual WP reader, I wanted to read a baseball player’s biography and avoid controversy in the news. I turned to other media to learn about Matheny and watched his speaking engagements. Matheny’s charitable works are too many to cite. Listing them would detract from the central topic of a baseball player. I think this current version is unnecessarily too long. As for income to debt ratio, salaries were publicly announced yet there are three children’s college tuitions to calculate. My opinion about Matheny’s family living with his wife’s parents is to keep them all safe since he spends so much time on the road, on and off Season. I appreciate everyone’s work, here. More controversy to come but as a new contributor, I’d like to see WP steer clear of it.(Mach672 (talk) 01:26, 21 July 2015 (UTC))

mathenaging needs to go.
[edit]Further into his tenure as manager, Matheny's questionable managerial abilities have been termed "Mathenaging"
a link straight to a list of viva el birdo generic blog posts??
if nothing else kill the link
the fact that deadspin and el birdos have a comedic word for some criticism seems less than encyclopedic — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.107.184.244 (talk) 01:04, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Erasing the whole section because of the use of the term Mathenaging is overkill. The focus on Viva El Birdos, which does have opinion pieces, ignores the analytical pieces that is also offers, based especially on sabermetric research. They weren't all "generic blog posts."
Furthermore, there were many other sources that were in the deleted section.
Even though the use of the term Mathenaging goes beyond Deadspin and Viva El Birdos, that part of the sentence could be removed and the rest of the removed section could and should be restored. The rest of the Leadership and Skills Profile is fawning at least or hagiographic at worst. UofIx3 (talk) 01:58, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
I agree, the entire "Leadership and Skills Profile" section is absurd. No other MLB manager that I can find has a section like that on their page. I understand that Matheny's continued employment by the Cardinals is a contentious topic, but his Wiki page is not the place for this debate. The whole thing should be gone. 2001:579:E014:1A00:E0EF:99DD:480E:5903 (talk) 22:52, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
