Info box titles
I changed the top info box to indicate that it was for the Windows version, not all of Microsoft Office. User Sek-2 wrote the following in Talk:Microsoft_Office/Archive_3:
- (1) Office 365 is probably the most common nowadays, but perpetual versions are still widely used
- (2) I don't see why just because the Mac edition is called Microsoft Office for Mac then the Windows version has to be :labeled as "Microsoft Office (for Windows)"; people already get it from the fact that only Windows is listed under the :operating system field.
- (3) yes, the Mac version was apparently released before the Windows version, but the Windows version is by far the most :known and used version. --Sek-2 (talk) 12:27, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
This is a misunderstanding of what this page is. This page is about the family of Microsoft Office products, not about any current version of Microsoft Office. The first paragraph begins Microsoft Office, or simply Office, is a family of client software, server software, and services developed by Microsoft. It was first announced by Bill Gates on August 1, 1988, ...
Microsoft Office is the family name. It is also, sometimes along with Office 365 used to refer to the current Windows version of Microsoft Office. The Mac version used to be called Microsoft Office as well. When it was introduced, it was the only version and it kept that name even after the Windows version of Office was released. In fact, if you look at [this page], you can see that the original version for Windows was called The Microsoft Office for Windows. Today, Microsoft does not appear to sell any product that is named simply Microsoft Office. These are all the products listed on www.microsoft.com:

Yeah, I was surprised there were so many versions too. None are named Microsoft Office by itself. None use the word "Microsoft" as part of the name. It looks like all are sold under the same name for both Mac and PC, with the caveat that Access is Windows-only. Users buy a version of Office and then activate it on a device of their choosing. I could not find a single place using the name "Microsoft Office for Mac". The closest is this page which uses the name "Office for Mac". The about boxes within the various products on Mac do not say either "Microsoft Office for Mac" or "Office for Mac". Instead, they say, for example "Microsoft® Word for Mac".
In summary "Microsoft Office for Mac" is not a name Microsoft currently used, nor is it the name they originally used. Although Microsoft used it at one time, today it is a description, not a name, for the series of products for Mac from 1988 to today. Similarly, the name "Microsoft Office" has been used to describe both the Windows and Mac versions at various times, was not the original of the Windows version and does not appear to be used by itself for the current Windows version.
Having the info box for the Windows version say "Microsoft Office" with no indication that this is only about the history of Microsoft Office for Windows is both inaccurate and misleading, and it is not consistent with other info boxes on Wikipedia. It is not correct for the current version, nor is it correct with historical versions. I will add that I am frustrated that somebody would revert my change twice without doing any actual research into the subject and without citing any sources.
Sek-2, please undo your revert or come up with suitable alternate info box names that are accurate.

- ...Huh? I literally only had to Google "Microsoft Office for Mac", and this is the first result: https://products.office.com/en-us/mac/microsoft-office-for-mac Straight from Microsoft's Office.com website, with the sentence "Welcome to the new Office for Mac!" written in big, bold letters. "Office for Mac" is the official name for the Mac version of Office, case closed. It's also used by several third-party sources, see: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. --Sek-2 (talk) 00:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- More sources that refer to it as "Microsoft Office for Mac": Apple.com, 9to5mac.com, Windows Central, TechRadar, Bleeping Computer, The New York Times, Engadget, ZDNet. --Sek-2 (talk) 19:27, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- Let me see if I understand you. You just said Microsoft doesn't use the name "Microsoft Office for Mac". We agree on that! Thanks for making that clear.
- As you noted, they use "Office for Mac" in one place on their web site in a way that does not state it's a product name. In fact, it looks like the name is "Office" and it is "for Mac" since they also use "Office" and "Office 365" without "for Mac". And you ignored every other argument I made. So, as you say, case closed. "Microsoft Office for Mac" is not the name Microsoft currently uses and it was not the original name either. It may have been a name Microsoft used in between. Similarly, Microsoft no longer uses the name "Microsoft Office" for the Windows version. The name is simply "Office" or "Office 365". I'm not making this up. Microsoft did, whether you like it or not. And this page is not just about the current version of the products anyway. It's about the history of the product line, and we want to be consistent. And maybe it's confusing, but it's not Wikipedia's role to override companies in how they choose to name their products (and that's what makes your sources other than Microsoft irrelevant). Accordingly, I'm making the following changes to the page. First info box title: "Windows version"; second info box title: "Mac version". This is undeniably accurate. It completely avoids the problem of using names that are not correct. And I changed the first sentence to also be more accurate with respect to the current name.
- There are so many, many other things on this page that are incredibly out of date. How about letting this go and working on the other stuff?
- RoyLeban (talk) 06:02, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- "Let me see if I understand you. You just said Microsoft doesn't use the name "Microsoft Office for Mac". We agree on that! Thanks for making that clear." I did not fucking say that, stop putting words in my mouth. See https://www.office.com/, saying the 'Microsoft' part of 'Microsoft Office' is unnecessary because of the big Microsoft logo at the top of the page, but the tab title still says "Office 365 Login | Microsoft Office". Not that it even matters what Microsoft says on the matter, because Wikipedia doesn't decide names based on how official they are, but on how commonly used they are (see WP:COMMONNAME). "There are so many, many other things on this page that are incredibly out of date. How about letting this go and working on the other stuff?" Nice goalpost moving. All the sources I listed above should've showed you that 'Microsoft Office for Mac', or at the very least 'Office for Mac', is the common name for the Mac version of Office. Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office for Mac are two distinct products with different features, it's not just a port of the Windows version. --Sek-2 (talk) 11:57, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- First, I am reporting you for swearing at me. That is not civil behavior. Second, I quote you directly:
- Straight from Microsoft's Office.com website, with the sentence "Welcome to the new Office for Mac!" written in big, bold letters. "Office for Mac" is the official name for the Mac version of Office, case closed.
- That is certainly not putting words in your mouth, a false accusation which also merits being reported. Third, anybody can clearly see that your "proof" does NOT use the name "Microsoft Office for Mac", the name you claim is correct. You claim that these names are the correct names but you have no proof of that, just a few current articles that use that particular name. We can find many other articles that use other names names such as "Mac Office" and "Office for Mac" as well as just "Office", "Office 365", etc. For example, searching for "Mac Office" yields this page which proves the name is Office 2019 for Mac (along with Office 2019 for Windows). And this page which proves the name is Microsoft Mac Office. Of course, none of those pages, or yours, proves anything. this page on Microsoft's site makes it pretty clear that "for Mac" and "for PC" are not part of the name.
- You can't point to a page that says the names you happen to like are the correct names today, can you? "Common name" doesn't mean what Sek-2 thinks it is. You arbitrarily reject, without explanation my attempt at a compromise. Since the names have changed many times over the years, the correct thing to do is to not use the names where it is not necessary. The goal of those two info boxes is to provide a quick summary of the apps for the two primary platforms. Insisting on inaccurate titles obfuscates the purpose. And, as an aside, there really should be a few more boxes for the other apps.
- Your claim that they are two distinct products is provably false. You can't buy them separately (though you could at one time). Even boxed copies such as Office Home and Student 2019 can be installed on either Windows or Mac. All Office apps use the same file format. The feature sets of the Windows and Mac apps are identical, with different UIs. The online apps and the iOS and Android apps all have a subset of features, though they're getting closer. It's not even two apps — it's five, all sold together and running on five platforms (Windows, Mac, web, iOS, Android). They are a single product. (source: microsoft.com).
- You wrote: it's not just a port of the Windows version. Exactly! All of the apps, on all five platforms, are an integral part of the Office family and the Office product.
- I suggest that you ask yourself why is it so important that the info boxes have incorrect names? Do you feel you own these pages and your personal opinion trumps the facts?

- The result of this discussion was merge. Officer781 (talk) 05:32, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
It appears that Microsoft no longer distinguishes between applications on different platforms (desktop, the web, mobile, etc). See [1]. This also applies to Microsoft Outlook, Outlook.com, Outlook on the web and Microsoft Outlook mobile app (see also Talk:Microsoft Outlook#Merger proposal). To be honest, because the branding that Microsoft uses is exactly the same, it is very confusing to have disambiguation lines at the top because Microsoft itself makes no difference. The merged page should have different sections, such as "Desktop apps", "Web apps", "Mobile apps", and so on (instead of three separate pages Microsoft Office, Office on the web and Microsoft Office mobile apps).--Officer781 (talk) 00:52, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Update: I have merged Microsoft Office mobile apps here and it makes sense to merge that first as it only differs based on platforms. Will leave Office on the web for now for discussion. The mobile apps page was also outdated anyway.--Officer781 (talk) 15:24, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- Opinion: Merging the Office on the web article would require some coverage at our Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Powerpoint articles for the respective online apps. I have now introduced the respective sections.--Officer781 (talk) 13:09, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi. As we might have heard, Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac are out of support. Would there be any possible updates for the Timelines of support section of this article? Furthermore, Office 2016 is now onto extended support.129.205.113.241 (talk) 00:10, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Would you like to add a photo of the box for Microsoft Office for Mac on CD-ROM Version 1.0?
I was the program manager for Microsoft Office for Macintosh CD-ROM v 1.0. I still have a box of that original product. If you would like photos for the Wikipedia page, here they are (I just took them).
It might be interesting that this first release called it "The Microsoft Office"; "The" was dropped from future releases.
By the way, the Microsoft Office for Mac CD-ROM, in addition to the four Microsoft applications, contained Hypercard-based computer-based training for the Office apps and a bunch of third party fonts, clip art, and utilities.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Version 13.0 was skipped because of superstition relating to the number thirteen.[13].

In the section "History of Releases", the table for the Mac releases needs to be updated, specifically the "version number" for Office 2019 and Office 2021. The version number for Office 2019 should be 16.17-16.52, and the version number for Office 2021 should be 16.53-16.xx , where xx is >53.
Source for this information is the following: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/office-version-vs-version-number/310bfd96-6eda-4917-a958-b121b2662c06 71.145.237.116 (talk) 06:34, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Not done: A current citation for the section in question is official Microsoft documentation that states that office versions 2016-2021 are all 16.0. Generally speaking I will take that over a random Microsoft agent saying otherwise. Because of these conflicting sources I'd say a consensus is needed here and that an edit request is not the appropriate avenue. —Sirdog (talk) 16:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)- Which citation is that? The only two I see in that table for Mac are #87 and #106, and neither of those state what you are claiming. Furthermore, the version number of "16.0" makes no sense for Office 2019 and Office 2021 for Mac. The table states that Office 2016 for Mac is 15.0-16.16.x. How is it that newer software can have a lower version number than older software (ie. 16.0 < 16.16)? However "random" you felt that individual was, they seemed to provide information that agreed with the current entry for Office 2016 for Mac. If the version number for Office 2016 for Mac went up to 16.16.x, then it makes sense that Office 2019 for Mac would start at 16.17. 71.145.237.116 (talk) 18:36, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
