WP:CITOGEN Mentha sachalinensis as "garden mint"
[edit]The first version of this article, of 1 July 2007, said (incorrectly) "Mentha sachalinensis is known by the common name of garden mint". That statement remained until 19 June 2017, nearly ten years. The Mentha article also contained this error for the same 10 year period.
Prior to 1 July 2007 no books (at least as indexed by Google) contained this error. After that date, several books contained the error. Among them:
- An Experimental Text Book on Phytochemical Analysis and Antimicrobial Activity of Mentha Piperita, Onlinegatha, 20 May 2016
- Florida's Best Herbs and Spices: Native and Exotic Plants Grown for Scent and Flavor, Pineapple Press Inc, 2010
- Textbook of field crops, PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd., 1 May 2015
- Molecular Targets and Therapeutic Uses of Spices: Modern Uses for Ancient Medicine, World Scientific, 2009
- Allotment Gardening For Dummies, John Wiley & Sons, 5 Mar 2010
The descriptions of Mentha sachalinensis as "garden mint" in these books is likely to be taken from wikipedia, ie WP:Circular. Batternut (talk) 22:34, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, a nice illustration of how Wikipedia can propagate errors if we don't forcefully insist on reliable sources being given. Peter coxhead (talk) 13:19, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]Almost all recent sources (WCSP, PoWO, GBIF, GRIN, Tropicos, etc.) give Mentha sachalinensis or its synonym Mentha arvensis var. sachalinensis as included in Mentha canadensis. I think this article should be merged there. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:49, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- As no-one commented or objected, I have merged the small amount of distinctive information here into Mentha canadensis. Peter coxhead (talk) 19:43, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
