Newly created page, explanations
[edit]I have set up this page; I added a redirect from menstrual hygiene management (MHM). An alternative option might have been to set up a new page called menstrual hygiene management, but I decided to do it this way - the menstrual hygiene day is a day to raise awareness for better menstrual hygiene management. If the page grows a lot in future, it could be split in two. But for now, I think the two topics go nicely hand in hand together. Feedback, comments and further improvements are welcome. taboos
[edit]Thanks for setting this up and getting the discussion going, EvM! I am writing to query the evidential foundation of the claim that "In the Jhabua district, the belief is that 'menstruation is a disease and not a biological process'" . I traced the quote to a direct link http://www.hindustantimes.com/bhopal/the-periodic-misogyny-of-tribal-madhya-pradesh/article1-1353107.aspx where the origin of the claim is not strongly substantiated. In fact the context implies that the writer may have inferred the belief from behaviour. To say that "the belief is..." is itself a vague statement - is this an explicit, overt, commonly-shared belief, or an implicit belief manifested through behaviour? If the latter, it could be equally claimed for 'developed' societies such as European city-dwellers. I suggest we find a stronger piece of supporting evidence if this claim is to be included. Incidentally, the following article illustrates a more direct way to attack menstrual taboo than by giving out disposable napkins: http://www.hindustantimes.com/wellness/respect-woman-runs-marathon-without-tampon-breaks-taboos/article1-1377623.aspx ZanGran (talk) 12:43, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, ZanGran and welcome to Wikipedia! Yes, it could well be that this was not quoted correctly. Please improve it and add additional sources if you have any. You might also find this related discussion useful here and here. This thing about taboos, and the extend of taboos also in "Western, modern" cultures still needs to be explored and written up better. EvM-Susana (talk) 13:40, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Shorten the background section or move to other article?
[edit]I think the background section might be too lengthy at present. Should it perhaps be compressed and the content be moved to either an existing article or to a new article? There are two articles that are highly overlapping in my opinion and should be merged: Menstrual taboos and Culture and menstruation. If that is done then some of the content that is currently under "background" could be moved to there. I think here we should perhaps focus more on the Day itself (see World Toilet Day for comparison; we used to have a lengthy section on the sanitation crisis in there but culled it). Moved content from here to new Menstrual hygiene management
[edit]I have moved a chunk of content from this article to the newly created article on Menstrual hygiene management, so that this article here can be more focused on that Day itself (28 May). EMsmile (talk) 04:58, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
