Meccano Magazine index
[edit]The change implemented in March 2009 is questionable: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Meccano_Magazine&diff=279532071&oldid=271458005 I'm not sure whether the issue here is wp:npov or wp:conflict, but it seems odd that a new link has been anonymously inserted as the "primary" index to Meccano Magazines. The history here is that the Meccano Magazines were scanned over several years as a joint venture by many Meccano enthusiasts for the benefit of the hobby, on the understanding that they would be sold "at cost". Two years ago they were released by MW Mail Order, for a total cost of GBP165 on CD. Many objections were made as to the exceptional profiteering that seemed to be going on. For two years a group of us have been working in the background trying to get the Magazine scans available on the internet for everyone to read without cost, and we finally succeeded at the beginning of this year. Tim Edwards had compiled an index to the Meccano Magazine articles and his permission was asked to use this index in making the magazines available. He refused, stating that he would like to use the index himself, "in the next few years", or "in a few months" (the timescale varied) and that he would like his page to be the only one using the data. So, a group of a couple of dozen Meccanomen decided to create a new index that would not be enucumbered by such copyright issues and would be freely available to anyone. The Meccano Magazine viewer at www.nzmeccano.com/MMviewer.php was announced publicly and made available on 14th January 2009. In response, Tim Edwards rushed out his version of the index, announced on 10th February. I'm very pleased that as the result of lots of work and pressure, we now have two places on the Internet where the Meccano Magazines can be searched (up from zero in 2008). However, inserting the other Meccano Magazine index at the top of the list as "the primary index" looks more like sour grapes than Wikipedia editing (or is this the same thing ;-)) In terms of precendence it came into existence almost four weeks later, only as a result of the first index at www.nzmeccano.com/MMviewer.php. In terms of popularity it shows under 3000 visits according to its built-in counter, compared with 173,963 searches recorded to date on the nzmeccano.com viewer. In terms of accuracy the comparison is moot -- both have been created by well-meaning enthusiasts, and both generally return similar information (although each one can return articles that the other doesn't find). The meccanoindex site is considerably more complex to use, and doesn't allow english language searching, nor does it allow the user to generate new indexes for future users. I would be interested to know in what way it's supposed to be "primary", and whether there is an undisclosed conflict of interest on the editor. You know already that I am the webmaster of www.nzmeccano.com, a non-commercial site containing no advertising of any kind. Tillsbury (talk) 01:38, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
