I added two categories that were reverted indicating this is a film about a pedophile. It was reverted because there isn't a source in the text for this. I don't usually edit film wikis, so sorry if I'm unfamiliar with etiquette, but if a film is about a person who began a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old when they 34, does there need to be a source explicitly labeling that pedophilia for the category to be added? Thanks. CarmenEsparzaAmoux (talk) 22:45, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just because the story is loosely based on Mary Kay Letourneau, we do not know if the ages are the exact same in the film. Not until a source (or the film releases) is provided for verification. Sources provided in article say nothing about exact ages. Mike Allen 22:59, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this source from Variety does explicitly state the ages. Mike Allen 23:01, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So what does that mean? It’s ok to add those categories? CarmenEsparzaAmoux (talk) 07:55, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Child sexual abuse sure, but not pedophilia, which is "a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children", unless you can point to a source that says the film portrays such a character. As that article says, "child sexual abuse offenders are not pedophiles unless they have a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children". Ok, that makes sense. I'll add now. CarmenEsparzaAmoux (talk) 18:16, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I propose removing the category, "films about child sexual abuse" as the only discussion of the sexual activity in the script is of the woman insisting the boy "was the aggressor" and "was in complete control," claims which he does not deny. This is clear evidence that the encounter was a rape on his part. There are many examples and prosecutions of under-age males raping adult women. The fact that this encounter led to a legitimate adult relationship later should have no bearing or relevance on the specific circumstances when the encounter occurred. Because that event is not depicted in the film (except as Portman's character imagines it), the definition remains unclear, and should not be considered "child sexual abuse" or "rape" and is best, inconclusive.Joey.J (talk) 15:51, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The movie is about a 36-year old having sex with a 13-year-old. It actually doesn't matter if the older party makes claims against the younger party being the aggressor. Maikel (talk) 21:47, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Genre

[edit]

Should this be categorized as solely a drama movie? Netflix Tudum has said that it's both a drama and a comedy. Multiple outlets and film critics have called it a dark comedy of some sort too. Cast members, directors, and screenwriters of the movie have talked less or more about the comedic aspects and humors of the movies too. And given the nomination of the film at Golden Globe in comedy/musical categories, I think this matter deserves some discussion 165.225.242.246 (talk) 00:47, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have made the necessary correction. Brusquedandelion (talk) 07:40, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This entry is missing extremely important criticism by Vili Fualaau on how it ripped off his difficult life. 73.35.110.233 (talk) 16:50, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
