mistranslation

[edit]

Two al-Ahram articles refer to Marwan Habash as a member of the 'national leadership'. This is a sloppy translation form Arabic. In this context it means that he is/was part of the pro-Iraqi Baath Party in Syria. When the Baath Party split in two separate Syrian- and Iraq-led parties, the Iraq-led party inside Syria became referred to as 'National Leadership' (القيادة القومية, in the sense that it adhered to the pre-split National Command based in Iraq) to differentiate it from the main Baathist group in Syria. --Soman (talk) 18:31, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification Soman. I will see if we can find reliable sources that discuss this so we can add a footnote about it. Or else we can simply remove the reference altogether. Tiamuttalk 20:48, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I moved the ref up. However it would be good if more detail on the Iraqi Baath Party in Syria could be added to the Baath Party article. Not sure if I can cough up a decent reference for that at this point. --Soman (talk) 22:42, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
