"He was the first comic writer in the Netherlands and has had a great influence by introducing new words and expressions into the Dutch language." First as in most outstanding, the one thought to have been of the greatest importance, CERTAINLY. First as in the one who did what nobody had done before, NO WAY.

(Check http://www.lambiek.net/dutchcomics/index.htm a great information source on the makers of comics and the Dutch hisory of the art form) Theodore W. 22:16, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Who cares that he dies in his sleep? That is not notable and not worth mentioning. Andries 21:20, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The words 'Literary' and 'literature' do not have the same high status as the word 'literatuur' in the Netherlands. Like Marten Toonder said himself: in the English language a vacuumcleaner manual is also considered literature. I don't know how you should translate winning the literary prizes etc. [Herman]

The list of titles could use the services of a literary translator. Many of those translations do not even hint at the style and the subtlety of the originals. --Radioflux 20:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You mean things like "Bumble-thing vs. Bomb alert"? Shinobu 00:51, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Clarification to previous post: If my memory serves me correctly Een bommelding doesn't actually contain any mention of bombs, but that was not the point. Perhaps I should have mentioned "Als u mij wilt verschonen", as this is a better example. Still don't see how a more literal translation, if possible, will fix this, however. The English translations of the titles here seem questionable, anyone fluent who can take a look? Gnomingstuff (talk) 21:19, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
