IMDB

The only source for this article is IMDB, and there are some rather surprising points there, e.g. writing jokes for Clinton. I think we need better sources for that. --Slashme (talk) 12:08, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Mark,

After your assurance we have two sources: IMDB and the subject of the article. IMDB is a source of marginal quality, and you are a primary source. Surely you will have access to better quality sources, for example newspaper and magazine articles, and maybe some books?

I know it sounds really weird for us to say that we don't accept the person's own word about themselves, but imagine if we allowed Donald Trump to act as a source for his article. Notability

Hello David. You deleted most of the content from the "Mark Jonathan Davis" Wikipedia page, stating it was "Not independently notable. All the references are about the Richard Cheese character."

But that isn't accurate. The original page clearly documented numerous examples of Davis as an established American actor performing under his own name. You can see his numerous credits as Mark Jonathan Davis on IMDB.com [ https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0205104/ ] as a voice-over actor in many Warner Brothers Cartoons, and he appeared on many TV shows as himself, including The Late Show with David Letterman, NBC's Friday Night, and Newsradio. Davis created numerous popular parody songs that aired on The Dr. Demento Show including "The Star Wars Cantina" and "Jeannie's Diner". Davis is also a published author.

I am not a Wikipedia expert, so I'm not sure what you mean. It is not my intention to intrude or bother anyone. I am just a fan of Richard Cheese. I don't understand your rationale; you said "All the references are about the Richard Cheese character" but if you read what was on the page, it was not all about Richard Cheese. As I explained, Mark Jonathan Davis is an actor and has an entire career separate from Richard Cheese; how is that not "notable"? The Mark Jonathan Davis page has been on Wikipedia for years. Why remove it now? Again, I am not a Wikipedia expert; I'd appreciate it if you could explain this more clearly. For a topic to be notable, it has to be discussed at length in multiple independent reliable secondary sources. In this case, we have the following sources:

• Stapleton, Susan (3 February 2015). "Cheese whiz Richard Cheese slices two sets in Las Vegas". Los Angeles Times. Retrieved 20 August 2017. - this just says that he's playing two gigs at Club Madrid. Not in-depth reporting.
• Fraser, Trevor (4 February 2017). "Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine at Disney Springs". Orlando Sentinel. Retrieved 20 August 2017. - Just mentions that MJD is behind the stage name.
• Cotner, David (18 February 2017). "Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine". LA Weekly. Retrieved 20 August 2017. - dead link, archive here. Says that it's MJD's "nom de fromage".
• Tilles, Jay (24 March 2016). "How a Richard Cheese Song Made it into 'Batman V Superman'". radio.com. Retrieved 20 August 2017. - as the title would imply, it's about how a Richard Cheese song was used in the Batman versus Superman movie.

All of them primarily discuss the Richard Cheese character and just mention MJD. None of them show that he's independently notable. Not everyone who appears on a talk show is notable, and not every author is notable. --Slashme (talk) 21:14, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Carrie,

Nobody actually owns an article on Wikipedia. We try to build consensus, based on our policies. If you want to show that MJD is notable by Wikipedia standards independently of his work as Richard Cheese, you need to find the sources first. Normally you'd just add them to the article; here's a good description of how to do it: Help:Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor/1. In this case, however, because it's been going back and forth a bit, I'd recommend that you list the sources here on this talk page and then ask those of us who have been discussing the topic to take a look. I'd recommend that you make a username so that it's easier to communicate, but whether or not you do that, if you want to attract someone's attention to your comment, you can tag them. For example, to tag me, you would type {{u|slashme}} and then sign your comment at the end by typing --~~~~ (which you should always do on talk pages anyway). --Slashme (talk) 07:03, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
