At the bottom of the history section it is written "By 1979, the State Street commercial corridor had lost its commercial vitality and was closed to street traffic for renovation including sidewalk widening until 1996." State street was closed to street traffic in 1979 to create a pedestrian mall hoping that it would bring back shoppers to the area during the era of suburbanisation. This plan did not work and the city reopened State Street to traffic in 1996.
