Art Paul Schlosser

People listed as Famous Madisonians should be people who folks who don't know much, if anything, about Madison may have heard of. I am unconvinced that Art Paul Schlosser is one of these people. Unless I hear any convincing evidence to the contrary, I'm going to take him off the list of Famous Madisonians. Splitting proposal

I propose that sections Madison Police Department and Madison Fire Department be split into a separate page called Emergency Services in Madison, Wisconsin. Hi Thefactmanirud. The issues which may prevent this article from achieving GA status has (respectfully) less to do with its length and more to do with what is contributing to that length. Its content. Yes, perhaps the content on the police force could be split out, but the issue with the "geography" section is not the architecture content, but the "neighborhoods" content. Which is choc full of "real estate brochure" bumf and has next to no references to support the editorial and commentary on which are "bohemian" or "affluent" or similar. Personally I would focus on those areas before affording the section covering the fire department (a section with all of 3 sentences) its own article. Guliolopez (talk) 20:01, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

I will be taking on the review for this city. It seems that there are an alarming amount of issues present such as citation needed tags. Unfortunately, there is plenty of unsourced and choppy areas of the article. As a result of the citation issues and structure of the article, I am closing the review as a Immediate ✗ Fail. Feel free to nominate this in the future, but honestly, this was a very premature nomination. Please read the GA criteria before nominating. City Nomenclature

The city was named after James Madison, as described in the intro paragraph, but the important historic truth of Madison’s identity is intentionally obfuscated and hidden by those trying to perpetuate the white supremacist narrative of American history here. James Madison was a Virginia plantation owner and the owner of over 100 enslaved people. The fact that he served as American President and as coauthor of the Constitution should not diminish his role in perpetuating slavery in the United States, both as owner of enslaved people and as author of the 3/5ths Compromise, which stated that an enslaved African person is legally considered property and only valued at 3/5ths of the value of a white resident.

The identity of James Madison, of whom the city of Madison was named for, should be described fairly and accurately as “president, founding father and slave owner”.

Madison is not notable for his slave ownership, he is notable for being a politician. Readers can visit James Madison's Wikipedia article for specific details of his life. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:05, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

What/who determines what is notable or not? Certainly his slave ownership does not fit the narrative of white supremacist patriarchal hero-worshipping version of history that has categorically downplayed the injustices and shortcomings of past white American leaders. But you’re playing right into the prejudice-laced propaganda that is continually perpetuated by whitewashing these integral details and only looking at those like Madison with rosy colored glasses.

Owning slaves was the norm for someone of his race and class at the time, therefore it doesn't need to be brought up at every mention of him. That's not "racist", it's just not mentioning something that could be taken as a given. - Sumanuil (talk) 22:03, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

@Maximilian77: For years I have fretted over the Wikipedia article Harding County, New Mexico, because it is named after none other than Warren G. Harding, a man famous (and I mean FAMOUS) for his extra-marital affairs. Cheating on your spouse is just plain wrong, don't you agree? And many times I have wanted to edit that darned Harding County article and change, "The county is named for United States President Warren G. Harding", to "The county is named for United States President and noted philanderer Warren G. Harding", but I have resisted the urge for a few reasons. First, Harding isn't notable for his infidelity; he's notable for having served as president of the United States. As well, Wikipedia editors have agreed by consensus that articles should not give undue weight to peripheral viewpoints ("noted golfer Donald Trump" would be undue weight (and just crazy!)) Finally, Wikipedia editors have agreed that Wikipedia is not a soapbox for personal opinions, which so far has been the only reason you have provided for including "slave owner". So my friend, no matter how much I disapprove of Harding's adulterous lifestyle, it would be a heap of sloppy editing if I were to include mention of it at Harding County, Hew Mexico. Livability Rankings

Should Madison's place in livability rankings be included in the lead? Madison typically does well on those, and I felt including it would make sense given that articles for other cities, such as Boston and Calgary, also do. Hoocąk name for the city

I would like to update the introduction to give the city's names in a style more like other cities with names that differ in different languages, like Lagos, by giving the English name and the Hoocąk name, Teejop, in parentheses with a pronunciation guide. As part of this edit I'd like to adjust the references, and either remove "Dejope" and "Taychopera" entirely from the article, or move them elsewhere where it can be explained that those are both Anglicizations of the actual Hoocąk name.
