Featured artists counted / not counted
[edit]The "most wins" source shows that MTV never counted featured artists... until 2014 when they reported I Azalea as the artist with the second most nominations, most of them coming from "Problem" (Ariana G feat I Azalea). Then, in 2015 they didn't count featured artists, as they announced Taylor Swift as the artist with the most nominations, when Kendrick Lamar–thanks to "Bad Blood" and his own videos–was the most mentioned in the list. 2016 and 2017 is not clear. This year, they counted featured artists. CC: @Andresg770:. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 06:41, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- Then Rihanna should only be listed as a 5-time winner, no? "Live Your Life" won in 2009, and "This Is What You Came For" won in 2016. She was listed as a 6-time winner before I edited, hence my question. Andresg770 (talk) 07:01, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- In 2009 MTV didn't count featured acts, in 2016 Billboard counted them as nominees. It should be explained with a note, because a normal reader (or fan) will be asking by this one yes and that one not. It's lowkey messy. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 07:09, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- Ugh, this would all be fixed easily if MTV brought back that "Biggest Winners" webpage they used to have. But considering that they still haven't even re-added all the nominations to the individual VMA pages in the archive, I'm not hopeful that's happening anytime soon... – For consistency with other articles, the official name of the event is MTV Video Music Awards (plural), not MTV Video Music Award (singular, without s). This RM needs to be apply for MTV Europe Music Award and MTV Pilipinas Music Award, which the official name of event is MTV Europe Music Awards and MTV Pilipinas Music Awards as per all MTV regional music awards ceremony that has a plural name instead singular (MTV African Music Awards, MTV Asian Awards, etc). 110.137.186.235 (talk) 08:42, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose renaming the individual awards. If this is for consistency with other articles, much like Academy Award for Best Picture and the like, "Award" should still be singular in those cases. Will only support changing MTV Video Music Award to plural like Academy Awards. Zzyzx11 (talk) 10:23, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Zzyzx11:: I tell that you not only MTV VMA use plural for awarding ceremony, MTV EMA officially use plural name as well in their EMA website, all sources, etc, same as now-defunct MTV Pilipinas Music Awards apart from individual categories. 110.137.186.235 (talk) 09:48, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- Those two other pages were added to the list after I made my original comment.[1] It still stands that the individual ones should remain singular like Academy Award for Best Picture, and I will only support to rename the ceremonies to plural like Academy Awards. - Support award ceremony, oppose individual awards - The ceremony should be plural as is consistent with other articles, while the individual awards should stay as is. --Gonnym (talk) 14:59, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- Support award ceremony, oppose individual ones. My opinion is the same as in the comments above. GagaNutellatalk 19:34, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- Support renaming award ceremony, oppose renaming individual categories. Same reasons as the ones given above (though I do appreciate the irony that the reason why the name of this article was changed to the singular in the first place was exactly the same: to keep consistency with other award article titles that had also been changed that way). Andresg770 (talk) 01:39, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- Support moving award ceremony only I'm so surprised to see that from any MTV Music Awards articles, MTV VMA, EMA, and Pilipinas Awards are three articles that using singular instead plural name. Because plural name is the official name for all awarding ceremonies and all reliable sources use plural name (with s), Three articles should be moved to all plural names. In regards to all individual nomination categories, a singular name should be stay as present. 182.1.25.238 (talk) 09:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- Support award ceremony moves, oppose individual award moves: agree with @182.1.25.238 completely. Doggy54321 (talk) 13:04, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

History of naming choice?
[edit]Does anyone know the history or origin of the naming? Given the awards go to music videos, why was it not named the MTV Music Video Awards? Presumably there was some reason why MTV VMAs was chosen over MTV MVAs, but I cannot find any citations or commentary on the creation of this award show. Thelen Shar (talk) 07:38, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- I sadly don't have any sources I could share with you. However, one thing I do remember is that in its early years (i.e., the 1980s), MTV used to promote itself as "the first 24-hour video music channel," as you can see in this 1981 promo where they not only use that tagline but also talk about a "video music party": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPnLbCYJ9Y8
- My best guess is that the VMAs (which began shortly after in 1984) were named as such in reference to MTV's "video music" branding -- and while this reference needed no explanation to MTV viewers in the '80s, it got lost over time while the VMA name stuck. So, I don't know if you'll find any sources about the name of the VMAs per se, but you might have better luck finding why MTV used "video music" in its marketing back then (perhaps from a book about the history of MTV). Hope this helps! Andresg770 (talk) 19:35, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

[edit]There are discussion currently underway at Files for Discussion to purge notable award ceremony images from the project. Specifically:
- Will Smith slaps Chris Rock
- Janet Jackson and Justing Timberlake's wardrobe malfunction
- Kanye West grabs the mic at VMA 2009.
Comments encouraged. Feoffer (talk) 21:40, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
