- With the design and implementation of the Riis Plaza, the landscape model for low income housing was permanently altered. The model of the plaza was applicable to all urban high rise housing. The general structure and design of the model facilitated new and unique interaction opportunities between community members and residents. Lawns were no longer fenced off and inaccessible to people and space was redefined in relationship to the needs and desires of the community and resident population (“M. Paul Friedberg, FASLA”).
- Using Riis Plaza as a starting point, Friedberg continued to develop new forms of play equipment, “which made the traditional swing/slide and seesaw obsolete.” He conceived of playgrounds as total design environments and dedicated those works to the issue of inter-connected play and performance. Friedberg forever changed the idea of recreational facilities. Based on the environmental designs that were developed a company called Timberform was created with Paul as the head designer (“M. Paul Friedberg, FASLA”).
- After his work in revolutionizing playground design, Friedberg began to look at the city as a whole. He worked in major downtown areas and created the concept known as the park plaza. A park plaza is an urban space that usually has a large water body as a pool which can be easily drained if a celebration or other type of event is to take place there. Surrounding areas are terraced and planted with flowers and trees thereby intermixing the idea of park and plaza (“M. Paul Friedberg, FASLA”).
- In 1970, Friedberg started the first undergraduate landscape architectural program in a major city at The City College of New York. He has been the director of the program for twenty years. Paul has authored the books “Play and Inter-Play” and “The Handcrafted Playgrounds” and “Playground for City Children.” In April of 1983 Friedberg earned his doctorate in law from Ball State University (M. Paul Friedberg, FASLA”).
- M. Paul Friedberg has been working since he graduated college to represent those who would not be recognized by other designers. He has changed the lives for the poor and impoverished living in otherwise drab housing projects all over the country. Without Friedberg, the people of low income housing and the surrounding communities would have no landscape design whatsoever, they would not be able to enjoy their outdoors or feel the connection to one another Friedberg sought to establish for them. He is a good man who had done many good things for people throughout the world.
- This revolutionary landscape architect has won over 85 national and international awards for design throughout his career, and from the organizations that bestowed the awards upon him, they are the highest that they convey. He has received such notable awards as the AIA Medal from the American Institute of Architects for an allied professional, and in 2004 he received the ASLA Design Medal which recognizes an individual landscape architect who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for a period of at least ten years (M. Paul Friedberg, FASLA”).

Fair use rationale for Image:Mpaulfriedberg.gif
[edit]Image:Mpaulfriedberg.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
