Yes, and what else? Is this considered a weed throughout (continental) Europe since it's found on some lists of invasive species?
BC aboriginal used it
[edit]According to (Turner, Nancy J. Food Plants of Interior First Peoples (Victoria: UBC Press, 1997) ISBN 0-7748-0606-0) some aboriginal people dug up the rhizomes in early spring and there's no mention of it only being a starvation food or otherwise not normally eaten. Temperature regulation
[edit]There's great material on skunk cabbage natural history on the Minnehaha_Park_(Minneapolis) page that ought to be here instead of there, e.g. this:
"By consuming carbohydrates stored in its fleshy roots, skunk cabbages can maintain a temperature inside the spathe that is 15–35 degrees warmer than the surrounding air temperature."
A basic and fascinating skunk cabbage fact that I found neither here nor on the general _Lysichiton_ page. Jar354 (talk) 00:56, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
- That's because it does not apply to Lysichiton species, only to Symplocarpus species, as the article actually says. It's an absolutely classic case of the way in which common names are misleading. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:25, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
