Strongest amateur

[edit]

It seems from my research that McShane is now a chess columnist for The Spectator and no longer works in finance. Is it still fair to call him an amateur now that his main profession is chess-related? Most of Hikaru Nakamura’s income these days probably comes from Twitch streaming and some other top players make most of their income from teaching chess, so I don’t see why those are categorically different than writing about chess.
