[edit]I added a link to a page with some brief excerpts from Büchner's book, Force and Matter. I would certainly like to find a link to a complete edition of that book.

Why "extreme" ?!
[edit]In the text (07.03.2011):
"The extreme materialism of this work excited so much opposition that he was compelled to give up his post at Tübingen."
I mean: The cause of the end of his academical career was not so much his extreme materialism, but simply his open materialism, which was publicly known and even amplified by his bestseller.
"extreme" is in this context only a subjective judgment, which depends from the point of view of the philosophical reviewer.
But as history goes, the conflict was not between "extreme" and "moderate" materialism, but of materialism against spiritualism and theology (similar in many accounts to the conflict nowadays between Darwinism and creationism).
