Image Gallery
[edit]I note somebody has put a note on top of the Gallery saying Wikipedia "discourages" galleries. It took me hours to upload all of those photos and work out how to put a gallery in (the instructions which I got were from Wikipedia), almost as long as it took me to research the history of the place, but more importantly Wikipedia's policy says:
- "The images in the gallery collectively must have encyclopedic value and add to the reader's understanding of the subject."
==> All of these photos allow people to learn much more about the topic and given that it's about a luxury hotel these aesthetic things are very relevant. As there are so few photos on the Lough Rynn website of the gardens themselves, people will be particularly interested in seeing the place.
- "Images in a gallery should be suitably captioned to explain their relevance both to the article subject and to the theme of the gallery, and the gallery should be appropriately titled (unless the theme of the gallery is clear from the context of the article)."
==> I think I have done this.
- "Images in a gallery should be carefully selected, avoiding similar or repetitive images, unless a point of contrast or comparison is being made. Just as we seek to ensure that the prose of an article is clear, precise and engaging, galleries should be similarly well-crafted. See 1750–1795 in fashion for an example of a good use of galleries."
==> With perhaps the exception of one photo (of the red bridge) all of these photos show different parts of the estate. For me, the gallery will add hugely to people's knowledge of the subject matter. For the above reasons I believe it should be maintained. Dáibhí Ó Bruadair (talk) 14:49, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- I agree the images in the gallery are beneficial to the community, but my understanding of the guidelines specified in WP:Galleries is that this gallery is more appropriate for the Wikimedia Commons (in this case a link to the gallery could still be provided on this page via the {{Commons}} template). The key line in WP:Galleries is as follows: "One rule of thumb to consider: if, due to its content, such a gallery would only lend itself to a title along the lines of "Gallery" or "Images of [insert article title]", as opposed to a more descriptive title, the gallery should either be revamped or moved to the Commons." To address the specific points delineated above:
- The article would remain image-rich even without an in-article gallery, and as such the gallery is not immediately relevant.
- The fact that the castle is currently a luxury hotel does not change this as it is not the role of Wikipedia to promote any cause, commercial or otherwise (see WP:NOTPROMOTION and WP:NOTTRAVEL). Wikitravel may be better suited for such endeavors. The pictures of the gardens that are in the actual gardens section should suffice for the average user.
- Both the gallery's title and many of the individual image captions are generic or repetitive enough that it is not always clear what additional information the average user would gain from their presence.
- Several of the photos are somewhat repetitive, documenting only minor variations of the same section of the castle grounds and being identified, as noted in the previous point, by identical captions.
- The article would remain image-rich even without an in-article gallery, and as such the gallery is not immediately relevant.
- For these reasons it is my opinion that the photos in the photo gallery section are more appropriate for the Commons. scisdahl (t•c) 19:30, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Related issue: Until a few more editors have a chance to weigh in so as to form a consensus on the issue above, I would like to format the photo gallery section with the {{Gallery}} template, but File:Lough Rynn Walled Garden2.JPG and File:Lough Rynn shoreline.JPG did not render properly in the preview so I didn't save the changes. If anyone could help troubleshoot this problem, that'd be great. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scisdahl (talk • contribs) 19:27, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
