Actual records?

A lot of the things listed here are statements that are not relevant to jackpot records at all. For instance "The Irish National Lottery has a guaranteed jackpot of €2 million for each of its twice-weekly Lotto draws." What does this have to do with anything? There are several other statements like this. Why are things subdivided on this page between the US and Europe? That's fine, but the top subdivisions should be things like the biggest jackpot won by one person, the biggest period (whether shared or not), the biggest taken as an annuity, the biggest taken at once, etc. Then within those if you want to list the US (and perhaps individual states), Europe (and perhaps individual countries), Asia, etc. that seems like the best way. 70.189.220.24 (talk) 23:07, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

A lot of the claims in this article are unsourced and hence unverifiable, and some have been sitorted by possible recent vandalism by IP accounts (see history) who are known to have vandalised other articles. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:26, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Wrong Date Format

Why are all the US dates using British date format? Should be month day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.126.106.149 (talkcontribs) 09:25, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

How European lotteries are taxed

The European section mentions that lotteries are taxed in 'other ways'. Can this be clarified or expanded? Bob Carlson (talk) 18:18, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

$ 2.4 billion is the biggest payout

http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/21/news/spain-lottery-el-gordo-2-billion/ prokaryotes (talk) 16:50, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

That's total prise payouts, not the jackpot. from the linked article: "The top prize is capped at 4 million euros ($4.36 million)". No, the record is not $2.4 Billion. oknazevad (talk) 16:58, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok, i thought it might be an interesting fact nevertheless. prokaryotes (talk) 17:39, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

list in chronological order please

(1) you better do the list in chronological order because you can sort the individual columns anyway! Let say sort on jackpot cash value , click and you have the result. So the first Colum can be erased "rank". (2) now (current) You have to fit in a new entry & rename all the rank numbers under that new entry! not good (3) the list according to the official websites is incomplete! see Powerball & mega millions. geertes62 27/06/16. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geertes62 (talkcontribs) 21:59, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Not a bad idea to make it a sortable table. I'll take care of that. oknazevad (talk) 23:07, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
@Oknazevad: Please don't edit the list until there is more consensus. Thanks, 15zulu (talk) 23:17, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict)While it may be easier to add an entry if the list is chronological, such an order doesn't make sense for a records list. Records are listed in order of best – fastest, top score, highest amount, etc. If you want to see the results chronologically, then click on the date column. But most people viewing this page, want to see the highest lottery jackpots first, and that's why that is the default view. 15zulu (talk) 23:16, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. Just as long as it's sortable, it doesn't really matter what the default is, but as a list of records, largest first makes sense. Of course, I said it should be sortable, went to the article, and saw it was already sortable, so I don't know exactly what Geertes was asking for. oknazevad (talk) 00:59, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

post-taxes results

the money the winners really get in the pocket/wallet....
the cash prizes are taxed in the us. Federal 25%!!!! and lots of states tax the lottery win as well!!!! I find a website you can see what the prize the winners get, so minus the federal & state tax. that gives you a better idea instead of the stupid "sum of the payments annuity".... I checqed it out and the record holder for the biggest prize is still Gloria Mackenzie, not the winner of july 08 2016 (as stated in the list) top 5: Nr1=18may13=278mil Nr2=7july16=272mil Nr3/4/5=13jan16=246mil Nr6=7may16=190mil Nr7=19feb14=182mil and so on.... the website https://www.usamega.com/powerball-jackpot.asp geertes62 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geertes62 (talkcontribs) 21:47, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

Actually U.S. federal tax can be as high as 39.6% in 2016. Automatic withholding are 25%, but that's not the end of your tax responsibility. Regardless, federal and state tax rates vary from year to year and from person to person. Also, some areas of local income tax, which usamega.com ignores. We can try to guess what the person really took home, but that's against Wikipedia policy – WP:OR. usamega.com is an unofficial site who are not tax experts. We have no idea of what each winners actual taxes looked like and there is no reliable source for the information you're asking for. 15zulu (talk) 23:58, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
@Oknazevad: I've re-added the section since I believe Geertes62 is requesting something readers are interest in. If I understand her/him correctly, s/he is asking is to include a column for post-tax amount in the U.S. jackpots table. This is certainly something readers are interested in, though something we're unlikely to get. 15zulu (talk) 23:58, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough. You're more patient than me in interpreting the post. That said, I agree that the post-tax amount is unlikely to be available, especially with varying tax rates across the life of an annuity jackpot. So while a reasonable request, there's not much we can do to add it. oknazevad (talk) 00:24, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Widen Date Column

Small thing, could someone make it so that the Date column is wider? Some of the dates are OK and other dates wrap to another line. It would clean up the look if it were made more uniform looking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.171.179.204 (talk) 15:14, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

US data table limited to 60 entries?

Is the table limited to 60 entries? I tried to re-input a lottery win and it won't format correctly in the table. When the TBD Nov 5,2022 drawing was added to the list, this information was deleted from the list: $314.3 $146.0 1 $146.0 Powerball Aug. 25, 2007 IN 71.218.88.71 (talk) 06:46, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

The list includes all jackpots "of $300 million or more (annuity value) with at least one jackpot-winning ticket". As long as the jackpot was more than $300 million, it qualifies. I'll restore the August 2007 Powerball and search for any potential missing entries that fit. Askarion 13:55, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

This is Lottery Jackpot "Records" not Lottery Jackpot "Winners". Maybe a new page listing all the intrusive biographical details could be made of each winner. It's also in a listing fashion of details of the lotteries' record themselves not the actual winners (with one notable exception Jack Whittaker - but his troubles were well publicized). 71.218.82.72 (talk) 03:57, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

europe

somebody added a table "Examples of largest jackpots" i think is not a good idea. This is not a plus for the topic "records" (they already there under in text. who want to know who in the winner? and de jackpot is in the end is split with 70 people ? this more for a local newpaper but not for wikipeadia, isn't it? now anyway i don't erase it, i keep the text always updated. the best for all of You folks. Adjusted for Inflation = Accuracy

The only way to compare jackpots accurately is showing the *Cash Value* adjusted to current-year inflation. (I believe adjusting jackpot/annuity amounts may prove problematic due to variable interest rates, but if not, go for it.) Wiki's "List of Highest Grossing Films" (box-office) page is a good template. Although it lists 2009's "Avatar" as #1 (@ $2.9B USD), it shows the true champion in a separate section adjusted for inflation. There, "Avatar" is #2 @ $3.5B and 1939's "Gone with the Wind" is #1 @ $3.9B, both adjusted to 2021 money. Relative to my suggestion, the lotto page's current #11 cash value is 2012's $474MM (#12 annuity). However, when adjusted to 2023 money, that cash value jumps to $615.2MM, which catapults the rank to #7.

On a separate note, I concur w/ those stating there are too many listed, currently 64. Top 10 is sufficient; beyond 25 borders on irrelevant -- especially considering today's jackpots regularly approach the billion-dollar mark. 2600:1700:2876:7150:21AE:2F3F:3E0:6B44 (talk) 21:23, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

I agree that a new column "2023 value" in USD for jackpot cash amounts would be a good addition. I wonder if there is a Wikipedia bot that can do those conversions and auto-update periodically. If not it'd have to be done manually and the source/formula cited. Still doable and useful though imo.

Spain subsection needs citations

I made several (individual) edits to the Spain subsection (about the Spanish Christmas Lottery). It seems to be @71.218.82.72's baby, so I explained every edit in detail.

Please add citations asap. The info as it stands now is mostly incorrect.

It should all be subsumed into the Europe chart, anyway.

Massmediazealot (talk) 23:32, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Should the whole page just be rewritten?
It is not "my baby" as you put it.
El Gordo has been at the top of the page for years because of the notability of it - the "lotto pool" for awarding prizes is the largest in the world.
You deleted the entire El Gordo section from this page and moved it to Lotteries by country#Spain.
You completely added/copied the table of "examples" from Lotteries by country#Notable prizes, some of them without citations. Please add citations asap of what you copied/moved from there.
As for being subsumed into the Europe chart, I don't know about that. Maybe others will add constructive thoughts about it. 71.218.82.72 (talk) 02:28, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
I don't know why Massmediazealot edited *my comment* putting things I did NOT write into my comment and reformatting my comment into individual sentences. 71.218.82.72 (talk) 05:48, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Stop with the attitude. Your style of writing is unorganized (among other things), so I added links to the pages you were referencing, for other editors who may be reading. I separated 2-3 of your points into individual sentences because I am going to address your points one by one for clarity. I was writing this reply as you submitted your follow-up reply. Please relax.
I called the section your "baby" because you clearly feel ownership over it, and you added it back after I removed it for being messy, out of order, unsubstantiated, and full of irrelevant technical drivel. The winning 5-digit number from the 2011 drawing is completely extraneous information, for example.
"El Gordo" has no business being the name of a top section on an English page about world lottery records. The first prize/jackpot of the lottery is only ~US$4.35m, which makes it undeserving of its own section, especially in the wrong language. The "lotto pool" may be the largest in the world, but the actual first prize/jackpot is not, and that is what the article is about.
I moved the El Gordo info from this page to Lotteries by country#Spain because it is a better fit there.
Yes, some of the info in the European jackpot table that I copied from Lotteries by country#Notable prizes is missing citations. Notice I added the "[citation needed]" template to many. I will add citations as time allows. Other editors can too.
I think the Spanish Christmas Lottery jackpots may not totally belong in the European table given that the €4m top prize/jackpot is so low, as I wrote above. It barely deserves being its own subsection. Other editors should chime in about this lottery's importance (or lack thereof) in the article.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines
"It is not necessary to bring talk pages to publishing standards, so there is no need to correct others' spelling errors, grammar, etc. Doing so can be quite irritating. The basic rule, with exceptions outlined below, is to not edit or delete others' posts without their permission.
Never edit or move someone's comment to change its meaning, even on your own talk page." 71.218.82.72 (talk) 03:10, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
I did not edit your reply to "change its meaning."
You were not following WP:Talk page guidelines#How to use article talk pages (specifically Stay on topic and Be positive)—nor were you following WP:Talk page guidelines#Format standards (specifically "Talk page discussions should be concise")—so, according to WP:Talk page guidelines#Examples of appropriately editing others' comments, I simply sectioned it (with 2-3 simple line breaks) and fixed/attached links, to improve clarity & readability and to reduce your off-topic incivility.
I have to say—out of everything I wrote above about the Spanish lottery, I love how my (rightful) editing of your comment is the only issue you raise in your reply 🤦‍♂️
Now, please stop making this personal. This is not personal. This page is about lottery jackpot records. Drop your attitude. Familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia:Code of conduct, and keep your comments thoughtful and on topic.
Massmediazealot (talk) 07:44, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
Don't edit others comments to "correct" them. I'm not the IP, but they're right. And they point out the guideline stating that explicitly. Jus because you don't think a talk page comment is up to your standards doesnt mean you can change it. Leave other people's words alone. oknazevad (talk) 13:16, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
I did not edit the comment to "correct" him/her. I also did not edit the comment to bring it "up to my standards." According to WP:Talk page guidelines#Examples of appropriately editing others' comments, there are many valid reasons editors can edit other contributors' comments. I simply sectioned his/her comment with 2-3 simple innocent line breaks to improve clarity & readability, and I fixed/attached links to reduce his/her off-topic incivility. I was well within my right. I did not change the meaning nor obscure his/her (malicious) intent.
Now please, let's stop making this personal. This page is about lottery jackpot records and improving it for readers. No attitude necessary. I am attuned to the Wikipedia:Code of conduct. We all should be. Let's keep our comments mature, thoughtful, and on topic please.
Massmediazealot (talk) 16:29, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
'Sectioning' refers to adding new section headers, not what you did. Your edits weren't appropriate per the talk page guidelines. You've been doing this all over this talk page (for example [1], [2], as well as your wholesale deletions of comments) and you should stop. Talk pages are meant to record comments as they were made. I've just repaired the damage. - MrOllie (talk) 17:04, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
None of my edits were "[in]appropriate" or "damag[ing]" in any way.
WP:Talk page guidelines#Examples of appropriately editing others' comments states: "Cautiously editing or removing another editor's comments is 'sometimes' allowed" and "Some reformatting may be necessary to maintain the sense of the discussion."
WP:Refactoring talk pages (also referred to as sectioning) states: redrafting/revising talk pages is useful to "improve the clarity and readability of a page; remove off-topic, uncivil, unclear, or otherwise distracting material; restructure discussions for clarity; and relocate material to different sections or pages where it is more appropriate."
I did not "wholesale delete" any "comments." I see you did not cite these alleged "wholesale deletions" in your reply, unlike the two other edits you cited. I did delete four old, unvouched, irrelevant sections that were outdated by 5-10 years—and two more from the Wikipedia bot @InternetArchiveBot which itself suggests removal of the sections to de-clutter the talk page—but you and @Oknazevad objected so I let them be archived since yall prefer that.
None of my (very minor) edits changed the meaning of anything that was written, nor did they obscure the intent of their original author. I edit thoughtfully (I admit I may be a bit anal), and I edit in good faith. That does not seem to be the case for others here. The fact that you just spent the time going through and "repairing" my harmless edits I must say is troll behavior.
The WP:Talk page guidelines does not say copy editing others' comments is prohibited, just that it is "not necessary." It does not state anywhere that "Talk pages are meant to record comments as they were made," so I'm not sure where you're getting that from. Nor am I sure why yall are so opposed to adding clarity and readability to the page when it has no negative impact. Folks ought to be more thoughtful in their writing. Let's keep our comments mature and thoughtful please.
Massmediazealot (talk) 18:50, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
You have thoroughly misunderstood the talk page guidelines. If you don't believe me (and oknazevad, and the IP) feel free to bring this up at the noticeboard of your choice for further input. But do not 'refactor' a talk page again. Making personal attacks (itself a problem per WP:NPA) is not a substitute for understanding and following community guidelines. MrOllie (talk) 18:57, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
I didn't misunderstand anything. I directly quoted from the articles. Adding minimal clarity and readability to a page, in good faith, with no negative impact, is not prohibited anywhere in the guidelines.
The only ones making personal attacks here are you, @Oknazevad, and @71.218.82.72. Posts that have been on here for 10+ years, ignored, you all of a sudden want to edit, after I reply to them. Stop trolling.
