Reason for creating this article
[edit]I believe Abel is notable as an author, because of the quantity of books he wrote, many of which are still available, including one in full text online; he clearly made an impression on his field and with his peers during his life. I believe he's probably notable as a garden designer because of his work on major sites in and around Vienna. I've translated from the German article, whose referencing is a bit thin, but I don't doubt the accuracy of the sources, which do seem to deal with him in some depth, so my personal view is that we're in a position to write a reasonable article about a notable person - but I'm open to being told I'm wrong! Hope it's all okay... Elemimele (talk) 11:08, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Comments for new page reviewer
[edit]Hi, I moved this article from draft to mainspace not because I wanted to circumvent the AfC process, but because it's been waiting for more than 4 months, and I've been editing for a while now; the teahouse people reckoned that there comes a point where it's reasonable for me to put articles into mainspace myself rather than adding work to the AfC people. I hope this is Okay. I don't know the proper clean-up process for drafts, or anything about the technicalities of adding categories etc. (and obviously I don't have the AfC tool to do the work) so I've probably only done half what ought to be done. I don't think Abel is a massively important person; this was a translation from the German Wikipedia which isn't quite so good on sourcing as we are. But as described above, I think he just about qualifies for his niche. I have no axe to grind about him (I was just picking articles off the list awaiting translation and started at "A") so if you don't think he's notable, I'm not going to throw a wobbly about it. - Have requested deletion as new page patrol doesn't like him. I am certain it would be possible to find references; his publications are on sale still, 120 years after he was active, and he produced a number of gardens and parks that are major national monuments, but I can't frankly be bothered to find out his whole history. Someone else can pursue this if they want. Elemimele (talk) 15:11, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
Second time round
[edit]This draft has a bit of a chequered history. I moved it to main-space following a very long wait, it lasted a week, and got re-draftified. I requested deletion as I didn't think realistically I'd be able to improve it much. Months later, I found myself regretting this, and requested its return, after some discussion with other editors; Onel5969 will remember!).
I've added a couple of inline citations from new sources. I'm sorry that most of the referencing remains general, a result of this being originally a translation from the German Wikipedia, which tends to use general referencing much more than us. I have included the German title of a journal in which he published, as requested by new page page reviewer.
I'm resubmitting in hopes that it only failed by a whisker last time and my paltry improvements will be enough! I'd ask you to consider his place in history both as an "artist" (an architect who has influenced major bits of civic gardening in Vienna) and as an author (whose books are still available today), less so as an academic, and with passing interest as the father of Othenio Abel (notability not inherited, of course).
