species authority
[edit]How do we know that the authority is (Rupr.) Maxim, not (Rupr.) Herder? True, the reference for that ( Germplasm Resources Information Network, a .gov site) says (Rupr.) Maxim, but it doesn't say that (Rupr.) Herder is wrong. There are two other .gov sites that say it is (Rupr.) Herder (the forest service "Weed of the Week" and the USDA plants database). Based on this, it seems more likely that it is (Rupr.) Herder, not (Rupr.) Maxim. Can anyone add more info? Lorax (talk) 02:35, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately the Flora of North America does not cover this family which would provide an excellent online citation. However there are many other authoritative sources showing that (Rupr.) Maxim is the correct authority. Also GRIN is written by very scientific minded botanists whereas the the USDA people (which manages the Forest Service as a branch of the USDA) are more application oriented (and since they are the same organization they probably copied the weed of the week info right out of the USDA PLANTS page. All of the below sources and the GRIN I trust more than the USDA on this, I think it is just a typo by the USDA and that's why I originally wrote the correction explicitly out rather than just writing the correct one in the taxobox.
- Missouri Plants an excellent source often cite on Wikipedia, maintained by a botanist.
- Missouri Botanical Gardens one of the leading botany research centers in the western hemisphere.
- Brooklyn Botanical Gardens the other leading botanical research center in the western hemisphere.
- I originally got the information from Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada by Gleason and Cronquist; Publisher: New York Botanical Garden Pr Dept; 2 Sub edition (July 1991) ISBN-10: 0893273651.

alternatives
[edit]At least in Arlington, Va., Viburnum dilatatum is listed as invasive (Non-native Invasive Plants of Arlington County, Virginia) so it should probably be removed as an alternative. 69.72.92.243 (talk) 06:52, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
I was surprised to see so many non-natives recommended as alternatives in the eastern North America. It's a shame this list hasn't been updated in 6+ years. I went ahead and removed all of the suggestions for non-native species and left the natives. There are serious ethical issues with recommending non-native species in an area even if they aren't currently invasive. Reportingsjr (talk) 17:45, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
