This page does not accurately portray a list of video games considered the best

The function of this page is nominally to list games which by some sort of consensus can be understood as the 'best/greatest' of all time. That's a technically fine description for a page. The problem is that this page doesn't actually do that, instead what it does is accumulate listings for games in "top 100/300/500/etc." rankings and anything which gets 6 or more listings is apparently eligible to be added. This is nonsensical as being listed as the 300th best game of all time doesn't make it the best game of time, it makes it the 300th best game of all time. Being listed as the 300th best game of all time six different times by six different publications doesn't make it the best game of all time either. The entire methodology for this page needs to be re-examined or it needs to be re-titled to something that accurately categorises the actions being performed therein.

To avoid having to discuss every entry on this page, let's look at one in specific. This page lists Overwatch as nominally a game 'considered the best' as per the title. But if we actually open up the sources listed for Overwatch we get that Overwatch is:

Edge: the 49th best game of all time.
Polygon: the 198th best game of all time.
Game Informer: The 23rd best game of all time.
IGN: 51st best game of all time.
GQ: 94th best game of all time.
Popular Mechanics: 77th best game of all time.

Certainly, considering the many tens of thousands of games that exist in the world even being ranked means that Overwatch is a very good game, the cream of the crop. At the same time though, it's pretty clear that nobody in the cited source actually considers it the BEST of all time, merely very good. Overwatch is far from the only game on this page that has this issue, it's just one that I picked to serve as a good example since Overwatch doesn't even have any cited sources placing it inside the top 20, let alone as the single greatest of all time. From the point of view of this page the very phrase 'best of all time' is meaningless because almost none of the games meet the implied criteria of 'being listed as greatest by six different, reliable sources' instead meeting the somewhat obfuscated criteria of 'being listed as a notably good game by six different, reliable sources.' These are very different positions, many people would be happy to agree that Overwatch is a good game, I doubt very many reputable sources would be comfortable with saying it is the best game ever released at any point.

If you think about it, it's already obvious from the fact that this page has so many different games on it that the criteria is nonsensical. Just so that the number is clear in black and white, this page has no less than 250 different games listed as the 'best of all time.' If we compare to other mediums:

There are 22 novels listed here. This is about 1/10th the size of the gaming article for a medium that has been around since (just going by that same article) the 14th century, compared to the earliest game on this list in 1972. This means that the relative density is about 150x less (~1/10th the books spread across ~15x the length of time).

Consider also the film version of this article which doesn't even have an actual list per se but still focuses only on films that have definitely been said to be the greatest.:

The pattern here is that both the film and the novel version of this article focus only on films and novels which are objectively considered the greatest of all time by their cited source, if we go back to the listed polls for Overwatch, what these sources actually consider the greatest of all time are:

Polygon: Tetris
Game Informer: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
IGN: Super Mario World
GQ: Portal 2
Popular Mechanics: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Only these five games are actually considered to be 'the greatest' by these sources, everything else listed is merely 'almost the best' or some other such turn of phrase.

You're referring to a different kind of list. As the lede discusses, this list is made from appearing on multiple top X lists. It's not claiming to have discovered the #1 game EVAR, if such a thing even exists. So yes, we know.

As for if it would be worth creating a new article, or a new section to this article, that only discussed #1 entries: My thoughts are that this is unlikely. You offer List_of_novels_considered_the_greatest_of_all_time as an example, but it is a problematic list and should probably be adjusted greatly in my opinion. The problem is that, to avoid being original research by synthesis, we would need sufficient authoritative sources. Say we dropped a list from the current article and added a new list. It wouldn't change 95% of the list, and any entries that did get dropped would still have been reasonable beforehand, having had multiple other sources backing them even without the dropped list. But from just #1s? Portal 2 might disappear and Donkey Kong suddenly be added. That's very unstable. The novels list, as well as a hypothetical #1-only VG list, has the issue that it's really about what sources are you using. That novels list has a ton of single-source entries. If I think that who cares what Robert McCrum thinks and remove the source, then Pilgrim's Progress goes from on-the-list to off-the-list. If I go find a few sourced Swedish critics opinions, then suddenly a bunch of Swedish novels might rocket onto the list. I think a better hypothetical example than your examples would be something like five sources where there's one game (call it Game-A) that gets #2, #5, #6, and #18 on 4/5 of the sources, and another Game-B where a single source gave it #1, but all of the others ignored it. Game-A is much more "durable"; even if a new source is added that doesn't include it, or a source that has it is removed, it clearly has backing. But the article is claiming to have discovered that, because that is what the word 'best' means, further if we read the article the very first sentence is: "This is a list of video games that have consistently been considered the best of all time by video game journalists and critics."

My point is that this is simply not true at all, the article does not in fact contain a list of what video game critics consider to be the best of all time, it (to be charitable) contains a list of what video game critics consider to be close to the best of all time. What I'm suggesting (by way of the Overwatch example) is that nobody actually considers Overwatch the best game of all time, let alone consistently, therefore it shouldn't be on a list that is explicitly about the best of all time. I'm aware that I'm basically calling for the entire article to be scrapped or to start from scratch and that's a big ask but I just don't see how this article can in any way be called an accurate representation of its title or even its lede. What this is currently a list of is games that appear most frequently on top 100/300/500/whatever lists from game critics. I suppose there is an argument that being close to the best is 'near enough' when taken in aggregate but Overwatch doesn't even really pass this test being in every case outside the top 20 and on aggregate being well outside the top 50 as well. If we are to assume that a hypothetical aggregate of all such lists forms some sort of authority on the best games of all time then surely being 50 places removed from 'best' would not really be 'best.' I didn't really cite those other two lists as lists to aspire to, the novel one in particular is pretty lacklustre but the point is that both the film and the novel one actually talk about 'best.' They don't talk about 'almost' or 'appearing in the top 100' they talk exclusively about what has been considered the best by someone at some point in time. We can take issues with the sources used but the fact remains that the sources definitively say 'best' not just 'very good' which is what the sources in this article are saying. What you are describing is a question of semantics that is already explained by the lede. Please refer to the third definition here at Wiktionary, wikt:best#Noun: "The person (or persons; or thing or things) that is (are) most excellent." In other words, "considered the best (plural)" not "considered the best (Singular)". The current list is not attempting to do what you are asking, so it's pointless to keep bringing it up. As the lede explains, this list is using a definition that means being 50 places removed from the top of the list is relevant, because it appeared at all on a best games of all time list from a reliable source. Ergo, according to that critic, that game is one of the best of all time, even if it's merely #61 (out of hundreds of thousands of games). Overwatch has been listed as one of the best games of all times according to the sources given; this is a reliable, checkable fact. Pretend this article is called "List of video games considered to be in the top games of all time by video game critics" if that helps, as that is what the lede says, but is being shortened for brevity.

More productively, if you'd like to start writing a draft article that focused exclusively on the actual singular best games akin to the film article, you're welcome to try - but I suspect it will be a hard article to write and rife with POV concerns, akin to my comments above about the current best novels article. I'm struggling to parse what you think your argument is here. The definition you cite for the word best does not agree with your interpretation of it and your argument about PoV concerns is just as inconvenient to the article in its current state as it would be to the one I'm proposing because they both rely on picking and choosing sources. I could use literally the exact same listed sources as the existing article to construct my one for example, so if you wanted to argue that this would somehow have a PoV concern it would just as problematic to the article which already exists.

Overwatch has not been listed as one of the best games of all time, that's the entire point of my complaint, or at least it hasn't anymore than any other game. By this metric there are literally hundreds of games (we know this firstly because there are top 500 lists and secondly because the article already has ~250 entries) which meet the criteria of 'best of all time' and that's obviously nonsensical. As it stands, the list is not currently a 'list of Video Games considered the best' you're already using weasel words here like 'one of' and 'shortened for levity' but even if that's the case it needs to be unshortened because it turns the article into a lie. It's indisputable that the list is not a list of what it claims to be a list of, by the definitions of either Wikipedia or of any reliable English Dictionary.

I cannot make it any more plain that you are either mistaken or lying about what the article says, for the purpose of clarity here is the lede again: "This is a list of video games that have consistently been considered the best of all time by video game journalists and critics."

As enlightening as your rebuttal of "stop whining" is, I actually agree with the previous poster. This page declares itself as "games that have consistently been considered the best of all time". Several of these games, as pointed out above, have NEVER been considered the "best of all time" by any of these sources. Most of them are simply on a list, somewhere, as merely "sort of good" or "Top 50-ish". Some aren't even that close. Apparently all it needs for your criteria is to be on six different lists, regardless of the actual placement. For example, "Inside" has indeed made exactly six lists... and one of them was at number 257 of 500. #257 is a far, far cry away from "best of all time". By this same logic, a game that makes #500 on six different lists can be put down as a "best of all time", while a game that makes #1 on "only" five lists will not qualify.

And I appreciate how much you want to argue on the definition of the word "best", but instead of pretending that "best" can be a plural word, maybe you could eliminate all confusion by either including only the games that have actually been considered #1 somewhere, or change the page to refer to "Games that have had extremely positive acclaim". Though honestly, I'm sure the latter page already exists elsewhere, and this page sounds like it really should just be scrapped entirely. But at the least, just a much shorter page of all games that have been voted #1, regardless of how many other sources agreed with them.

Incidentally, this article also has a HUGE western bias, specifically from the USA. Which I guess makes sense on the English Wiki, and from sources that are almost entirely from the US. (With, what, 2 UK sources? 1 French? And absolutely 0 from Asia.) But still, it further calls into question the validity of any of this. The inclusion criteria for this list is far too broad, and is nothing like the other "considered the best" lists for other media (and sports). The article title does not reflect the actual content of the article. This article is more like a "hall of fame" list, or "considered among the best" list, rather than an actual "considered the best" list. This article is pointless. The purpose of having "considered the best" lists is to list the games that are considered the very best, not a bunch of random games that were ranked #97 and #52 on some lists. That defeats the purpose of having a "considered the best" list. In award pages, we don't just randomly list out nominations and ignore the winners. In award pages, the winners are always listed first (and the nominees may or may not be listed). This article refuses to name the winners, but instead only lists off a bunch of random nominees. This whole article is just an exercise in dilution, to dilute the actual games considered the very best with a bunch of random games that were never considered the best. It's a nonsense article. The list is pretty useless if the rankings are not being taken into account. In no way, shape or form is a #99 ranked game equal to a #1 ranked game. That's just ridiculous. For comparison, check out Metacritic's Best Games of the Decade list. They took 48 separate lists of best games of the decade, and then ranked the games based on a weighted ranking system (a certain number of points for various top 20 positions), while at the same time mentioning how many 1st and 2nd places the games got. That's a far more sensible approach than this article, which has a bizarre criteria that makes no sense. If this article is just going to indiscriminately list games without taking their rankings into account, then this list is useless and redundant, and may as well be scrapped, as other users have already suggested above. Metacritic top 100 as a list

Not a suggestion or request, more of a query. As the title suggests, I was wondering if the top 100 best-ranked games of aggregator sites such as Metacritic or OpenCritic could in themselves count as one of the 6 qualifying lists? I'm not suggesting multiple be added since you would assume their lists look generally the same, but even if such lists are not technically curated lists of one team's own personal best games, being a summary of the wider critic consensus seems in line with the goals of this article. It also helps to give some weight to publications who otherwise do not publish best of all-time lists. With no clarification, "best" just means best in general. If for some reason era-specific lists were split off, then they would need clarification - List of fourth-generation video games considered the best or the like. But the "top level" article needs no such clarification. Additionally, "all time" is a rather hype-y phrase that's more suited for a magazine than an encyclopedia - it's possible that opinions will change in the future, so it's not even an accurate claim. Edge 2009 is deliberately worded as "best games to play today" rather than "best of all time". You're right about the Edge 2007 list, but I can't find where the GI 2001 list is stated to be a reader poll. The Edge 2009 list title is worded that way to emphasize that the games were chosen based on how well they've held up, rather than on their cultural significance; the editors still intended for it to be seen as a GOAT list, and the phrase "greatest of all time" is even in the introduction. Hyper's list is locked behind a paywall, so I can't figure out exactly what the methodology was behind each selection; that being said, I'm pretty sure based on the magazine cover and list introduction page that it's an editorial list. --UnnecessarySuggestions (talk) 19:20, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

1. Is there an official definition of original platform? I initially started this note to bring up SW Kotor as being both PC and Xbox. The PC version was in the same year. Looking at other games that is often the case where one platform gets the game a month to half a year before hand. There should be a cut-off, but I believe that most people would consider same year(or maybe 6 month) releases as being multi-platform. Also looking at the immediately previous Sands of Time, its wiki seems to suggest it was multiplatform from launch.

2. I just discovered this list this week and I think it is the best way to tackle this concept on Wikipedia. It doesn't avoid the fact that it is subjective. However, showing it around to friends and examining it closer, I agree with the previous comment that list selection is probably the most important thing for making this list the best it can be. In addition to older lists as mentioned, there is a serious lack of non-Eng lang media contributions. I do not think this could be considered complete without hearing what countries around the world think. The most glaring is the lack of a Japanese source as so much of this gaming legacy owes a lot to Japan. It may not result in any differences, but until then the title is list of video games considered the best by the eng language press. (and one dutch and one french) (PS I ran into a wall myself as I do not know Japanese. So, I apologize for just pointing out the problem and not offering a solution.)

For 1, no official cutoff, but I think we've generally used "within a month." Even if this is extended to "within 3 months", KOTOR PC still wouldn't qualify. Original Platform is not a very important field in general, but fair to suggest a longer cutoff should maybe be used. For 2, agree it's an issue, but finding sources that qualify is the trick - the current definition is rather restrictive, intentionally so, which is an issue for international sources. The JP media really loves reader polls, for example, which are currently excluded (example, also restricted to post-1989 technically but eh.). For 3, there will never be a mathematical formula; it's inherently a matter of where to draw the line, on if people prefer a short list of the very strongest games or a more extensive list that might drag a little. The other thing to consider is that drawing the line higher exacerbates the bias of the list toward games from 1990-2010 due to sources being able to include them and have them fresh in memory. Drawing the line lower might attract complaints that it includes entries not "best" enough. So, it's a balancing act. (I'm on the record as advocating for a lower line for recent and old games, but that complicates the current simple description of the criteria.) SnowFire (talk) 23:54, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

By my glance that would put Tetris, Super Metroid, and RE4 as the top 3 with most appearances. Number of Sources

How exactly is the number of sources each game has being tracked and updated? There used to be a public spreadsheet but it was abandoned awhile ago. No to both. ESTNN appears to just be a Buzzfeed-esque content mill. Even if it was notable, it doesn't even appear to be their own list - they copied & pasted the game descriptions from elsewhere, and seemed to be just using Metacritic ("The following top 100 games are ordered by their Critic's Rating (as recorded by Metacritic) "). Finally, the person "compiling" this list is, according to About Us... "Brandon is a Niagara University student studying History and Communication Studies". So yeah, it's a random college student who probably spent an hour doing some copy-pasting and calling it a day. If we wanted to go down this path, we should just cite Metacritic directly. Gamespot's list as of 2007

Here is Gamespot's "Greatest Games of All Time" feature as it appeared when it ended in 2007. Although not a single article, but rather a regular feature, the list passes all the criteria (RS; clearly stated as "best/greatest of all time"; editor-chosen; no restrictions by era/genre/platform); furthermore, the feature is still presented as a single list, even though it was not assembled all at once. So, I'm going to incorporate it into the main list, if there are no objections.
