Suggested list format

This is the same format used for a large list of ships having multiple pages. It is simply a copy of the format from List of Empire ships (A). The advantage I see in the format, for any collection of ships of a type, builder, name or whatever, where the amount of information varies from bare existence to a short piece linking to a full article. Further, it is expandable to cover multiple pages if the collection becomes very large while allowing additions for a ship up to that point at any time. In this case a number of ships are just the fact it was mentioned with no build date or other information. When found that should go to the titles as standard for ships and discussed at Project Ships. If User:Laterthanyouthink does not like the format a revert is easily done — at least now before additions. Palmeira (talk) 12:28, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I'm happy with this format, Palmeira, thanks for that. I have added to some of the headings, and have got sucked back into trying to work out which ships were involved in which incidents, again, finding some I had to reconsider. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:52, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Good. Some may complain that those uncertain ships are not fit but I see value in at least a listing. That forms a basis for building and correcting information to become worthy. There is a lot of near garbage on Wikipedia, but even that provides a basis for improvement to something worth recording as others find reliable sources and correct or expand. I did some casual searching to pin down those ships without builder or date and found some leads, but have not followed those yet. Palmeira (talk) 12:32, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Well, Palmeira, having discovered that I did in fact have access to the British newspapers online, I have spent far too many hours trawling through them in an effort to pin down those last few crucial details re the ship in the 1850 Worthing incident, and various others. I managed to find a few interesting things, but after a while stopped documenting the comings and goings, because there were so many (mainly the 1839 ship). I would have liked to have found a definitive end for the 1839 ship and a definitive beginning and end for the Worthing ship, but at this point I have to call it a day and move on to other things. Such information mining can be rustrating indeed. Irritating as well. I know of information once in public libraries and later in digital form on line that has either disappeared behind pay walls (even though long out of copyright) or vanished entirely. The worst in my view are U.S. government data sets that due to change of command, change of agency or just neglect are no longer to be found. In the U.S. anything not classified or falling in specific "privacy" areas is deemed paid for already by taxpayers. Thus I get highly irritated when I look for a large data set that was once there now gone. Then libraries, once with microfilm covering the entire published archive of major and local papers did away with microfilm with "Its all on the web" excuse. It is not. I once could read the New York Times as published from the earliest days. Articles were in situ so nearby minor bits or advertising could be seen. Daily shipping was a section. Now? Pay. Search, find the article, nothing by chance nearby will be seen. The digital excuse has been used for major losses of information once available. Palmeira (talk) 12:25, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Page name

At the initial discussion on WT:Ships, I had suggested renaming this page to List of ships named Lalla Rookh, (and still do). As this is essentially a list page, not an article about a single ship or an index, a rename should be considered. (jmho) - wolf 05:32, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
