2022 Edmund Burke School Shooting
On April 22, shots were reported at the Edmund Burke School in Washington DC. Do we plan on adding this to the list? I'm aware there's some speculation regarding the situation, but nevertheless it was a School Shooting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MateoFrayo (talk • contribs) 23:06, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Propose numbering
The list should tell the reader the number of shootings in the article. If that means adding a number column on the left side, then it needs to be done. These articles need to inform the reader of basic information, such as how many have occurred, how many happen on average, and how this compares to the rest of the world. Viriditas (talk) 23:34, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
- NPR reports there have been 27 to date (with source), but this list only shows 18 for 2022. Viriditas (talk) 00:23, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

The 21st century list is missing a 2017 school shooting in Freeman, WA
Add the 2017 shooting that happened in Freeman, WA at Freeman High School.
Description: On September 13, 2017, a gunman opened fire at Freeman. The alleged suspect, 15-year-old sophomore Caleb Sharpe, brought two guns, an AR-15 rifle and a Colt 1903 pistol then killed one student, Sam Strahan, who was attempting to prevent the shooting from taking place. Three other students were injured and taken to the hospital. Sharpe was tried as an adult, and his trial date was set for October 5, 2020, but has been pushed back to June 2021, due to COVID-19. The trial was again been pushed back to January 2022 however Sharpe pled guilty before the trial began. 2601:602:C600:A00:70B6:1144:264E:CD01 (talk) 20:15, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

A total of 10 students suffered minor injuries from shards of glass. 2 of those students were transported to Mount Hood Medical Center for minor lacerations; the other 8 were treated by emergency medical personnel at the school. All students were evacuated by police and school officials and placed on school buses where they were met by parents at a designated location. 15 year old Chad Antonio Escobedo remains incarcerated in the Donald E. Can we add a counter to the list of shootings?
Can we add statements to the tables to list the total number of incidents? We can use the `{table row counter|id=tablename}}`
to count the rows.
Example - For the 2000s table:
The original unmodified table looks like:
=== 2000s ===
{|class="sortable wikitable" style="font-size:100%;" ...
Now we add a name to the table: id="2000s"
and then add a statement that shows the total: {{table row counter|id=2000s}} incidents.
The result should look like this:
=== 2000s ===
{{table row counter|id=2000s}} incidents.
{|class="sortable wikitable" style="font-size:100%;" id="2000s" ...
Then we can then also have a total counter for the whole century with:
`Total incidents listed here for the 21st century:
{{#expr: {{table row counter|id=2000s}}+{{table row counter|id=2010s}}+{{table row counter|id=2020s}} }}`

Scope of this article is too wide
A 8-year old child found his mother's gun under his mother's bed and brought it to his school in his backpack. On Tuesday, May 17th at around 10 AM the gun accidentally discharged in the students backpack in the classroom and injured a 7-year old classmate.
Really? A shooting should involve at least one death, or else this will remain giant. --Bageense(disc.) 06:02, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- See the link above. Education Week has the definitive list. Once again, it’s odd that the the US government doesn’t track these statistics, but apparently the gun lobby has influenced elected representatives to prevent multiple agencies from studying the problem. Viriditas (talk) 08:25, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
In over 200 of the "school shootings" on this list, no one was killed. In one of them, a BB pellet went through a school bus window in a rural area and no one was killed or even injured. The RS doesn't call it a school shooting, so we shouldn't be calling it that. This list is currently one of media-reported firearm discharges that occurred proximate to an educational campus property (in college parking lots, adjacent streets, outside athletic fields, near stadiums, etc.) and which also includes shootings that happened in a school. BBQboffin (talk) 18:41, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Bageense I agree—this is ridiculous. Nobody would think of this type of incident when they hear "school shooting". Oktayey (talk) 19:23, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

excludes rejected suitors and estranged spouses...why?
Why would we exclude just these? If it happened on school grounds, it's a school shooting, isn't it? I feel like this is kind of saying, "Oh, if it's a guy pissed at a woman, it doesn't really count because it was only coincidental that he tracked her down where he knew she'd be, and that happened to be in a school." Same could be said for any victim who was a target rather than a random person who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, couldn't it? valereee (talk) 14:52, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
Correction to May 16, 2001 shooting information
Correction to May 16, 2001 shooting at Pacific Lutheran University: The cited article from the Seattle Post Intelligencer states that the suspect shot the victim four times with a 9mm pistol, not a .22 pistol as described in this table. The suspect was carrying a .22 pistol but the shooting was performed with a 9mm pistol. Sam Altenberger (talk) 01:36, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

- Per WP:NOTBURO, a closer can close in favor of an alternate suggestion not mentioned by the nominator in the initial request, given sufficient support. This isn't uncommon when a nominator identifies a problematic name but an even better suggestion for a move target comes up in discussion and finds consensus. No need to restart the RM from scratch. - Alternate suggestion: support move to List of school shootings in the United States, 2000–present, no need for parenthetical disambiguation. The other article could be moved to List of school shootings in the United States, 1800–1999. I would also be fine with 2000– if people thought "present" wasn't needed. - Comment after 2000 makes it seam like its 2001–present. Use specific dates like 2000–present or 21st century (actually maybe not a good idea because of the whole 2000 is in the 20/21 century debate). cookie monster 755 06:33, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

- This might be possible, but the source you cite is confusing and contradictory. It first identifies three "victims". There's no indication of whether they were killed or only wounded, or how serious the injuries might be; if a bullet only grazes the skin that person is a "victim" but not seriously injured. Then later the article says, "Several cars were hit by bullets but nobody was hurt", which makes no sense if there were victims. We need more details. Sundayclose (talk) 01:14, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Aoidh (talk) 03:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Although I'm sure the previous comment was made in good faith, I disagree that consensus is required if (and only if) better, clearer sources are provided. Without a better source, even consensus is insufficient to add an item that is not well sourced. Most, if not all, of the entries in this list were not contingent on consensus, just appropriate sourcing. If better sources were provided, I wouldn't hesitate to add the item with no discussion unless someone makes a cogent objection to inclusion. I've restored the status of this request to "unanswered", at least for a bit longer, so that others will be aware about the need for sources. Sundayclose (talk) 03:27, 4 November 2022 (UTC)- Consensus determines if a source is sufficient. The source, as given, verifies that there was a shooting at the school and meets the criteria described in the lede, it is your objection to the source that creates a need for consensus for inclusion. The need for sourcing does not mean the question is unanswered; sitting in a queue will not create sources, and the purpose of that template is not to make others aware of issues, it is the request that a specific edit be made, and in its current state, the edit is not ready to be made. - Aoidh (talk) 16:48, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Aoidh: Respectfully, I fully agree with everything except for the need to immediately close the request as answered. Others are more likely to notice and possibly respond to a request if it still open. If someone else considers the source sufficient, then that can be stated here and if necessary we can discuss it. My questioning of the source is insufficient reason to mark the request as answered. I have opinions, but I alone don't decide whether a request should be added to the article. Please explain, if I had never questioned the source, if I had that much authority here, would that mean you would not close it? My desire has been to get the item in the article if possible, not to stop discussion. If you think the request can be left as unanswered by my striking my comment, I'll do so. Please tell me so I'll know whether to do that. But I'll ask you in good faith to go ahead and change the status to unanswered because there's no need to edit war over keeping the request open. I accept your actions as done in good faith. But I think what you just did could very well prevent a legitimate item from being added to the article. I don't think that's your intent. Thanks. - The purpose of that template is absolutely not to invite others here to comment and discuss the applicability of a source, it is solely to ask for uncontroversial changes to be implemented in an article that cannot otherwise be edited by the person making the request, per WP:EDITXY. Your comment objecting to the addition suggests that it is not uncontroversial, so a consensus is needed to enact controversial changes via that template. Discussion is neither halted nor hampered by the answering of that template, as discussion is outside of its scope. If you have changed your mind on the entry and feel that the source is sufficient, there is nothing stopping you from adding the entry yourself, in which case the edit request is no longer necessary. - Aoidh (talk) 19:13, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- I never said or even hinted in any of my comments that the template is to "invite others here to comment" as you have now stated two times. If you think I did I'd like to see a direct quotation. I only said, "Others are more likely to notice and possibly respond to a request if it still open." Since you seem determined to leave this discussion closed because of my initial comment, I'll strike it, re-open the request, and wait at least a couple days to see if anyone offers a better source. I'll reconsider whether I think it is a sufficient source. I may be able to find another source myself if I have time. The edit is not controversial so does not require consensus unless there is an objection to the source, per the docs for the template. If I had never made my first comment, it would have been inappropriate for you to close the request that included a source only two hours after the request was posted. Please don't close the request until or unless someone objects to leaving it open for good reason, or there are no responses after a few days. I'll be happy to close it myself at that point. I suspect within a couple of days the item will be added to the article or this request will be closed. That's quite reasonable. Thanks. Sundayclose (talk) 20:53, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Please remove the "19th and 20th centuries" section (including the {{main}} template), and the "21st century" section header. Since this is a list of shootings since 2000, people wouldn't expect a pre-2000 list to appear, and it's out of scope for this list. For April 22, 2024 shooting in West Richland, Washington, change “killing a 17-year-old girl and abducting his child with his ex-wife” to “killing his 17-year-old girlfriend and abducting his child with his girlfriend”. - Why remove ex-wife wording? That is what is in the article you link to. RudolfRed (talk) 01:18, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Not done Stale, contested request. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:55, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Read the article carefully. The child who was abducted was the son of his girlfriend, not his ex-wife.
- “The child, identified as 1-year-old Roman Santos, was found in the back seat unharmed and was taken safely into police custody.”
- “[T]he West Richland Police Department identified the two women who were killed as Amber Rodriguez, Huizar's ex-wife, … and Angelica Santos, his 17-year-old girlfriend and Roman's mother.” 50.37.87.176 (talk) 16:50, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Wrong dates/duplicate incidents
The 11/7/2007 incident at Miami Carol City Senior High School actually occurred on 11/6/2007. It is also listed as happening on 2/11/2008. 2600:1702:C71:8160:64D9:97C4:354B:13D (talk) 23:43, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
some incidents listed do not qualify as school shootings per wikipedia's definition
Wikipedia's page for school shooting describes one as an armed attack. Multiple events are negligent discharges, not attacks (though the one where the guy injured himself via negligent discharge while, "adjusting himself," is somewhat amusing). 76.166.217.70 (talk) 11:19, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

The date for the school shooting in Mission, Kansas is erroneously dated as 3/1/2018 although the source indicates that the shooting occurred in 2019. I am presuming it is a typographical error as it is correctly listed in the 2019 section. 8vdude8 (talk) 03:06, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
