Should there be updates about legal of suspect/perpetraitor?
As I just reverted a good faith edit about this, in which there was sourced information about a potential change towards the legal standing of the suspect in a settled case, should we include the changes in the general summary about the incident? Or should the summaries be about the general legal and more about the incident and who was affected by the shooting incident? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leaky.Solar (talk • contribs) 16:24, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
BB / Pellet guns are apparently considered firearms on wikipedia?
The legal definition of a firearm involves a projectile acted upon by an explosive, BB/Pellet guns are not considered to be firearms. Why is it that incidents involving BB/Pellet guns are included on a list of school shootings involving firearms? I suggest they be removed from this page. Archer2150 (talk) 04:02, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi editor who forgot to sign their post. The only one talking about firearms is you. Are you saying one cannot be shot by a pellet gun? The title has nothing whatsoever to do with guns. I'd suppose if there was a shooting involving a bow and arrow or a spear gun, that should be here too. John from Idegon (talk) 00:47, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- I apologize that i forgot to sign my post. What prompted me to post this in the talk page is that the opening sentence of this page is "This article lists in chronology and provides additional details of incidents in which a firearm was discharged at a school infrastructure or campus in the United States" This sentence clearly specifies that a firearm was used. Archer2150 (talk) 04:02, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- It's a valid point. The disconnect tbetween the lead and the title has existed since this edit [1] in 2012 by user:BlueMoonlet added the lead. I don't believe there was any discussion about whether teh article should have been restricted to firearms or not. There was a very brief discussion of BB guns in 2015 Talk:List_of_school_shootings_in_the_United_States/Archive_1#BB_gun_shootings_too?. Certainly some non-explosive projectile weapons are are considered firearms in some jurisdictions. In Canada, if it has a barrel and it shoots something faster than a certain speed, or with more than a certain energy, it's classified as a firearm. According to Air gun laws the US federal gov does not classify air guns as firearms, but some states do. Bows, and particularly crossbows are another animal. They may be restricted or prohibited even when not classified as firearms. For all I know there are jurisdictions that do classify them as firearms. According to Laws on crossbows they are not firearms in the US.
- So, what are the choices?
- explosive firearms only
- things that are classified as firearms where the shooting took place
- things that are classified as firearms anywhere in the US, regardless of whether they are where the shooting took place
- any weapon that is described as a firearm in in reliable sources about the shooting
- any weapon that is restricted where the shooting took place, that fires a projectile
- any weapon that is restricted anywhere in the US, that fires a projectile, regardless of whether they are restricted where the shooting took place
- any weapon that fires a projectile
- make our own definition
- any incident where that is described as as a shooting in reliable sources
- I say remove the "firearm" from the lead, and just go with anything that is listed as a shooting in the sources. Simple and easy. If someone is impaled with a crossbow bolt, I think it should be included, and the sources are very likely to call that a shooting On the other hand, if someone is hit with a slingshot, I don't think it needs to be included (#7 would) and the sources are very unlikely to call that a shooting. Meters (talk) 05:12, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- Interestingly, I didn't even realize that I was introducing the word "firearms" to the article. I thought I was simply using a word for a deadly weapon that fires a projectile, and the counterexample of pellet guns never occurred to me. I certainly see no reason to exclude a deadly projectile-firing weapon simply because it doesn't use gunpowder, but I am no expert in these matters. --BlueMoonlet (t/c) 06:37, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- To chime in giving my own thoughts with the points raised so far, In my eyes the idea of a school shooting insinuates using a proper deadly weapon, which uses a projectile, which is reasonably considered to be deadly. While a bb/pellet gun does use a projectile, I think the most that could be practically expected to happen is serious bodily harm, blinding for example [1]. While a tragedy in its own right, Ill leave it up to others to discuss if the spirit of this list is maintained with such inclusions. As for the discussion of crossbows/bow&arrow I think it would be best to leave that discussion for if (hopefully rather than when) such an event takes place. That CDC article referenced earlier includes a reference to a paper which discusses that an air rifle pellet could prove deadly if it penetrates and reaches the heart, the paper itself being prompted by an incident in which it was not considered that such an injury could prove lethal in its progression until further symptoms were presented.[2] Unfortunately for the discussion in my eyes is that the paper specifies air rifles, which will commonly utilize metallic projectiles. Perhaps we should specify metallic projectiles? However it is a thin line to tread without excessively complicating this article... Archer2150 (talk) 21:53, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

- Should we not just defer to the main school shooting article's definition? It seems unnecessary to define school shooting differently on the same website. From the school shooting article:
- A school shooting is an attack at an educational institution, such as a primary school, secondary school, or university, involving the use of firearms
- Should we not just defer to the main school shooting article's definition? It seems unnecessary to define school shooting differently on the same website. From the school shooting article:
- I think the distinction is important. Obviously, a crossbow or pellet gun can kill someone, but none of the listed incidents had deaths related to a pellet gun. A pellet guns and crossbows are much less lethal than a firearm. Just look at the latest entry for 2019: someone was hit by a Pellet/BB gun but not injured. If you get hit by an actual bullet, you will be injured. Gurgle528 (talk) 13:46, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- I think that the Pickens County incident is borderline for inclusion. The news story here suggests that it was tiresome pranking and vandalism rather than a major school shooting.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:23, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
- I agree, and upon looking at lists further I think the pellet gun / bow incidents should be in List of school-related attacks as that's a more general list. A 14 year old with a pellet gun injuring some kids is completely different from a 14 year old with a firearm trying to kill kids. Gurgle528 (talk) 18:23, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

There was a school shooting at my school on my graduation year. The school is Hickman County High School in Centerville, TN. The shooting occurred prior to a school-sanctioned planned event. The shooter was a biology teacher named Donald Givens and the victim was the assistant school principal Ron Wallace.

- Not done. The story you linked merely made mention of an arrest, not a conviction. You need an updated source if you want to add a statement to the effect that so-and-so was the shooter. Also, an edit request needs to specify the exact text you want to add (along with any relevant table entries for something like this), not a general wish to add an entry. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 00:37, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

- Note to John from Idegon: Thank you, John. When I specified, "Change === 2000s === to include four more school shootings & sources",
I thought that was pretty clear as to what copy I wanted to contribute. I included the dates; school names; names of people involved; number of people killed or injured; as well as the newspaper article details where the information was taken from. I mirrored the HTML formatting exactly as it is on the page; or at least I thought I did. I'm not sure how to make the language any more clearer. The only feedback I've been getting is to specify " change x to y". Since I am new to this process, is there a different way you can explain the process so that it is a little more clear? Thank you so much for your time and patience. User:NabuThoth (talk)
Incorrect entries
Now that the page defines a school shooting as an incident where a "firearm was discharged at a school infrastructure or campus in the United States, including incidents of shootings on a school bus", the April 25, 2019 DeKalb County, Georgia incident should be removed as that was a pellet gun and not a firearm. The other entries with pellet guns and bows were already removed, I think someone just forgot to remove that one.

List criteria
What do editors think of setting a WP:LISTCRITERIA requiring list entries to be notable incidents, meaning, they have their own stand-alone article to link to. (As was recently done at an RfC at List of terrorist incidents). The list is 200k (even after being split), and a complete list of every time someone was shot in a school seems to be WP:LISTCRUFT that's contrary to the letter and spirit of WP:NOT. Thoughts? – Levivich 04:23, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Levivich: We should be sure to match this article to Talk:List of school shootings in the United States (before 2000) whatever we decide to do. I'm not exactly sure why that was split off in the exact manner that it was. It's a bit of an odd structure. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 17:02, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- IMO the entire area could benefit from standarization. We have:
- List of school-related attacks
- List of unsuccessful attacks related to schools
- List of attacks related to primary schools
- List of attacks related to secondary schools
- List of attacks related to post-secondary schools
- List of school massacres by death toll
- List of school shootings in the United States
- List of school shootings in the United States (before 2000)
- List of school shootings in the United States by death toll
- There may be more. They should all have a LISTCRITERIA requiring the entries to be notable, IMO. Otherwise, we end up having listcruft-y crime directory articles. – Levivich 18:49, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- IMHO, there should be criteria for inclusion but I don't think having a stand-alone article should be it. I believe this list is of encyclopediac value. Maybe something like 1) supported by RS calling it a "School shooting" 2) Shootings where the objective was to indiscriminately kill as many people as possible. For example, something like the Guns&America definition here - "For our part, unless otherwise stated, Guns & America defines these incidents as the shooting of two or more people in a single incident, in a public place. This definition excludes crimes of armed robbery, gang violence, or domestic violence, focusing on cases in which the motive appears to be indiscriminate mass murder.". True, that's leaning into OR territory, but I think consensus, decided ahead of time, is fine.

This needs to be added to the school shootings: https://patch.com/maryland/belair/2-teens-charged-murder-edgewood-parking-lot-shooting
There are plenty of news and media sources on this and I’m surprised it was not on there. Two students (15 & 16) took the life of a 19 year old on school property. It was drug related on school property. Three lives were ruined because the boys were both charged with murder.
I suppose it wasn’t added because it wasn’t considered national news. Nonetheless it was still a school shooting by school children. 107.77.202.5 (talk) 12:52, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- Done While I am sympathetic to Levivich's suggestion below to limit this list to notable incidents but the list as it stands has very loose inclusion standards. As such, even though this incident is only a "school shooting" by proximity, it does qualify under the current article's definition. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 22:25, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

Blounstville, Alabama, accidental shooting
The Blounstville, Alabama item in 2019 should probably not be classified as a shooting. It sounds like an accident, even if bringing a gun to school or putting it in one's pocket is illegal.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 21:02, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Why do many of these entries name the perpetrator? Isn't taking "credit" for the acts the prime reward these perps seek? That, in effect, makes this wikipedia page a form of encouragement. In other words, should we name names? Trackinfo (talk) 04:17, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shootings
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting: A 19-year-old former student (Nikolas Cruz) whose behavior had led to his expulsion began shooting students and staff members with a rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. It was initially assumed that the shooter had activated the fire alarm but the official inquiry determined that the alarm had been activated by dust disturbed by the concussion from the weapon being fired.[1] Seventeen people were killed, and 17 others were injured. The suspect shot the students on the first and third floor of the complex. The suspected shooter blended in with the crowd of fleeing students and was arrested in a residential area of neighboring Coral Springs after walking away from the school.[251] He was later charged with murder and attempted murder.[252] The suspect had sat down at a McDonald's, then went to a nearby Subway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.65.38.6 (talk) 20:58, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Precluded entries?
There are a few entries that I think shouldn't be in this article:
- February 12, 2010 - workplace shooting.
- March 9, 2010 - Same
- March 6, 2012 - Same
- September 14, 2015 - Same
- March 14, 2018 - Same
- January 2, 2019 - Not certain about this one - not technically a staffer, but awfully close.
- November 26, 2019 - The entry doesn't mention it (but the sources do), the shooter - estranged husband of the victim - killed himself. Falls under murder suicides by estranged spouses I would think.
Entirely possible I'm misreading the guidelines, so wanted to double check before removing. Anastrophe (talk) 00:02, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
massaged the intro
It was a bit overcomplicatedly worded in my opinion. I've simplified it, while setting out portions for greater clarity. I also think that incidents of nothing more than a firearm being discharged - with no person having been hit by a bullet, beggar the definition of a 'school shooting', and should be left out, but I propose that only for discussion. Anastrophe (talk) 23:26, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

- Nice work on the intro. Given this is the page for school shootings, I'd expect each entry to have someone being shot. So I'd be OK with moving other entries to other pages, which might need to be created for the purpose. It seems noteworthy and of value to record attempted school shootings as well as actual ones; similarly, all firearms discharges within schools: but this may not be the correct page for that. Outright deleting entries rather than splitting them off to another page would feel a big step backwards: I'm never in favor of deleting people's work to create valid encyclopaedic information. Having them split up over multiple pages would make consolidating and deduplicating harder, but may be worthwhile. DewiMorgan (talk) 23:37, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- Attempted school shootings could become a morasse of grey-area stuff - A student makes vaguely threatening statements on social media about shooting people at their school, the police intervene and no shooting takes place - is that an 'attempted school shooting'? Since nobody was shot, it falls outside the pretty fundamental criteria in place. Firearm discharges with nobody killed or wounded don't fit in here - or anywhere on WP that I'm aware of, but I could certainly be wrong. Some of the entries are so minor that I don't see any harm in removing them, most particularly the school resource officer who "accidentally" discharged his firearm with nobody harmed. It's a freak accident by a law enforcement officer, not notable for the encyclopedia.
- All that said, I've no particular attachment to the subject matter here, I just think the page is fairly unweildy, some of the incidents don't really rise to the blanket name of 'school shooting', so their inclusion is just clutter. According to Snopes there have been 8 incidents on school properties in March.
Do you think these should be included? It seems in spite of school closures kids are still being shot just hanging out on school property on the football fields and in the school parking lots. [1]House Tules (talk) 01:06, 17 April 2020 (UTC)HouseTules
- Two of the shootings would fall outside of scope (they'd be classified as workplace shootings), but the others would appear to be within scope. Of course, the snopes article only shines a brighter light onto the fuzzy definitions at work here - and the arbitrary scope this article conforms to. For example, I think a negligent firearm discharge where no intent was involved, and nobody was harmed, barely qualifies as a "school shooting". Likewise, where non-students are loitering in a school parking lot after school hours beggars the definition. But, there's no simple solution for that. Anastrophe (talk) 02:42, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

For the very first entry on this list, please remove the name "Dedrick Owens." Please change "6-year-old Dedrick Owens fatally shot 6-year-old classmate Kayla Rolland. To date, Owens is the youngest documented school shooter" to "A 6-year-old boy fatally shot 6-year-old classmate Kayla Rolland. To date, the boy is the youngest documented school shooter." See Talk:Shooting_of_Kayla_Rolland#Name for more details. Unfortunately, the boy we came to know as "Dedrick Owens" has never been officially named in any news reports, so this bit of original research survived in the article on the said shooting unnoticed for over 12 years. Please reword the description so that it becomes clear to future readers that this boy is unnamed. 173.76.246.128 (talk) 21:38, 24 July 2020 (UTC) 173.76.246.128 (talk) 21:38, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Please add this incident.[1][2] And this one.[3] And this one.[4][5]
- Not done First, you are evading indefinite blocks of College railman, Cadeken, and a variety of other identities for sockpuppetry. Using an IP does not entitle you to evade those blocks. As for the edit requests, you've already requested one of them and it was declined. Repeated requests don't change anything. One of the shootings had nothing to do with the school; the school just happened to to be in the way of random shooting and no one was harmed. We need to add This incident to the list because it is a school shooting because it happened on the parking lot which is part of the campus.[26] [27] [28] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1010:B117:2D00:616C:E53A:F11A:DB2F (talk) 17:58, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- Not done New sections go at the bottom of the page. It appears that no one involved was connected with the school, and it occurred at night. At this point it can't be considered anything more than a shooting that coincidentally occurred in a school parking lot and unrelated to the school. Sundayclose (talk) 21:48, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
You need to add South Beaugard High school's shooting on may 17th 2018. A man accidentally shot himself in the parking lot of South Beauregard High school. All students and faculty are safe. The man left his gun in his vehicle during an awards ceremony at the school. Goddard Kansas Shooting
In 1985 one of the first school shootings occurred in Goddard Kansas. I think this should be added to the list:
https://www.kansas.com/news/local/crime/article8073096.html

Proposal to add a column for the type of weapon used
I think one should add a column for the type of weapon used. It can explain a lot of the number of injured and dead. Example: pistol or assault rifle. /Justeraren (talk) 20:38, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think cluttering the table with another column is necessary. If it's not already in "Description" section it can be added there, with a reliable source. And many of the shootings are linked to a separate Wikipedia article for the interested reader. Sundayclose (talk) 20:45, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

For the Rigby, ID shooting that happened today, we have a bit of information about the shooter. The suspected shooter has been identified as a male student. Two students and a custodian were wounded but the victims' injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

Sad to ask - should there be a new article for “National Shoot Up Your School Day” ?
I’ve been terribly dismayed by the news that someone on TikTok managed to get this idea of December 17 as a National Shoot Up Your School Day
I’ve been seeing loads of stuff online from news sources, with lines like this:
“We are writing to inform you and not alarm you,” Oak Park and River Forest, Illinois, school administrators said in an email to parents. “We have been made aware of a nationwide viral TikTok trend about ‘school shooting and bomb threats for every school in the USA even elementary’ on Friday, December 17.”
I’m not on wiki much as an article writer - and wasn’t sure who to ask. Anyone here have ideas about what should be done?
I couldn’t find anything in the stories I’ve found so far that shows the progression over the past few days hours of the idea and responses. I’d be so grateful to better understand.
Thanks to whomever has time to read this and reply. Your work here really does matter…

- hi DrMel! I cannot say that I'm an article writer too (I have made a grand total of 0 pages in mainspace, and I'm generally here just to do quick fixes when requested by editors who can't edit this page) plus I don't want to search up the topic further myself for my mind. I'd say that I don't think it falls under the events notability criteria yet since it doesn't really have lasting effects, and hopefully it remains this way. I may be wrong however, as I said I don't know much about the event yet, so I can't really say if it counts as notable; I think another editor may have a better judgement than me. happy editing! melecie t - 13:11, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

this just happened today and I’m not sure if this would technically count but “ The shooting occurred just after noon on Tuesday at the South Education Center, the chief said, and when officers arrived they found two students who had been shot on a sidewalk outside of the school. The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting, the chief said. Both students were taken to a nearby medical center and one of the students succumbed to his injuries, the chief added. The other student remains in critical condition, the chief said. Henthorne did not share any further details about the students.”
