[edit]According to the website of the Parliament of Kiribati, in 2007:
- "There are three political parties in Kiribati, Boutokaan Te Koaua (BTK), Maneaban Te Mauri Party (MMP) and Maurin Kiribati Party (MKP)." [1] Aridd (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Supplementary note: This page, also from the I-Kiribati government, lists three parties: "Maneaban Te Mauri (Protect the Maneaba), National Progressive Party, Liberal Party". There's a contradiction somewhere. If we assume that the Maurin Kiribati Pati is the Liberal Party (does anyone here speak I-Kiribati?), then where does that leave the National Progressive Party, mentioned on one page but not on the other? It would be useful to know the source for the list of four parties in this article. Aridd (talk) 15:47, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Here's a news article from September 19, 2007 (my bolding). Crossing the sources leaves us, overall, with something of a mess...
- "A new political party has formed in the Kiribati parliament. The country’s fourth party, the Kiribati Independent party has six members, led by former Secretary of Finance and Onotoa MP, Taaneti Mwamwau. [...] The majority party, Boutokan Te Koaua, led by incumbent President Anote Tong, has secured 29 members in the country’s parliament. The main Opposition party is the Maurin Te M'aneaba Party led by the President’s elder brother, Dr Harry Tong. The second party in opposition is Maurin Kiribati Party, led by lawyer and South Tarawa MP, Banuera Berina." [2] Aridd (talk) 18:27, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
