Question
[edit]who is the person who can authorize the existence of such companies bein added to the list?

Outdated List
[edit]I think the list of the biggest oil companies here are outdated and needs to be changed. There is a newer list available Here. Aditreeslime 05:40, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
marketing or producing?
[edit]I removed the two recently added companies, which are not oil producing companies, but are gas station chains. If the consensus is that this list should include marketers, someone can add them back, but my perception has been that this is a list of petroleum producing companies. - I agree with this opinion. More retail and refining companies are removed. Also removed some companies not existing anymore. Beagel (talk) 09:17, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
Incorrect reference link
[edit]The first link listed under "Reference" was broken. I added the correct link at the bottom, but I am not sure how to remove the first (broken) link...
Categorization
[edit]Wouldn't it make more sense to just put the pages of these companies in the appropriate category, like oil companies? ThreeE (talk) 02:17, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
YUKOS doen't exist any more. I deleted it from the list. It was liquidated in 2007.

Alphabetical order?
[edit]Isn't very interesting or useful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.166.138.21 (talk) 13:51, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Criteria for inclusion
[edit]There is a need for defined criteria for inclusion. As there are probably thousands petroleum companies around the world, it is impossible to add all of them in this list. I think that we should limit the list by top 50 or top 100 of the companies. Of course, in this case there is a question if we should use the size of revenue or proven reserves. Alternative may be lists of top 25 supermajors and top 25 NOCs. It also seems that the current list includes some refiners without petroleum production. By my understanding, these companies do not belong to this list. Any idea? Beagel (talk) 05:43, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
Carbon offsets for oil exploration and production companies
[edit]At present oil exploration and production companies currently don't pay for the carbon offsets of the burning of the total amount of crude oil they sell (about 0.43 metric tons CO2/barrel[1]).
This seems unfair as other companies do pay carbon offsets, and it can be expected that the crude oil they sell will all be burned and its co² released into the atmosphere, so the amount of money needed to eliminate this (ie by planting forests) should be included in the sale price.
The local governments (which add a large tax on the product) should also pay their share, a same percentage as the tax they raise in comparison to the sale price of the crude oil.

List of petroleum companies → List of oil exploration and production companies – Although petroleum companies means companies with oil exploration and production activities, there are ongoing attempts to add oil refining and marketing companies into this list notwithstanding the notice in the beginning of this page. The new name is longer, and therefore maybe not the best choice, but hopefully it will help to make it more clear which companies belong to this list. Beagel (talk) 06:57, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Refining companies
[edit]Notwithstanding the name of this articles, guidelines at the top of this page and discussion at the talk page, there are continues attempts to include in this list refining and maerketing companies which are not involved in the crude oil exploration and production activities. Do we need to refine our inclusion criteria, make a separate list for refining companies, or is there any other solution? Beagel (talk) 06:24, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
