Air pollution to be reflected in the name?

[edit]

Good work. Since the list focuses primarily on air pollution, I think that the name should as well. What would you think of moving the page to something like List of cities with highest air pollution, or something to that effect? MikeLynch (talk) 19:29, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. How about List of most polluted cities in the world by air quality? I wanted the name to reflect how people search for this information. Ganeshk (talk) 20:27, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The most polluted part comes from the fact that we are listing the cities by descending order of air quality. Ganeshk (talk) 20:29, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that seems fine to me! MikeLynch (talk) 21:35, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination

[edit]

I nominated this article for DYK here, Template:Did you know nominations/List of most polluted cities in the world by air quality. Please comment/update. Ganeshk (talk) 23:20, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dated data...

[edit]

Great idea for a list article. My enthusiasm dampened a bit, though, when I saw that the underlying data are dated: "covering the period from 2008 to 2013, with the majority of values for the years 2011 and 2012". Surely there's more up-to-date data to draw on? Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:28, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are right. It is dated and it does not cover all cities. WHO is the most reliable reference that I could find for this data. I am hoping they will publish new data in a few years. The press is using the same WHO data for their articles this year (USA Today, a week ago). Ganeshk (talk) 12:00, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This data is also not cited correctly. The WHO only reports pollution by country. So where did you get this city-specific data? The entire article lacks citation. 2601:441:4400:1740:0:0:0:426C (talk) 16:14, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Too long a list

[edit]

"Most polluted" loses its meaning when getting to the 1000th or 1001st listing. Propose cutting off at no more than 500. Would take care of a many likely outdated at the bottom. Hyperbolick (talk) 19:25, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am good with chopping off at 500. The lead may need to be tweaked after that. Ganeshk (talk) 01:16, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done it. There are other reasons to. Differences become so slight that a wind shift on measurement day would scramble the lower levels. More and more likelihood unmeasured towns being missed there too. Hyperbolick (talk) 12:20, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Knowing the most polluted cities within each continent or region would also be useful, but the top-500 list is dominated by China and India. 2601:441:4400:1740:0:0:0:426C (talk) 15:49, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Entry 346

[edit]

The spelling of the city is Trivandrum. If you click on the link it leads to wiki page Thiruvananthapuram, and this is the real name of the city when pronounced in our language. Trivandrum is the english name for the city. If you search for flights, it usually returns as Trivandrum (or some cases Thiruvananthapuram), but not Trivendrum. I just created account to tell this, because I was not able to propose edits. Uchihasasuke06 (talk) 03:49, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List too long

[edit]

I think the list is way too long. I propose to keep only the top 50 or top 100 most-polluted cities Baronedimare (talk) 18:24, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn’t sound reasonable that only people from 100 cities can know the PM concentration of the place they live when they come to the page, while people from other cities can’t. And “I think it’s too long” doesn’t sound like a good reason to me either. I think it’s too short! --Dustfreeworld (talk) 17:54, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They could still visit the link of the source used to make this article and see the complete data. Otherwise the name of the article cannot be "most polluted cities", which imply that only a portion of all the cities is covered. I'm also tagging some users who were interested in this topic in the past @Hyperbolick @Ganeshk thomasmazzotta 08:48, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There’re over 10000 cities in the world. So it’s true that now only a portion of all the cities is covered. --Dustfreeworld (talk) 12:33, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the version of the article that you now see is already a “lite” version. You can see that from the history and also this talk page. I don’t think there’s any need to change the already established consensus. --Dustfreeworld (talk) 12:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don’t think 500 is too long of a list, but some of the numbers are really out of date. 10, 12, 15 years old, and all mixed together, so hardly accurate. Hyperbolick (talk) 18:59, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
