Qamdo Bamda Airport
[edit]If you look at the latest satellite imagery, the 5500m runway has clearly been closed, and a new 4500m runway has been constructed. Also, the "5500m runway" is actually a 4200m runway with a 1300m overrun area at the south end. I think the runway length for 14/32 should be updated to 4500m. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:647:200:DF40:CD97:8DF1:A154:117E (talk) 22:42, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- In addition to the above, the satellite imagery shows large Xs painted down the runway. This runway appears to be closed. Therefore it doesn't seem to qualify. Furthermore, although this is "disputed", I don't see any counterargument on the talk page. Accordingly, I will now boldly update the length of the runway to 4500m. (The original runway was 4200m with a 1300m overrun, but a second runway has been now paved with a length of 4500m.) J♯m (talk | contribs) 13:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Sounds good. I updated the pages for Qamdo Bamba, Zhukovsky, and Ulyanovsk Vostochny reflecting their new rankings. I also added the 5500m runway to the list of "other notable runways". Although closed, it is still notable, much like the closed runway at Groom Lake/Area 51. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:647:200:DF40:CD97:8DF1:A154:117E (talk) 22:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Istres Air Base
[edit]Take a look at Istres Air Base. Although the declared lenght is only 3750 m, there's a very long overrun area. The total length of the concrete strip is 5400 m according to Google Earth.
Another runway about 4000 m long can be found in Russia at Akhtubinsk Air Base. {{Coor|48_18_49_N_46_16_30_E_type:airport_region:RU|48° 19′ N, 46° 17′ E}}

From the article runway
"The runway is the surface from threshold to threshold, which typically features threshold markings, numbers, and centerlines, but not overrun areas at both ends." Mcremp (talk) 22:25, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Area 51
[edit]Area 51 does not show up as a regular runway but they do exist (37°14'13.99"N, 115°48'6.28"W) with a runway over 7300 meters. I guess they need the extra long runway for all the testing of the UFOs. That almost doubles the longest runway listed at the top of this article.
CaptSkeezix (talk) 02:56, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
I agree with this. It is a verifiable runway with verifiable activity and even a verifiable history of secret aeroplane projects. Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobsen is a very professional and excellent source that verifies that this is, in fact, a functional facility. Either that or change the name of the article to "List of longest public runways". Mbman8 (talk) 19:40, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
Additional columns
[edit]I really think the table needs to be included to add more detail. It should list the runways as active, inactive or abandoned. A runway of this size is notable and even if demolished it should be listed. Likewise there should be a standard way for listing the overrun areas and inactive or abandoned runway sections. In the end those add to runway length. So maybe a column for active/inactive and a second entry for the runway for the active portion if over 4,000 meters. Vegaswikian (talk) 23:37, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
It would be useful as well to take altitude (and possibly incline) into consideration. It's no surprise that the longest runways are generally at high altitude (e.g. Denver, &c.), so a more useful metric would be to normalise the data against local air density and incline.--82.16.211.56 (talk) 09:48, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Cleanup
[edit]I'd like to see some cleanup to this article and get some discussion. I don't think that Area 51 should be included because the long runway is, indeed, closed. Not only that, but it's also private USAF property which is one of the reasons why the dirt runway at Edwards is purportedly not included. I agree with Vegaswikian in that there should be a ranking based on longest pavement, longest active, longest still out there but closed (ie: Area 51). I'd like to see other comments as well. Tiktok4321 (talk) 21:05, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Go for it. The list was created to get it out of the large runway article and was pretty much just copied across as is. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 21:45, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Not sure how to fix this so I'm just commenting. The coordinates for the longest unpaved runway at Edwards AFB point to the wrong runway when I follow the link. I think the coordinates should be for 18/36, not the extension for 4R/22L. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.156.55.52 (talk) 19:33, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
Xigaze East, China
[edit]In the area near Lhasa there is an airfield listed on GNC-13 called "Xigaze East" and it shows up quite well on Google Earth at N29 21.1' E89 18.6'. The runway is concrete and is 5000 x 50 m (16404 x 164 ft). I would suggest you all take a look at this and figure out how to work it into the list. I would do so myself but I think it would be removed as "original research". But the airfield is there, as plain as day. -Rolypolyman (talk) 20:15, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Mariscal Sucre International Airport
[edit]The new Mariscal Sucre International Airport has a runway length of 13,451 feet. Janj757 (talk) 00:33, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Inept information
[edit]International wide body flights may also have [...] takeoff requirements of 13,000 ft (3,962 m) or more.
99% of the runways in the world are under 4,000m... Not even a 100% full A380 needs such a long runway to takeoff. 81.63.172.25 (talk) 00:09, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Runway elevation in list table?
[edit]I believe that including the altitude/elevation of each runway on the list is relevant information for readers, as air density is often the key factor behind runway length. This would allow readers to quickly tell whether or not the runway’s length is a result of its elevation. AvroInterceptor (talk) 06:44, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
Possible Duplication?
[edit]the Edwards Air Force BaseE runway seems to have been mentioned twice in the Other notable runways section, with the exact same length. Tribromopropane (talk) 02:38, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
