[edit]As of this date, 14-July-2010, this article is WOEFULLY incomplete. There are HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of "brands" of hot sauces available in "North America". A local liquor store sells hot sauces as a side line. (Ken's Liquor Shoppe Incorporated, 978-897-5798, 8 Hudson Rd, Stow, MA 01775, USA.) The owner told me he routinely stocks about 300 brands.
An interesting question to ask would be how many different recipes of hot sauces are made as opposed to how many different "brands" those recipes are sold under. I suspect the former is far smaller than the latter, tho I have no proof of same.
The people who come up with the names and artwork for the different brand labels show no lack of imagination in trying to differentiate and attract attention to their products. Commonly invoked themes are pain, torture, suicide, fire, heat, demons, pornography, and even, umm, ah, "bowel cleansing power". An entire article could be devoted to the art of hot sauce labels (tho I am not volunteering).
I am going to add "Dave's Insanity Sauce" (www.davesgourmet.com) since it is a reliable, well-known brand of extremely hot hot sauce with which I am personally familiar and which is by far the hottest hot sauce available in my local supermarkets. Melinda's (www.melindas.com) is another well-known brand, tho I will not add it at the moment since I do not know which of their many recipes it is that is in the local supermarkets.
BTW, it is very hard to find "Scoville heat units" for hot sauces. You can find them for peppers but not for the sauces made from those peppers. My bet is that it is because of lawyers. No one can sue a pepper if it delivers less heat (or more heat) that it is supposed to. Obviously, tho, companies making hot sauces CAN be sued if their sauces do not live up to advertised claims so, I guess, they just don't make those claims. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PDP-Anonymous (talk • contribs) 05:11, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Someone, please also add "Blair's" Death series of sauces as well - some of them are listed with very high scoville units (as per the wikipedia entry).
This really needs some clarification in terms of criteria for inclusion. And its also far too centred on the US. Needs an overhaul.86.160.102.1 (talk) 03:43, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Wikipedia is not a product catalogue
[edit]This article is incomplete, USA-centric and borders on pointless. There are thousands of commercial sauces available all over the world. What constitutes a chilli sauce? Are we listing only sauces that win awards? Which awards? Several sauces from New Zealand and Australia (e.g. Culley's) have won international and USA competitions, and Kaitaia Fire is world famous (at least where I live anyway) yet they are not listed here. Are we listing only sauces that are notable? By WP:N, almost none of the listed sauces are notable; only Tabasco, Tapatío and perhaps Trappey's are noteable enough to have their own articles that survive being deleted by the obscurati. Perhaps what we need here, if anything at all, is a list of chilli sauce styles rather than actual products; Wikipedia is not a product catalogue, and this list is probably a candidate for retirement. - I must agree, this article should simply be deleted. A single grocery store where I live has roughly twice as many hot sauces on offer as this extremely incomplete list does, and that's not even a specialty store or anything exceptional. I was quite surprised to see the title of this article as a link from the article on Sriracha sauce, and when I clicked and read this list I was honestly dumbfounded that the page has lasted this long. No offense intended to the original writer or anyone who has improved it, but after years in existence this article has not proved its usefulness. Metafnord (talk) 23:39, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Inclusion criteria
[edit]As previously mentioned by an IP and User:Jonathanischoice this article seems to lack any defined inclusion criteria. There are no references at all, most of the listed sauces do not have articles, and many do not even have a link to a web site. Many of the recent additions appear to have been SPA COI promotion by users with usernames that exhibit an apparent connection to the product added (user:BurningBushFoods and Burning Bush Hot Sauce, user:Dekker Pepper and Dekker Pepper Hot Sauce, user:Mimissauceya and Mimi's Hittin' The Sauce!), etc. One SPA with an unrelated name declared a COI on his use page (User:Insomniax20)
There's also quite a bit of WP:OR, with unattributed comments such as "Great for ..." or "Perfect for ..."
Usually these lists are restricted to notable entries. I think that makes sense here since otherwise we have a list with likely thousands of possible entries. We can restrict to only entries that have Wikipedia articles, or we can also accept entries that have sufficient sourcing to establish that they would likely qualify for a Wikipedia article (in depth secondary coverage). Claims about ingredients should be sourced.

- @Meters: that's certainly my thought, that by the time we restrict the list to notable sauces that have their own articles, perhaps after creating one or two missing article candidates that might actually be notable enough, we would have a very short list. We could probably prompt such a shake-up by recommending this list for deletion? As there are existing articles relating to the subject, it makes sense to have a list of such. I think that as long as those and maybe any other verifiable brands or styles are reflected here the article can work. Also, the criteria really needs to change to accommodate worldwide products or styles. -MJ (talk) 01:06, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
