I am expanding the current version and Including the previous elected office of the Governor's

==

This site has a list of Virginia's governors. Most, but not all of it matches up. Of issue is whether acting governors should be included. It seems sometimes wikipedia includes these governors, and other times not. To keep things clear, those acting governors not on the list should be included. Acting governors should probably be designated as such.--Bkwillwm 22:40, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The list on this page , John West (1635-1637), takes one to an article on Rev. John West (1809-1873). Please correct the link. 69.69.136.10 20:38, 23 September 2006 (UTC) Laird Pistor[reply]

Previous office field

[edit]

I think the current set-up using the previous office field makes things confusing. The field seems to be frequently used to explain that a certain governor was an acting governor. This isn't the same as a previous office and it can be particularly confusing especially in cases such as Gilbert C. Walker who served as a provisional governor and then as an elected governor. Under the current layout, in the previous office field, Walker's first entry says he was military governor during that time (which was actually his current office not previous office) and in the next field it also lists him as a provisional governor )which actually was his previous office at that point).--Bkwillwm 06:11, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Under notes, there is an error with note # 13.

[edit]

Upon what I believed was correct editing on this article and error popped up on the notes section at the bottom of this page, it needs to be fixed but I did not know how to do it? Could someone who knows how to correct this do it? Sorry, my mistake in not knowing how to do this, I will not edit or touch this page in any fashion anymore, thanks. Place of birth section

[edit]

I'm not sure we need a gubernatorial place of birth section, owing to the number of governors born outside of the state and to the poorly defined regions of Virginia. MB298 (talk) 22:01, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the place of birth section is needed to show where the governors were born. Many of our recent governors were not born in Virginia, but merely moved here and then sought the office. If you review each of our 72 governors - most of the older governors are native born Virginians. I think this goes to show a change in the times, changes in the running of the state, and changes in the overall culture of our state. The chart that is listed is HIGHLY inaccurate. It reflects where they lived at the time of taking office, but not where they in fact were born. All of our recent governors - at least the last 4 or 5 - were not born in Virginia, but Pennsylvania, the midwest, Arizona, California - not Virginia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.113.6.173 (talk) 23:26, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Chart color designation

[edit]

I have tried to paint the background color for 37. James L. Kemper, Democrat as |- {{Party shading/Democratic}}, but have failed to render the blue color in mainspace. Any help would be appreciated. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 09:14, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Colgate Darden pic

[edit]

Back in October, I wrote Dementi Studio for permission to use their photo of Colgate Darden and they agreed. How do we proceed here?

"My email to them: Is the image free use for Colgate Darden available at UVA online http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog/uva-lib:2166888 and attributed to Dimenti Studio?

"I would like to restore an image of Colgate Darden to the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_of_Virginia, which is now incomplete only in its omission of an image for him, but the general requirement at Wikipedia is to use only free use images.

"The UVA site says that the user is responsible to ascertain whether an image is free use or not, and what attribution might be required."

Dementi Studio's answer: 10/31/16 was, "You may use it, please credit Dementi Studio. Thank you.”

How do we proceed to restore the photo? TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 08:01, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

John Letcher and William Smith

[edit]

The list of Governors should denote that the holder of the governor of Virginia was disputed from 1861-1865. I propose listing John Letcher's tenure as lasting until January 1, 1864 and denoting that it was disputed from May 15, 1861 (with Pierpont) until that date. Additionally William Smith's disputed tenure from January 1, 1864 until ~May 1865 should be noted.

There is no good reason to not at least make a note of the disputed nature of the governorship during the Civil War. As the list is currently formulated it appears that Pierpont was the undisputed governor from 1861 on, which is simply not the case. Epicradman123 (talk) 03:49, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and made the changes. I couldn't quite figure out how to add party colors for Governor Smith without completely messing up the format, so if someone else could fix that, I would greatly appreciate it. Epicradman123 (talk) 04:19, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working through all of the articles alphabetically; I'm up to New Hampshire. I'd suggest not spending time trying to fix the table as it is, because it's going to get replaced in the coming weeks. --Golbez (talk) 05:33, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
