Deleted names
Hi - I'm interested to know why my additions of two players to the flutists page were rescinded by another user. Thanks. Canamets (talk) 23:10, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
- It appears that I was the editor who deleted the names you added. My edit summary read "-redlinks", which means I deleted red-linked names. On Wikipedia, links to valid articles appear in blue, whereas links pointing to non-existent articles appear in red. On lists such as this, names without Wikipedia articles are regarded as not having demonstrated notability. The usual procedure is to write an article first, which contains the necessary reliable sources to establish notability.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 01:16, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

I see that User:Erpert has flagged this list as unreferenced. While this is perfectly correct, I wonder whether a list that includes only names of people with current Wikipedia biographical articles really needs to be burdened with citations presumably intended to verify (1) the fact that each person is actually a flautist and (2) notability. Or is there some other purpose for demanding references that I haven't thought of? There are many similar lists on Wikipedia, such as List of 20th-century classical composers and List of guitarists, few of which have references, and those that do (such as the second one named) are very sparsely referenced indeed.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 15:51, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

WP:BRD merger
I have merged "Flutist" and "List of flautists"; selected "flutist" over "flautist" as it is the older term, and the one preferred by the cited musicians in "Flautist". Native section
Moving here from my talk page:
Regarding this, the list is not List of flautists by heritage/ethnicity. Being listed under "Western Classical" does not mean someone was born in the "West". Being listed under "Native American" reflects the musical tradition in which he plays. That he belongs in this section is clearly well documented. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:40, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
We need consensus around whether this is for anyone who plays "Native American style" flute, or traditional Native American flautists as they are listed on related music pages. If we go with the former, as Rhododendrites is suggesting, it will be inconsistent with the conventions at List of Native American musicians, where it's required that: "All individuals on this list should have Native American ancestry." If non-Natives who play Native-style flutes are included, the section name needs to be changed to "Native American Style" with a note that not everyone on the list is a Native American. Personally I prefer sticking with the same conventions that are used on all other Native music pages. - CorbieV☊☼ 17:49, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- If we are to exclude names on grounds of ancestry, surely this will also apply to the section on Japanese flute, where eleven of the twenty-three entries are for non-Japanese players (though one of them, Alcvin Ramos, was born in Japan, it is not clear whether or not he has Japanese ancestry). The same would also apply to at least two of the names currently in the Irish list. I'm not so sure that, in the long term, such a policy would not also apply to the "Western Classical" list.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 19:35, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- User:Rhododendrites is correct. The lead sentence of this article has always stated clearly that we're organizing the names by "musical genre", not by ethnicity of the performer -- and about 100 editors have classified about 500 flautists consistently according to this scheme for years. The consensus for this article is clear, and I think the lead sentence is clear enough that we shouldn't need to add "style" to the header of every section. —Patrug (talk) 06:03, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Robert Murchie
Any London wind player of the past 70 years or so would be a bit curious about the omission of Robert Murchie. To that, add any army bandsman who went through Kneller Hall before and during the war. Not to mention Eton. So am I. 90.204.164.29 (talk) 08:52, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- Good suggestion. From a quick google search, it looks like Murchie has enough notability & references for someone to create an English Wikipedia article about him. Once this happens, we should indeed add him to our List of flautists. —Patrug (talk) 16:07, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Ciao Fellow Wikipedians: Kindly include the name of Nicholas Laucella (aka Nicola Laucella) to your list of Western Classical Flautists. Laucella was appointed as Principal Flautist at the New York Philharmonic in New York City by its legendary Music Director Gustav Mahler in 1909 and remained with the orchestra until 1919. He also served as the Principal Flautist at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City for several years (1919-1935) and composed several noted works for flute and vocal accompaniment. Intention?
this list seems to be suffering from the same malady that afflicts many of these Wikipedia "list of ..." articles.
What is the intention of the list? Is it to list:
- Every flute player who every lived since the dawn of time?
- Every famous person who ever blew even a single note on a flute during their life?
- As many famous flutists as possible?
This is important, because, in order, these are 1) probably impossible, 2) probably useless, and 3) perhaps actually functional.
Things seem to be tending towards the second. Case in point: John Coltrane is famous, yes. But he is decidedly NOT famous for being a flutist. While he did play around with the instrument in his off-time, to my knowledge he only ever recorded with it once, on a single tune, out of the hundreds of recordings he made.
John Coltrane should not be on a list of "flautists", and I note several others whose presence here is questionable, as well.
Is rational perspective possible, or has Wikipedia abandoned that long since?
I see this note in the lede:
- "This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness. You can help by expanding it with reliably sourced entries."
Yet the article seems to be locked. Since the article is locked, then list is no longer "dynamic". Perhaps it's time to remove that note?
