I'm not sure where to bring this up, but most of the maps on the county pages have an error: they show two Isle Royales (or would it be Isles Royale?) to the left of Keweenaw county, as in this map. The smaller island should be erased, to appear as in this map.

For what it's worth, the following counties are the only ones with a correct map, the rest showing the incorrect maps:

The rest of the maps can be found at this page on Commons. They can be substituted for the bad maps. Rmhermen 05:51, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Boundary changes?

[edit]

Two interesting quotes from the article:

  • "The boundaries of counties in the U.S. state of Michigan have not changed since 1897."
  • "This transfer of territory from St. Clair to Macomb was the first and only county boundary change in Michigan since the early 20th century."

What is the first sentence supposed to mean — perhaps that there haven't been new counties since then? Nyttend (talk) 03:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Land/Water area

[edit]

I've noticed that in many county lists, counties that appear to be small or average-size on a map are ranked as the biggest counties in the state because they border a large body of water. For example, Ontonogan County is ranked as the largest in Michigan, when its land area is actually smaller than that of some other counties. Should we change every "List of counties in ________" article so that the area shown is the actual land area, or should we stick with total area? —Reelcheeper (talk) 23:09, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stick with total area. Below is a map showing the true boundaries of Michigan counties. This map was used on the List of counties in Michigan at one time, but was replace with the current map that doesn't show the true boundaries. (By the way, Keweenaw County is the largest in Michigan.) Phizzy 12:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Counties of Michigan

Total area is not a very useful statistic. It may be interesting for trivia junkies, but people do not generally live on water. Land area is a much more useful piece of information, and would standardize this article with a majority of other articles on U.S. counties per state and their areas. 2600:1700:3AE0:1F60:D6B:7ED4:780F:5B35 (talk) 20:29, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

True. Trying to evaluate population densities, for instance, gives odd results. All other county lists, as I can see (Template:U.S. Counties), use land areas. Only Maine and Michigan lists are out of tune. I may try to fix it if I have time. — 2dk (talk) 19:20, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
