Manufacturers

Many brands were incorrectly attributed to Altadis that were actually owned by General Cigar. I believe I caught at least the majority of them. I am certain that this indicates a widespread inaccuracy issue. It is nothing that couldn't be cleared up by someone with more time than I have.--Scardinoz (talk) 19:12, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Nat Sherman - which country?

Nat Sherman is an American company, and the company is based in New York City. Their cigars, however, are manufactured in different places. Right now this article lists them under the Dominican Republic, but their website shows a box of cigars with "Made in Honduras" clearly displayed [1]. Obviously some confusion somewhere.

For right now I'm moving them to the United States portion of the list.

I, likewise, noticed a number of oddities and inconsistancies in this list. For example, nearly all of the Cuban brands also are manufactured in other countries so that they can be sold in the United States. For example, Dunhill (listed as discontinued Cuban) is still made in several other countries like the Canary Islands. I suggest that a brand should be assigned to the country that its owner is based in, not necessarily the country in which it is manufactured. This is not an easy situation to resolve. Glacierman 06:02, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Just to throw another twist into the consideration: I would consider the country where the tobacco is grown to be the most important consideration, moreso than manufacture or ownership (There are a few oddities in terms of growth v. manufacture as well).

One might consider that an appropriate solution might be several lists: 'by growth', 'by company ownership', 'by manufacture'. Other organizations such as 'by flavor/intensity/rating/etc' might also make excellent lists. TheodoreLarson 07:29, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

"Boutique" brands included?

Do we include things like the cigars manufactured by Cigar Factory New Orleans (Plantation Reserve, Vieux Carre, Tres Hermanos)? Or Don Pablo Cigar Co. of Las Vegas or La Tradicion Cubana of Miami? How about Pepin Garcia's own brands (he makes Tatuaje and Cabaiguan, et alia)? For now, I am adding three of Garcia's brands to the U. S. list, as they are all made in Miami. I can't see why not. Tatuaje is owned by Pete Johnson, blended by Pepin Garcia, and a prominent fixture in the cigar industry. Cabaiguan is lesser known (lesser advertised, too) and consistently receives high reviews. The question of whether to add boutique cigars is, to me, no different than the question of whether to include craft brews in a list of American made beers.--Scardinoz (talk) 18:56, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Cigar articles: flavour profile?

My apologies if this isn't the most efficient place for this note, but it made sense to me. I was wondering if the articles about separate cigar brands should receive sections discussing the flavour profile of a cigar? To some extent, of course, this is subjective, as the perception of taste varies within certain limits from person to person. However, seeing as there are many books and magazines in which certain traits of a cigar's flavour (including aroma, strenght, body etc.) are agreed upon, I think a general outline can certainly be included in these articles without compromising the objectiveness. Naturally, remarks about the quality of a cigar don't belong here. --Nekotaku 09:55, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

As long as it is stated objectively and sources are cited. "SOURCE described the flavor of the cigar as being "DESCRIPTION". SOURCE described the construction as "DESCRIPTION." If the publications review the cigars and attribute numerical values to them, such as Cigar Aficionado does, it would not be out of place to say: "Cigar Aficionado rated the CIGAR 92 out of 100. Smoke Magazine rated CIGAR 85 out of 100. Cigar Inspector rated CIGAR 4 out of 5."--Scardinoz (talk) 19:05, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

"1886"?

Cigar Brands - United States

The De Nobili brand is missing from the list of cigar brands.

A description could say:

Although it is often thought of as an Italian brand because of the name and the Italian theme of the packaging, De Nobili cigars are produced in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. Originating in 1896, these dry-cured cigars are now machine-made with what the manufacturer calls a "mellow, medium-bodied" blend of 100% dark-fire-cured Kentucky and Tennessee tobaccos.

If I can figure out how to do it, I will try to include a picture representing the Toscani variety, which is a 6 1/2" long "Panatela, Maduro" cigar.

The Don Collins brand is missing from the list of cigar brands.

Don Collins cigars are manufactured in the oldest operating factory in Puerto Rico, and is a fully owned subsidiary of Puerto Rico Tobacco Corporation (formerly Porto Rico American Tobacco Corp). The brand was established in 1993, and is well known throughout Puerto Rico, with mentions in the New York Times Travel section, Frommers. Why is this listed by country?

The listing by country rather than alphabetically is pure confusion. Take the case of Oliva, which I just wrote up... The company is based in Miami (American), has its main factory in Nicaragua, its secondary factory in Honduras, uses mostly Nicaraguan tobacco but also imports from other places. Most companies are similarly multinational. A simple alphabetical list of MAKERS (not label names) would seem to be the way to play this, which the various sidebrands in parenthesis. For example, Oliva also makes NUb, Master Blend, Sol Cubano, and Flor de Oliva. Again, very many brands do the same thing. To say that the result rendered here is confusing is an understatement.

Spain is the country of first european smoker, one of the first consumers of cigars in the world. Some cigars brands of Spain:

Restructured list

I've converted the confusing country-by-country listing (where to put an American company making cigars in Nicaragua out of Honduran and Mexican components?) into a simple alphabetical list, taking the opportunity to switch to a tabular form at the same time. Inclusion criteria?

Could someone propose an inclusion criteria other than just notable brands (brands with their own article)? Otherwise, I don't see how we can make this a maintainable and neutral list of brands. --Ronz (talk) 03:35, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Since no one appears to be maintaining this article, then lets restrict it to notable brands, brands from notable companies, or entries with a source that is both reliable and independent. --Ronz (talk) 18:59, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Maker's Mark link leads to page on a whiskey by that name. Old Henry link leads to page on the movie by that name.
