RFC: Ray William Johnson

C'mon... RWJ is possibly the funniest interent personality ever. He not only has alot of subscribers but also tonnes of views. He gets around 5 million views per video now and he posts two a week. How can he not be the greatest you tube personality ever. Please for the love of common sense add him to the list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.45.83.172 (talk) 00:33, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Mr CC and SOWhy have some issue with RWJ -- sometimes I wonder if he is one of them since he is not a fan of the publicity. In any event, these two have clearly demonstrated a BIAS against RWJ (this is not an attack, it is a supportable theory) because they use different standard for him than others on this list. The bottom line is that they will lose eventually -- RWJ is notable. We have cited plenty of solid sources including major international press -- it is only a matter of time before they have to give him. And they know it. Many YouTube's have questionable or time-sensitive notability but RWJ is not a one-video-hit wonder; he is a phenomenon. So Mr CC and SoWhy will lose this childish battle in the end.206.176.237.7 (talk) 17:55, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
This is a misunderstanding. Once the subject passes the criteria, it can be included, and Mr CC and SoWhy win, because they support the criteria not oppose the content. It's the same as bands that have "enormous potential" - maybe one day, maybe soon, they will be notable/significant, but not now. Rich Farmbrough, 17:54, 22 March 2011 (UTC).
No. Sorry. I have watched this silliness for weeks; Mr CC and SoWhy were heavily biased against RWJ and ignored and rejected perfectly good sources. Perhaps, when they first objected, it was reasonable -- but soon after that it became obvious that even without the Fifth Pillar that RWJ was notable and should be included on this list (what, did they want him to be number ONE on YouTube before they accepted him?) and yet the continued their campaign against him. It was a losing battle and they lost.70.189.147.1 (talk) 19:57, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

I've tried looking up sources for these guys and have had no such luck. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 09:30, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Since I think these guys are amazing, my due diligence:

http://it.tmcnet.com/channels/projector-lamp/articles/163502-projector-lamp-bulbs-its-whats-dinner.htm

http://www.thedailyitemoflynn.com/articles/2011/03/21/news/news04.txt PokeHomsar (talk) 18:47, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

There are a few inaccuracies with these articles. First, Jory is not a light bulb enthusiast. Secondly, Riley is not a LCD aficionado. Thirdly, there was no pranks that were the basis of Jon's career. Fourthly, an airbag was not the first thing they microwaved which lead to this career. The early videos including the early "Is is a Good Idea to Microwave This" seasons were shot while Jon and Jory were in college. Those are my only problems with the articles. Those are the only two articles on them which makes it hard to source an actual article on all three of them. Even though ideoProductions is great, Wikipedia isn't edited based on how we feel. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 21:42, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
It doesn't matter if you know differently on the information expressed in reliable sources. Unless you can find reliable sources that prove your version of things, we have to show the one that is depicted in these sources. Verifiability, not truth, remember? Secondly, we've all already agreed in the discussion above that people on this list don't need to have articles themselves to be considered for inclusion. They just need to have reliable sources that talk about them in enough depth to show their notability for inclusion. These sources do that, thus they should be included. SilverserenC 06:29, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Firstly, where in what I said did I say they shouldn't be included? Secondly, I said those are the only two sources you'll find. They are an actual article unlike some you'll find on the list. Thirdly, shouldn't the source be correct so the information is correctly verified? Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 06:36, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
You seemed to imply that they shouldn't be included. If that isn't true, then I apologize. I've just added them myself anyways. For your third point, the main issue is that the information being incorrect is just your opinion and we can't verify that your opinion is correct. We have no reason not to believe that the information shown in these sources is correct, unless other reliable sources are found that contradict it. If we just went off of people's opinions, then we wouldn't have any articles on conspiracy theories, because someone would delete them, since it is their opinion that they aren't real or true. SilverserenC 06:43, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Jory and Riley have their own channels that they produce content on. Jon has his own second channel where he produces other content. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 12:53, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Mr. C. C., are you just a contrarian or do you just hate all popular YouTubers? Or do you just hate all the people I like? PokeHomsar (talk) 01:03, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

PokeHomsar, are you a troll or do you hate people with a difference of opinion? Seriously, get over yourself. You've been told to stop, now do it. For you information, just because they "popular" doesn't mean everyone has to like them. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 07:43, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Somebody honestly needs to update this list, because Rebecca Black is not even listed

76.199.151.40 (talk) 22:56, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template., as this may or may not be a controversial edit. It's unclear to me if Black constitutes a YouTube personality. Her rise to notoriety can certainly be attributed to her music video posted on YouTube, but is this enough? Perhaps a few other editors can help determine that. Kinaro(talk) (contribs) 01:27, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

An edit request I recently answered on this page brought up the debate of whether or not to include the artist, and I'd like to know if we have any consensus. Please remember that a high number of views and/or subscribers is not a valid reason for inclusion on this list. Cheers, Kinaro(talk) (contribs) 23:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Please consider this page from Korean-content.com as 3rd party reliable source -> http://korean-content.com/2011/02/17/sungha-jung-%E2%80%93-korean-guitar-prodigy/

Not done: Since the purpose of that site is to "lead the country's creative economy through the promotion of the contents industry", it is in no way a reliable source. That is, it's a press agency designed (and, presumably, paid) to write stories about people to promote them. That does not establish that Jung is a notable Youtube star. You need an article in a normal newspaper, a television news program, a music industry magazine, etc. Qwyrxian (talk) 02:24, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

In that case, please consider this article published in "The Korea Times", which is a well recognized English language newspaper published in Korea -> http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2011/02/123_82225.html

With that source (which I added to Jung's wikipage as well), I'll add the name here. However, note that Sungha Jung itself may be deleted, because it's not clear that he meets the notability guidelines for musicians or people in general. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:00, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Ugh, actually, I can't add it right now, because I can't access Youtube from work, so I don't know what his channel name is. If someone else could add, that would be helpful (else I'll try to take care of it later). Qwyrxian (talk) 05:02, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Note: Answered; edit=answered template switched to yes. Kinaro(talk) (contribs) 23:19, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Julian Smith and Freddie Wong

Most of Julian's videos have over 1,000,000 views. he is the 19th most subscribed to director on youtube. Freddie wong is in the top 15 for most subscribes users. im surprised that neither of them are there, but some obscure people are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.96.98.171 (talk) 17:25, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

As it says at the top of the page you saw when you made this post: "a high number of views alone [...] is not sufficient reason to add an artist to the list." If you think they should be added, please provide reliable sources that cover them significantly. Regards SoWhy 17:32, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Though I'm a regular reviewer here, I'll nonetheless post this for peer review before making a change.

I think Professor Elemental should be added to this list. His wildly-popular "chap-hop" video "Cup of Brown Joy" (over a million hits) helped garner him and fellow chap-hop artist Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer the attention of the mainstream media, including the Wall Street Journal and Wired Magazine.

Popular and notable are two different things. The articles are just about this rap and not about how he is notable. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 05:04, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
"They have created chap-hop, fusing the American urban musical genre with the imagined lifestyle of the British upper classes. ... Whatever the outcome of the feud, chap-hop is growing, part of a wider retro-futurist movement that re-creates modern life as imagined in the past." Creating an entirely new genre of music is notable, I would say.
He's also now a headliner at major steampunk events both in his native Britain and abroad (just last week he performed at the Steampunk World's Fair in Somerset, NJ). --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 05:23, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Notoriety

I believe many of these personalities aren't popular enough for inclusion. I've been an avid youtube user since the website opened and many others would agree in all that time, most of these people have had one notable video and then faded after their fifteen minutes of fame were over. Somebody should really clean this page up and remove some of the less notable people. Many have no impact on modern day media. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.77.90.64 (talk) 16:43, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

If you read the notability guidelines it clearly states that notability is not temporary.
"Notability is not temporary: once a topic has been the subject of "significant coverage" in accordance with the general notability guideline, it does not need to have ongoing coverage."
Therefore it doesn't matter if they are no longer in the public eye, as long as they had been at one time. -CitizenofPanem (talk) 03:05, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Where is Zack Ryder?

Zack Ryder, a professional wrestler currently signed to WWE, has opened his weekly YouTube show called "Z! Yogscast?

Simon Lane and Lewis Brindley. Channel BlueXephos currently has 900,000 subscribers, and is among the fastest growing channels on YouTube (200,000 every 30 days). The channel is currently ranked #2 in the UK and is predicted to pass the #1 channel by the end of the month.

The duo hasn't produced a viral video, but they are solidly famous YouTube personalities, not gimmicks/flukes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.7.156.33 (talk) 22:55, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

You need references show their notability. A high number of views/subscribers alone are not a reason to get them on the list. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 12:57, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Why the hell were Simon and Lewis removed?!? EGDE Magazine not a notable source nowadays? Forget the fact that it's one of the UK's most succesful gaming magazines. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.25.13.55 (talk) 00:18, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Over million subscribers, interview on Edge Magazine and noticed by Mojang. Notch says he loves them. Why are they removed from the list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.210.145.13 (talk) 08:27, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Bring back Yogscast!! They should have their own article, they appeared as VIP guests at Gamescom as they are so well known and loved for Christs sake!! Willknowsalmosteverything — Preceding unsigned comment added by Willknowsalmosteverything (talkcontribs) 17:13, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

The thing about the Edge article is that it's an interview, therefore not a third party source and can not be used a reliable source because the content creators themselves (Simon and Lewis) are involved in the article and what gets said in it about them. Reliable sources are supposed to be independent of the subject so I can see why that would have been taken down. All I can find on the topic that's really relevant is this article from PC Gamer: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/24/yogscast-try-out-minecrafts-quirkiest-mod-maps/ but it's very brief and I don't know if it really counts as a source or not. CitizenofPanem (talk) 04:16, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Oh, but they've had large, non-interview articles about them in EDGE and PC Gamer recently due to the short lived fallout with Notch (the minecraft guy) that happened shortly after Minecon 2011. Surely these as sources, along with their millions of subscribers as evidence of their popularity, constitutes for at least a mention in this article..I mean they were on the panel at minecon infront of 5000 people and as I mentioned earlier; were invited as the minecraft promoters at gamescom Willknowsalmosteverything (talk) 18:08, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Request regarding CardGamesFTW

I know Martin Billany is on the list, but shouldn't he have his own page? All the others do, and he has 75,453,236 views on his videos. That alone makes him deserve his own page.

Views don't make someone notable. If you want a page on him, than start a subpage on your userpage until you get it up to standard, than move to article space. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 19:23, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

First, I apologize I'm new to this, but you may disregard this request if it's not enough. Just thought I'd throw this up.

Judith de los Santos created a rendition of Jeremy Soule's "Dragonborm Comes" for the game Skyrim. She has received 1mil+ views plus coverage on these domains in a week:

This is not done as we need an article stating how is notable outside of YouTube. All they are doing is just embeding a video from YouTube. A new article is needed. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:01, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Alphabetizing List

Would it make sense and make it easier to rifle through the list if it was alphabetized? I've been thinking about this for eons and wanted to get a consensus to see if it is worth doing. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:09, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Ah, isn't it already? -- MSTR (Merry Christmas!) 04:12, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I guess I wasn't clear... Instead of one long list, break it up into sections so we don't have to rifle through a myriad of names listed to find the exact spot to add another entry. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:26, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
So you mean like each letter is it's own section? If so, Agreed. -- MSTR (Merry Christmas!) 04:28, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I also agree, if you have the time and energy to do it. We won't need a separate section for each letter but maybe for certain ranges (e.g. 0-9, A-F, G-L, M-R, S-Z). If you go with one section per letter, remember to replace the TOC with {{CompactTOC2}}. Regards SoWhy 23:27, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the support. Either way I do it, it seems better than one big long list. It will be less time consuming to rifle through. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:01, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

It is done. Anything I missed, which I did and was fixed, you can go ahead and do it. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 05:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Add Tobuscus(review below sources for entry to list)

STOP IGNORING MY REQUEST I HAVE PMD ALMOST EVERY ADMN. WITH NO ANSWER. If it is enough to add him to the list do so, if it is not say why.Do your dang job I have had this up for months with no reply. And read the whole thing it has multiple sources citing reasons other than subscribers for his entry on this list.

I need to know if the sources I provide are credible and warrant an add on to the list. I hope you guys don't mind but i'm starting a separate Toby Turner edit request because that one is so highly congested unless someone wants to clear it up. According to youtube is the number #27th most subscribed all time on his Tobuscus Channel. He has 1,377,545,Subscribers. Citation from youtube:http://www.youtube.com/channels?p=2&s=ms&gl=&t=a&g=0 He currently has more subscribers than RhettandLink,xBextahx, brownmarkfilms, etc. who are on this list. I know its not enough that he has 3 channels with each video getting from hundred of thousands to multiple millions of views apparently? He also got a gamestop commercial on live tv. Your telling me that being on tv and having more subscribers than a lot of these people makes him not notable? Please can somone here give me a better argument than I don't like him? He should be added asap. The source is YouTube which is highly reliable if that is not enough he has even more credentials on IMDb http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3333977/ He has really become popular among gamers and vlog watchers and is notable for the reasons mentioned above for more reasons than just viewership. His videos have even been hosted by major sites like ign http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/06/24/assassins-creed-revelations-literal-trailer NEWS STORY reliable source: business insider lists Toby due to his cute win fail series as the number 2 youtube rising star for 2011. http://www.businessinsider.com/rising-youtube-stars-2011-1#2-cute-win-fail-13 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nicks king (talkcontribs) 02:06, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

You have yet to provide multiple reliable sources indicating how the subject meets notability criteria. Until you do that, the entry will not be added, period. OhNoitsJamie Talk 21:08, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

This notion of controversy is what's keeping me from saying "I deed it" when it comes to adding him.

Tobuscus?

28th most subscribed all time:[3] (citation of popularity). He's more popular than half of these YouTubers. Bwastphemy! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.87.108.12 (talk) 04:01, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Popular is not the same thing as notable perhaps if you read the notability guidelines and find some reliable third party sources defending his notability he can be added to the list, but being popular alone is not grounds for inclusion. - CitizenofPanem (talk) 15:41, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Well he has over 1 million subscribers and was also the main interviwer of Ubisoft in the E3 2011. He made the "Literal Trailers" of games like Assassin's Creed or Dead Space and movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On stranger tides and Tron Legacy. Some of his videos are sponsored by companies like Mountain Dew and Wonderful Pistachios. I think these achievements make him worth of getting into this list and also of getting a wikipedia article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.207.153.12 (talk) 00:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
We've had this argument on here more than enough times. I think Toby should be an exception and be let on the list, because it's true, it's freaking hard to be on YouTube and not know about him. He's done advertising for a gazillion different products and companies, he's a partner with Ubisoft and does a freaking ton of interviews with him, he's just... everyone knows about him! --Arkatox (talk) 21:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
This article says nothing about notable Youtubers only. Just celebrities. And what makes Toby less notable than, say, Katers17? She's one of my favorites but she's nothing at all special. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.87.108.12 (talk) 03:03, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Toby Turner not notable? Have you been living under a rock? Toby Turner is every bit as notable as Craig, Kate and Cory, all of which I'm subscribed to. Sure, Cory did the Mean Kitty Song, but Toby does similar things except in the form of trailer parodies. He has four different regularly updated channels all with a combined subscriber count of over 1.7 million. Tobuscus with 1 million subs, TobyTurner and TobyGames both with over 300,000, and CuteWinFail which has 100,000. His videos appeared in places other than Youtube, he's partnered with Ubisoft, nearly everyone on Youtube knows who he is, and you say he's not notable? What kind of backwards, 2-bit mentality is "Popularity =/= notability?" The reason why these Youtube personalities are notable is BECAUSE they're popular. What, is it because he doesn't have a news article mentioning him? What a black and white, mechanical, shallow presumption. I'm genuinely offended. SkaarjGuy (talk) 06:41, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I would just like to say, I agree wholly and heartily with SkaarjGuy. I know people who aren't even regular visitors to YouTube who have heard of and seen Tobuscus' videos. Saying Tobuscus is not a YouTube Celebrity is like saying Johnny Depp isn't an Actor Celebrity. Seriously, he's that big on YouTube. --Arkatox (talk) 00:37, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Look, It really does not matter what you think of him personally, in order for him to be added to the list you have to provide at least one reliable source which gives significant evidence as to why he is notable. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it's editors have to remain unbiased on the topics they are writing about, so I can not add him to the list because you think he deserves it, that kind of frivolous editing is what makes people distrust Wikipedia. I'm not saying that he is not notable in fact I mostly agree that he is but that is not the point, you have no sources to back up his notability, there is no proof, and so we cannot post it. You are all free to look for sources to back up your opinion but as of now he cannot be added to the list. I hope that clears things up. CitizenofPanem (talk) 22:56, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Toby was just hired by Gamestop to do a TV Spot for Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Apparently he must be pretty notable if Gamestop, a massive game distributor company, took notice of him. I say add him now. SkaarjGuy (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.178.5.210 (talk) 13:59, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
Add him now please, he has thousands of videos with millions of views. He recently got onto a gamestop commercial. He has 3 channels offering a diversity of tons of videos. The fact that people here say he's not popular enough is bogus. TobyTurner channel:#6 - Most Subscribed (All Time) - Reporters.Tobuscus channel:#28 - Most Subscribed (All Time).Whats he got to do make a video of himself marching in a parade with the leaders of the world while breaking every record in guineas. Come on ad him you cant not add him because you dont like him CitizenofPanem.Otherwise i'll do it in horrible formatting because I dont know how to. http://www.youtube.com/channels?p=1&s=ms&gl=&t=a&g=3 #11 all time director, http://www.youtube.com/channels?p=2&s=ms&gl=&t=a&g=0 #28 subscribed all time, that citation enough for you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beagle bond (talkcontribs) 00:11, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

We need reliable sources (i.e. news sources) that discuss him to a reasonable extent, just like everyone else that is on this list. "Popularity" doesn't mean anything. This isn't a list of the most popular Youtubers, it is a list of Youtube "personalities", people that the media has noticed and commented on. Find some sort of reliable source that discusses Tobuscus and he will be added, as simple as that. SilverserenC 23:00, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
