A question
[edit]What does "wire-to-wire" mean? I can't find it. Armbrust Talk to me about my editsreview 17:18, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
- It means that the player the led the tournament from start to finish. Personally I think its trivial and should be removed, as it wasn't included when the articles were promoted to featured status, plus its hard to reference. NapHit (talk) 20:34, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
I believe the 2014 champion Martin Kaymer also won wire-to-wire (so if this list is kept, he should be added to it). Tesseran (talk) 17:31, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- See Men's major golf championships#Wire-to-wire major victories, which HAS been updated and also defines what it means. I suggest we remove the list here. Nigej (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Updated here with ref. I see no reason to delete the list here. Tewapack (talk) 17:56, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
John McDermott's age in 1911
[edit]I have changed John McDermott's age from 19 years 315 days to use a template. This now says "19 years, 317 days". The official site (ref 5) actually has "Youngest Champion 19/10/14 — John J. McDermott, 1911". John McDermott says "McDermott remains the youngest U.S. Open Champion of all time at 19 years, 10 months and 12 days". Now we have him born August 12, 1891 and the playoff on June 25, 1911. This would seem to give 19 years, 10 months 13 days. Now I believe Sunday June 25, 1911 may be incorrect and it was actually Monday June 26, so 19 years, 10 months 14 days would be correct (19 years, 318 days). Other folk seem to think he won it on Saturday June 24, hence the 19 years, 10 months 12 days. Personally I prefer the years+days rather than years+months+days but mainly I would just like it to be correct. Nigej (talk) 14:29, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
- Seems playoff was Monday 26th, so I've made the appropriate changes. Nigej (talk) 08:26, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
Gary Player, South Africa
[edit]The flag of South Africa in the 1960s would not have been the "rainbow" flag of today. I'll try to change it, but somebody needs to if I can't. Cheers. 94.117.133.65 (talk) 09:44, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
- Seem to have fixed it myself 94.117.133.65 (talk) 09:46, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Ben Hogan, Five Time Winner/ Controversy
[edit]In 1942, Ben Hogan won the "Hale America" Tournament -- it was supposed to the be the US Open, but the USGA changed it in the month leading up to it as it would appear to be at odds with the new war effort. It was then called the HALE AMERICA NATIONAL OPEN tournament and was co-sponsored by the USGA and the Chicago District Golf Association. Hogan, as the winner, was presented with the same medal as that awarded by the USGA. Note that there is much more detail and a better listing of primary sources in the Dodson book "Ben Hogan: An American Life .Dave Muggle (talk) 03:38, 25 December 2016 (UTC).NB. I'm new to this and this is my first contribution to the Talk page. Apologies for errors in protocol. [1] [2]
