Usage of Fan Art
[edit]Why is Fan Art being used to represent characters, seemingly random ones at that? One (Remilia) even appears to be poor recreation (https://preview.redd.it/7ulnwp5p8fg71.png?auto=webp&s=dba431e547dfa845368322a5e712aa1f6f5a8aba) of a face made in an NSFW dojin which I'm pretty sure constitutes vandalism and copyright infringement. The "Taisei Project" images are mostly placed beside random insignificant characters. The AI generated Sakuya fan art also shouldn't be here given past image deletions on this very page. Again, what is fan art even doing on a page about the official works?
It seems this has become a dumping grounds for people to make jokes or put in non-official pictures of their favorite characters. All of them besides Reimu and Marisa, the only non-fan-art pieces, should be deleted. I'm unsure of how to submit images for deletion though. At least one them requires Speedy Deletion (the trace). --Hisouhihisouten (talk) 06:02, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- I agree that the use of fanart is ridiculous (among many other issues with the page) and that it would be proper to remove them all. After some investigation I believe fanart started being used due to copyright issues with using official art. You can see a large debate about this on the AI Rumia deletion, where some are worried that Wikipedia can't host the image due to rights issues. Of course, since there are still Reimu and Marisa images, there does not seem to be much consistency on the matter.
- The fanart being used is credited as the own work of Wikipedians. Furthermore, the Taisei Project art pieces come from a free and open source fangame, which makes it convenient to use the art in regards to legality. If you look at the Reimu and Marisa files, you can see that there has been effort to justify it as fair use. Therefore, it makes sense for editors to take the easier route of fanart/free art if they want to add images.
- Someone more knowledgeable on image policy should comment, but I agree that the fanart should be removed regardless of Wikipedia policy to maintain the quality of the page. Paragonicus (talk) 13:05, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
- I thought the bigger issue would be consistency. Reimu and Marisa get their images from an actual game (even if said game is UFO), so why doesn't everyone else, or at least the more notable ones (like Reisen and Yukari)?
- Unless image quality is considered an issue, in which case everyone up to UFO who hasn't appeared on a spinoff gets the short end of the stick. For the Windows era, that probably only means Rumia, Daiyousei, Koakuma, and Eiki. cogsan (talk) 11:25, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Touhou 19
[edit]This page needs to be updated as of August 13th 2023, as a new Touhou Project game has come out, containing multiple new characters, as well as updated art for some of them. 13 Rats (talk) 18:00, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Separate character pages
[edit]With the amount of information for some of the characters on this page (Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, etc.), would it be worth it to compile all of it and give one of them their own page? They've been around for a long time, and I believe there is enough information from ZUN, and other valuable sources to warrant their own page.
While on this topic, the Japanese Wikipedia (along with the Spanish, Korean and Chinese Wikipedia) has their own page for Reimu, and I believe she has more than enough popularity in the English speaking world to warrant her own page. Toptier5stars (talk) 06:33, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Problem is a lot of the sources don't work as well on the english end of things, as there are far tighter standards here for reception.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 10:03, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe, but pages like IOSYS and Rensenware have their own pages, despite IOSYS having a majority of their sources in Japanese. Plus, IOSYS uses the Touhou Wiki as a source, so that wiki might be credible. If we're counting the 25+ years of information that ZUN and other sources have provided, such as ZUN's emails and the omake.txt file, then I believe there is more than enough that can warrant Reimu her own page. Toptier5stars (talk) 14:13, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- The thing is it's not just information alone you need for a fictional character to have an article. Are there third-party sources discussing the character to prove notability?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 15:16, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- No, not that I could find. I tried using both her English and Japanese name in the news section of Google to see if I could find anything, but it's all just merch and unrelated stuff.
- I also tried it with Cirno. Nothing either, but Google does classify her as a TV character. Toptier5stars (talk) 15:55, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- per wp:sps, iosys using the touhou wiki as a source is a violation of the spell card rules, so i got rid of it ( ‵▽′)ψ cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 16:13, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

As fun as that would be, there's just not good sourcing for that, as noted. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 22:22, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
on spelling things
[edit]this applies to touhou articles in general
the spelling of certain terms is wildly inconsistent, all but alternating between them at every instance, so for the sake of settling this specific part of the issue, and assuming the average person here is familiar with both the thcrap fan translations (which may or may not have accidentally become official) and wikipedia...
ou (youkai, hakugyokurou, nyuudou) or ō (yōkai, hakugyokurō, nyūdō)? thcrap uses the former, wikipedia generally uses the latter cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 18:19, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
