Years

[edit]

Would be nice to put years of service next to each name. --Eustress (talk) 07:21, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. And I'd say that years of service are essential, not just desirable. Plus I'd like to see them in a sortable table, like this:
Name Years Notes
John Parry 1847-1854 Organized choir, was Baptist preacher prior to conversion
Stephen Goddard 1854-1856 --
James Smithies 1856-1862 --
Charles John Thomas 1862-1865 First director to lead the choir in the current Salt Lake Tabernacle building in regular performances
Robert Sands 1865-1869 Led Choir in first performance in Salt Lake Tabernacle
George Careless 1869-1880 Composed a number of LDS hymns, many of which are still used today
Ebenezer Beesley 1880-1889 Composed 11 hymns, which are still included in the current LDS hymnal
Evan Stephens 1890-1916 Never married, but was sealed to two women. Composed a number of LDS hymns
Anthony C. Lund 1916-1935 Implemented European choral sound in choir, made choir's first electrical recordings on the Victor Label
J. Spencer Cornwall 1935-1957 Directed choir in its first performances abroad, authored one hymn
Richard P. Condie 1957-1974 Collaberated with the Philadelphia Orchestra, their recording of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (1958) winning a Grammy Award
Jay E. Welch 1974 Served only six months, resigning due to an undisclosed illness
Jerold Ottley 1974-1999 Led the choir in nearly 1300 broadcasts of Music and the Spoken Word. Also led the choir in more than 30 commercial recordings and more than 20 major tours in addition to regular concerts in Salt Lake
Craig Jessop 1999-2008 Directed a number of musical groups outside of the Choir, led Choir to win a Special Recognition Award from the International Radio and Television Society Foundation and a National Medal of Arts
Mack Wilberg 2008-present Prolific and published commercial composer
It sorts by their last names, not their first. If no one objects within a day or so, I'll shove it in the article. — Frecklefσσt | Talk 00:08, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sortable

[edit]

My esteemed colleague, Grsz11, removed the sortable characteristic from the director table, saying it didn't do much. I contend that it does do much. The list is long and hard to read through. I think being able to sort by last names or dates (in either direction) is a desirable feature and I'd like to leave it in. If it interferes with anything, I'd like to hear about it. Anyone else in favor of removing it? — Frecklefσσt | Talk 17:47, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting would be useful for many fields, and a long list. This is neither. The whole list can be seen in a single view, and there is only one sortable field (apart from the default - years). I really don't care either way though. Grsz11 18:00, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
