I wonder if Mikhail Tal should be listed here. I've always thought of him as Russian, even though he was born in Lativia, which was independent at the time of his birth. He did win the "Soviet Championship", so I think that suggests he should be included in this list.

I also noticed that Fricis Apšenieks who is in the list, was born in Latvia in 1894, so perhaps he too should be removed?

The question is should be list be strict or loose? I'm not sure what the answer is, although I'd prefer it to be looser.

This list is a load of nonsense, hopelessly cluttered with lots of players born outside of Russia. The edit history has some risible bunk about "Soviet Union", when a Soviet (or indeed Russian Imperial) passport would clearly have stated Oll's (e.g.) nationality as "Estonian" rather than "Russian". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.194.169 (talk) 09:54, 23 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
