Football titles

[edit]

The same list for three other conferences: List of Atlantic Coast Conference national championships; List of Big Ten Conference national championships and List of Southeastern Conference national championships all list their respective football titles. Each of those lists also have some variation of a disclaimer about the NCAA not recognizing Division I-A/FBS football champions.[1], [2], [3] That last one from the SEC also points out that some schools may not necessarily "claim" a championship in the sport. Yet all three list their football championships.

Not only does this list not include their football championships, football isn't mentioned at all, no disclaimer and no explanation about the the sport's absence. And glancing through the edit history, it looks like it has always been that way. Am I missing something, USC '72, '67...? --RacerX11 Talk to meStalk me 23:49, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have added this. --RacerX11 Talk to meStalk me 14:17, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

national champsionships

[edit]

Recents edits have expanded the content around football national championships.

Unfortunately, the edits omit various selectors and don't reflect italic formatting re retroactive awards, in both team and award strings. In short, the new content differs significantly from College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS#Yearly national championship selections from major selectors. Should we resolve, or revert? UW Dawgs (talk) 19:36, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's still somewhat in progress, but if it's best to strictly follow the College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS page, then I shall do that. I was trying to figure a better way to do it because when you pluck just the Pac champions out from that list and place them on this page, then it's out of context and you get what appears to be undisputed or consensus national champions, when in fact that may be far from the case. USC 1933 and Washington 1990 for example.
If you feel better reverting, I suggest removing the section (the list) entirely and leave just a shorted version of the disclaimer that once explained why there was no list. --71.81.67.211 (talk) 21:38, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I started to port the data from College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, but stopped after noting it's a fair amount of tedious work and pivoted to Talk for consensus. I think all of the data (selectors, italics, bolding) should be ported, as we are omitting much nuance in the current state. UW Dawgs (talk) 23:19, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. If we port all the data including bolding the teams then that would capture those nuances better that what I've done so far. For most cases it should work fine. The only problem I would have at that point is the 30's USC teams. For example, the 1932 USC team (an undefeated and legitimate claim to the national title) would be rendered in the list same way as the 1933 USC squad (a team that managed only third place in their conference), the only difference being the '33 team having far fewer selectors. --71.81.67.211 (talk) 00:06, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Titles won not as Pac-12 members

[edit]

With all of the conference realignment going on, I think the titles won not as a member of the Pac-12 (or predecessors) shouldn't be included. For example, it makes no sense to have Utah's gymnastics titles on here when they won them with the WAC and are no longer part of the Pac-12; those titles have nothing to do with this conference. Nobreadsticks (talk) 19:15, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just went ahead and did it, removed all titles that weren't on the official Pac-12 list that they claim (I also added back Idaho's titles): https://pac-12.com/sports/2024/6/16/history.aspx#ncaachamps
I'm thinking of removing the AIAW national championship section as none of the teams are members of the conference anymore and they weren't won as members of the Pac and aren't claimed by the Pac, but I don't want to just remove it without thought. I will do a bit more work on this page later. Nobreadsticks (talk) 06:07, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
